I was given the honor of playing for @opulentchillmusic at 5pm on burn night (Saturday) at this year's Burning Man. I contemplated leaving the event when driving a friend to Reno on the Thursday before but had spent more than a month collecting and cultivating some music and returned to BRC beyond excited to play... until the weather took a turn for the worst and forced me to miss my set while sheltering in place (you may have seen the news).

A friend and I spent more than eight hours exiting the city (the time it took to reach actual road/pavement) yesterday, and I'm beyond grateful to be home. I wanted to record a mix while my feelings about the past few days and our shared experiences (trauma bonding?) were still fresh. I hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much to Opulent Chill for the opportunity to play and to the amazing friends who took me in when it was clear that my tent situation was not going to work with the incoming weather. Part of my favourite 80's remix set played at Camp Soul Shakers, 3:30 and E on Sunday at Burning Man 2023. Where over 1200 people gathered over 12 hours despite the weather and the muddy conditions we blasted on!! Thanks to all that came.

The rain hit the playa right before I was supposed to play https://soundcloud.com/opulent-chill / https://soundcloud.com/opulent-temple Friday afternoon, so upon recovering from the most unprecedented yet incredible burn ever I have found the motivation and inspiration to record the kind of set I would have played, with Burning Man still fresh on my mind!

Friday in the Tea House at KISS was magic. The rain and mud forced us to slow down and just BE with each other as we weathered the storm. It created a full range of experiences in our little tea tent. The intimacy and connection it invited created one of my favorite experiences in 15 years of Burning Man... it was an honor to create a soundscape.

Wow, what a night!  It was the second Sunday, after the rainstorm.  We were muddy, but ready to go!  The Transylvania Castle came to life.

I had the opportunity to perform inside the speakeasy on one of the best Funktion One systems I've ever heard and go B2B with @Jigitofficial for part of the evening.

The vampires came out to dance that night and the party was rocking until the Sun came up.

@chiwowwahtown 2024 was absolutely next level in every aspect.  The energy of the dance floor and the love that was emanating back to me, was nothing I had ever experienced before.  It was rather overwhelming at times, to the point of being so overstimulated and overheating. 🔥💥😍

Thirty five years of professional DJing this summer! 

I have spent many past posts musing about the early days, so I will spare you words of nostalgia today. Instead, I want to hit you with the kind of set that I feel is an accumulation of my past experiences of what works on a dance floor, what I personally love, and which of those sounds I feel connect with what's happening today. 

Music has largely stopped giving us anything truly new in the past decade, but the absence of newness doesn't mean we shouldn't discover music that is new to US, and sometimes we should also remind ourselves of the great eras, genres and grooves we may have forgotten. So today, instead of giving you newness, I present to you my musical opinion on contemporary timelessness.

I would personally dance my ass off to this set. LMK if you would too.

James began DJing because there was a musical expression inside of him that he had to let out. He felt the music he loved so deeply, he wanted to help create that experience for others as well. James has delighted dance floors from the Playa to theaters, from clubs to cabanas, and from intimate gatherings to expansive venues.

James has set the vibe at Pink Mammoth, played the Boulder Theater (on Halloween night!), and been a regular for Daybreaker Colorado. In addition to these events, James has shared the stage with the likes of Justin Martin, Lee Foss, and The Polish Ambassador. James understands from multiple perspectives what it takes to put on epic events having provided and operated the sound equipment for Below Radar. When he plays out, he brings to bear this diverse experience.

James isn't tied to a specific genre of House music; he's tied to his commitment to playing music that he feels deeply. He brings soulful beats to dance floors wherever he goes; curating musical experiences that make bodies move.
