At Field Maneuvers 2023, Optimo (Espacio) played the final set in the Sputnik tent as part of the Watching Trees takeover. "We expected everyone to be on their final reserves of energy," they said. ~Reflections~

My favorite moments in the mix are when a sense of urgency to play around, to switch moods, to linger and lean into experiments,  all of it riles up and smooths out the beat connection again and again. Just like the oceans tide, it comes in swells of beautiful music and risky stitching of all the messages together. It's not perfect, but I am living in these songs for this moment. Washing them through my being and my perspective, that's the fun part and the part I feel the deepest, that somehow I'm bringing this music to life through appreciation and reverence. 

Giving you something new at the end. The culmination of all the inspiration - is new music - sonically pushing to channel more light to this world.

Masha Mar is a Serbian-born, Los Angeles-based DJ and music producer known for her eclectic style, blending cosmic disco, tribal rhythms, deep house, and left-field secret weapons. As a DJ, she effortlessly transitions between festival stages and intimate club settings, captivating crowds with her electric sets. She champions independent radio with residencies on both NTS Radio and dublab. As a producer, especially fond of using the Roland 808 and Juno 60, Masha has released acclaimed EPs and singles on SOS Records, Night Prism, and more. Her debut EP, Virgil's Dream, flowed blissfully between Italo, house and dub. Her latest EP, Cherry Cherry, unveils an evolving sound primed for the dance floor. Rooted in the grooves of cosmic disco, tribal rhythms, deep house, and left-field gems, Masha channels her eclectic influences into her productions and performances. Masha has been deeply involved in fostering community and pushing culture within the vibrant LA dance music scene. In 2014, she co-founded Dig Deeper LA with Alison Swing, an event series that became a pillar of the Los Angeles underground, hosting legendary artists like DJ Sprinkles, K-Hand, Daniele Baldelli, Lena Willikens and Axel Boman. More recently, she teamed up with Heidi Lawden to launch Take It Outside, a femme and queer-friendly series spotlighting world-renowned artists alongside rising local talent. Suffice to say, Masha stays fiercely engaged, locked and channeling the eclectic sounds that she loves.

Deep house with heaps of soul to guide spring into summer.

"House music to me is about emotion… it's about how it moves you," says Suze Phaff, better known as Suze Ijó. Emerging from a thriving Dutch scene, Ijó belongs to a generation of DJs reshaping dance culture from the ground up, restoring soul and musicality to the centre of house music. It's a conversation happening not just in her home town of Rotterdam, but globally, among kindred spirits like MUSCLECARS and Dee Diggs in New York, Errol and Alex Rita of Touching Bass in London, and OMOLOKO in Belo Horizonte.

You could call Ijó a deep house DJ, but it's much deeper than that. Her sets embody house music in its most musical sense, rich in nimble percussion, woodwinds, calypso drums, gospel vocals, and romantic string sections. They channel the jazz-inflected heartbeat of the East Coast, the breeze of Balearic shores, and the light-footed rhythms of the Caribbean.

As Ijó explains in her Q&A, her RA Podcast "hopefully feels like a loving embrace." Opening with Key Trunks Ensemble's "Calypso of House (Paradise Mix)," she sets a buoyant, life-affirming tone that carries through the next 90 minutes. As the mix unfolds, her affinity for timelessness is clear, with selections that hark back to the golden age of house, from Lonesome Echo Production's "Sweet Dream (Shrine Sweet Mix)" to the euphoric swell of Blaze's "Klubtrance."

Listening to RA.986, it's no surprise that The Loft—David Mancuso's legendary, much-missed New York party—serves as a key influence for Ijó. "He wasn't confined to just one genre but would just play 'good music' in the right context," she explains. "He allowed the music to breathe."

If ambient music is defined by its ability to breathe in and reflect its surroundings, then Ijó's RA Podcast is ambient in the truest, most human sense: a deep, enveloping soundscape that feels like sunrise, like community, like home—wherever you may choose to listen.

James Axon is the cofounder & resident of the queer underground party Planet Love, and a resident of Dublab with his radio show "Hearing Color" -- both platforms he dedicates to underground dance music. A lifelong pianist and classically trained musician, James Axon spent years in bands and orchestras ensembles before falling in love with the timeless sounds of house and techno while studying in Copenhagen and Berlin. With over a decade of collecting dance records since, Axon now draws upon his musicality and eclectic taste as a DJ that espouses an expansive vision of dance music, often mixing seamlessly between all shades of house, techno, italo, electro, disco, and breaks. Often drawn to the 'grey area' and hard-to-classify tracks, Axon's selections stem from a deep love and fascination with the infinite possibilities of synthesis and sound design. His sets are always colorful, eclectic, and intuitively reflective of the setting. Whether playing cosmic disco in an intimate loft or hypnotic techno in a dark foggy warehouse, he still finds a sound that is distinctly James Axon: melodic, driving, dreamy, and synth-heavy.
