Formed in 2016 in Bury, Lancashire, Stupid Cosmonaut draw inspiration from science fiction and the cosmos to create beautifully haunting visions of a not too distant dystopian future. A vast reach of influences can be found from caustic, electronic hallucinations as chilled as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Shultz to more organic post rock offerings in the vein of Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky.

Since formation, Stupid Cosmonaut have played sold out shows at The Deaf Institute, Manchester, The Met Bury and Sebright Arms London.  They were honoured to play a packed gig on The Beauty Witch stage at Sounds from The Other City in Salford. The have also shared the stage with bands such as Henge, Dystopian Future Movies, Minami Deutsch, Lost Under Heaven, Naxatras and Barberos. 

‘Algol’ their first vinyl release on Drone Rock Records sold out to high critical acclaim amongst online blogs and websites with reviews also from print publications The Wire Magazine, and Terrorizer who said ‘Algol is a rich evocative and crushing trip into the uncharted depths of the solar system’

In February 1999, three longtime friends from West Texas went to a pizza place in Austin, Texas, for a prearranged meeting with a young man from Illinois. The Illinoisan had just moved to Austin, and he had put up a flyer that caught the interest of the others. They ate pizza and discussed movies and arcana. They also decided to meet the next day with their various instruments (two guitars, bass, and drums). This happened, and over the coming months they picked a band name, then picked a better band name, then wrote and recorded an album. That album, called How Strange, Innocence, was largely out of tune, but the band members didn't really notice at the time. They optimistically printed 300 copies, and gave most of them away. It turned out they really liked playing together, so they kept doing so. A friend of theirs sent a recording of one of their live shows to a record label in Baltimore, and that label offered to put out albums for the band. The band agreed.

Ipecac Recordings is the brainchild of Greg Werckman (former label manager for the legendary punk label, Alternative Tentacles, employee for Mercury Records for a record 15 minutes, currently operating Pick-A-Winner Management) and Mike Patton (former frontman for Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, currently of Fantômas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom).

Werckman and Patton had been scheming for years (in between video games) about starting their very own label, waiting for just the right moment to unleash their master plan. Ipecac Recordings is not about to make music biz history and execute a revolution (although one is surely needed) or bore you by waxing poetic about their original musical philosophies. But if we have to adhere to a "mission statement," how about the notion of being an honest, artist friendly label run on a shoe string with no outrageous promotional or production costs. This label is a home to Mike Patton's eclectic musical collaborations as well as a place where bands we admire have the freedom to release music they might not be able to, or want to, release on other labels.
