October fourteenth, I walk too fast,
my hands keep hiding inside my coat.
The sky feels knitted, grey and slow,
the coffee cools, I’m learning not to fake.
You say “I don’t know,” I answer too soon,
I hold my breath, afraid to lie.
I don’t take you for a shelter:
I just want to see you — not to hold you.

I fold this day like a letter
that I don’t send, afraid it might end.

If I lose you, keep my winter:
the wet streets, the steps we guessed.
If I lose you, leave me the sea,
I’ll write your name on the gentle foam.
And if I stay, I promise you
I’ll look at you without weighing you down.

The city blinks through tiny windows,
you laugh too loud, I count in silence.
Your burgundy sweater catches the light,
I whisper “come back” — but only inside.
I hang my illusions in the cloakroom,
I clean the table and the waiting.
I can love without consuming,
I can give without taking more.
