The starting place for this work was a collaboration with the incredible Omnibus Ensemble, who combine Western instruments and style with the traditional music and instruments of Uzbekistan. Members of the ensemble guided me through an exploration of Shashmaqam, particularly the incredibly beautiful and precise ornaments indicative of the genre. The specificity to which these microtonal embellishments are executed inspired me to connect this music with the newer microtonal tradition of spectralism. By deriving the musical lines from Uzbek ornaments and the harmony from the overtone series, the pitch content ties together these two otherwise disparate musics while also establishing a historical relationship to the Uzbek instruments and to timbre more generally.
After a sonorous introduction to the sound-world, the main body of Moment(s): Various/Concerted presents short phrases constructed with contrasting sounds within the ensemble, often repeated two or more times to establish them as consolidated moments or ‘sound-objects.’ Throughout the piece, these musical ideas are developed with a focus on texture and timbre, always increasing in length and complexity.

ABOUT:

In this piece, two sopranos sing a fairy tale that was written by a computer.

The work explores the theme of artificial intelligence in a child-like way, the music enhancing the absurd logic of the story. The name of every character is associated with a harmony and a motif. When a singer says the name of one of the characters, she automatically triggers the new corresponding harmonic field in the ensemble. As a consequence, the music almost sounds like it has also been computer-generated.

Two Secret Wars (2003) is an audio dossier of two secret wars fought today using field recordings made from an anti-war rally in Seattle made on December 8, 2002 and a [long since de-classified] recording of an American air attack on a suspected “enemy” camp in Afghanistan. But does the time and place matter? These wars (secret government military action, and political activism) have been fought continually for decades now...

Interstices are very small spaces between adjacent objects, such as the space between cells of multicellular animals, or between atoms in a crystal, or between the components of an electrical cable. The piece is a melody that is split up between the players, a hocket, on an assortment of small instruments: crotales, and pieces of metal and wood. The energy of the music and the communication between the musicians live in the interstices.
