After getting her start in the music industry as a teenage J-pop artist, SHIMA discovered EDM during her college years in Miami, and was inspired to become an electronic producer. In this exclusive commentary, she breaks down key tracks from her debut album, ‘Welcome to SHIMAJIMA.’ On “1807,” she sampled an old Japanese folk song: “so soulful and unique,” she says. The track “MAITAKE,” which means “dancing mushroom,” revisits the moombahton trend of the early 2010s. SHIMA nearly abandoned the bass music track “KARMA,” fearing that it might affect her standing in the world of house music. “Ironically, it’s my biggest track by far,” she says. Listen now.
