 On ne peut mieux décrire ce qu’est le vieillissement, sinon dans cet écart qui nait et ne cesse de croître, entre réalité physique et image spéculaire de soi : L’une s’abîme avec le temps, exposée aux lois cruelles de la pesanteur et de l’oxydation, l’autre, ne vieillit pas, reste intacte et vierge de toute altération, ﬁgée à un moment où l’on se sentait bien. Plus le temps passe, plus l’écart qui se creuse devient monde. Il peut en devenir si douloureux que beaucoup cherchent à y échapper, usant et abusant de tous les artiﬁces. 
 Youth looks so good on you est une balade sonore explorant avec étrangeté le monde intérmédiaire qui se trouve entre réalité et fanstame de soi, un monde où le culte esthétique de la jeunesse se fait le souverain du peuple.

Naomie Klaus est une productrice de musique et chanteuse française, basée à Bruxelles. Se considérant comme une actrice ratée, elle construit sa musique sous forme d’histoires et de micro-séquences dans lesquelles elle s’amuse à interpréter différents personnages avec sa voix. Elle évoque un conte de fées pour adultes, où les princesses que l’on rencontre sont des nymphomanes hystériques, armées et mal habillées.

For Balmat’s fourth release, we turn our attention close to home: to the Mallorca-born, Barcelona-based artist @nueen, aka Nacho Pezzati.

Nueen has been developing his highly personal style of blissfully Balearic ambient over the past few years, with releases on labels like Quiet Time Tapes and Good Morning Tapes. On Diagrams of Thought, he explores new depths in his sound. His atmospheres remain bucolic, but there’s a disturbance at work, a hint of uncertainty swirling beneath seemingly placid pads.

While Diagrams of Thought retains the ambient (or at least ambient-adjacent) focus of all Balmat’s releases so far, the album also marks new frontiers for the label; the album’s first half is graceful and largely beatless, but the mood grows murkier with the foggy drones of “Dome” and the intimations of liquid drum ’n’ bass on “Maxima”; “Veta,” meanwhile, might just represent the most forceful rhythm to appear on a Balmat release yet. 

Despite the album’s considerable range of moods, tones, and textures, it’s all tied together by a singular preoccupation, says Nueen: 

	“Lately, I’ve become conscious of my fascination for the notion of the break, on a conceptual and musical level. What’s temporary and what’s permanent. Thinking and making out of what isn’t there, yet is. Some people would call it silence, but it could also be a skip of the needle, an ellipsis. Something very basic—or Basic Channelesque. A set of sounds and silences, structuring just a hint of rhythm. Sounds that become silences, and silences that become sounds. 

The other day, I was saying to someone that for me, the sound of electric current running through the power lines above the train tracks is the most ambient sound there is. That infinity in which you never quite grasp all the harmonics and reverberations. It’s a form of time detained or expanded. Recently, I’ve been rereading Morton Feldman—you can tell, right? Vertical time, the silence that sounds. A sort of sacredness. My mind is blown every time I walk into a church, for whatever that’s worth.”

"Florian T M Zeisig’s splendid debut 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘚𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 was constructed out of 426 tape loops from Enya’s 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒏 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒌𝒚 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅. Using up to eight pitch-able tape players, the artist cut these loops and reassembled them, crafting captivating sound dialogues whose unforeseen and precise beauty emerges from a sense of curiosity and awe in the layered relationship between fragments. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒅, 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒂 𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.

For the 5th anniversary of this work, Zeisig revisited the original archive of loops and created an absorbingly introspective second volume with loops that had not been previously used, following the same approach. 𝑨 𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒂𝒌𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒇𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅.

𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘚𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 was largely focused on technique and conceptual elaboration, but 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘚𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘐𝘐 is not so preoccupied with an overly intellectual quest. 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒕 𝒖𝒑𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔, 𝒘𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒖𝒑𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒉 𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅. 𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅.

Freeing itself from formal concerns as a guiding principle, the second volume unravels from a deeply emotional impulse towards artistic and personal honesty. While the first volume opened up spaces of unprecedented wonder, the second not only expands these spaces and stretches them out into landscapes: more importantly, it also dares to inhabit them. Thought as a continuation of the work "for scarpa's fountains” [forms of minutiae, 2020], the composition "waterlilies in fontiform" weaves field recordings made in, on, and around the Tomba Brion in San Vito d'Altivole. Designed by the Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa in the 70s, this burial ground materializes as a garden guided by a multitude of lines made of concrete, metal, marble, and glass. Yet as one wanders in this peculiar landscape, one soon realizes that concrete isn’t the tomb’s primary material, water is. As if submerged, the graves are encircled by basins interconnected by a network of fountains, rivulets, and pipes. Water striders, sporadic frogs, vibrant fish and tapestries of waterlilies glide over sunken pyramidal stepped edges, echoing ruins of bygone architectures. An aqueous rhizome at the heart of the garden which steers us through the whole sanctuary. The composition brings listeners into the various materialities of the space and the underwater hums of the fontiform network's machinery. Moreover, subtle algae photosynthesis, muffled voices of human visitors, and the garden's avian inhabitants infuse with life the architect's carefully organized matter. Ambiguous feelings arise as if perched in equilibrium on the crests of the tomb's multifarious structures. The piece ends with openings (both geographical and temporal) as the uncanny murmurs of the flowing waters are joined by the drones of another (temporary) Venetian fountain, Claire Tabouret's sculpture "Deux Baigneuses'', before fading into the vespertine soundscape of a small Portuguese village. A midwife toad calls in the darkness, bells resound in a valley, as Brion Tomb’s architectonic specter lingers in the flowing waters.

> Note: Tomba Brion is also the resting place of Scarpa himself, who shared that "the place for the dead is a garden".

"The material for the album was created in 2022, the first year of the full-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, and this greatly influenced the sound and style of the release. Field recordings and sound effects of drones, power generators, and armored vehicles are mixed with wide pads and slow guitar passages, sometimes dark and mystical, filled with noise inserts, and sometimes dreamy and hopeful. The record is completely imbued with a cocktail of moods of these times - uncertainty, a sense of stopped time, as well as nostalgia for a carefree past."
