The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

My first mix in the books for 2022! Whenever I make mixes I try to take my listeners through an hour-long journey of global music. I listened to a lot of DJ Muro (especially the mocha soul mixes) growing up and it 'clicked' with me on how he programmed his music - from start to finish his mixes would just take me to another planet just with headphones on.

Below are selections of music I have been listening to and picked up recently - the music spans 20-30 years of sound and from different parts of the globe. Hope you join me on the journey I have prepared for you!  My favorite track on here is Laroye & Lee Wilson – Beautiful (extended mix).

The music starts out in West Africa in Ghana,  then we travel to the Chicago underground with Chez Damier, after we stop by the UK with the mysterious yet prolific powerhouse group Sault. While in the UK, we also stop by Disco/Dance legend Dave Lee. I then bring you back to  NYC for some percussion and spiritual sounds. Finally wrapping it up with a new 2021 release from Felipe Gordon from Colombia.

Hosted by Cat Tran and Erick Nidal, Long Play will adopt a community-driven model that crowdsources ideas to cover and the voices we’d like to hear.

About this episode

Could you ever own a nightclub? Why are we seemingly drowning in vacant luxury condos but even well-attended clubs are going bankrupt? Should the government play a role in supporting nightlife? What has New York City done recently to support nightlife? Who decides whether a nightclub gets to open or not? How can nightlife workers earn a living, and how can we leverage our day jobs to support nightlife? Are nightclubs even meant to last forever?

We spoke with DJ Tara, a pillar of the New York nightlife community both as a legendary musical curator and expert in urban planning and development. Tara grew up in the Haitian community of Flatbush and went to school for Engineering and Urban Planning. She’s worked in developing supportive housing for seniors and the unhoused, knows the ins and outs of city planning from her time working for the Manhattan Borough President, and was a contributor to the Global Nightlife Recovery Plan for COVID-19.

RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2000). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come by.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. It's Theo through and through. Once again, he proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.
