Anyone who’s heard Transistorcake’s previous releases will know his love of a 303 and ‘Oki’ sees the pair up the tempo and twist a sinuous acid bass line over Aili’s chopped up vocals and mantra like chant of “Oki ku natara” (“when I grow up”) to create a propulsive club track. With the pair currently working together on a new live show it’s to be hoped it won’t be too long before we can all dance together again.

Leng Records has long had close ties with the underground music scene in San Francisco, with low-slung dub disco and psychedelic disco outfit 40 Thieves releasing their acclaimed album The Sky Is Yours on the imprint way back in 2014. Now Leng has turned to another stalwart of the Bay Area scene, Cole Odin, on a single that’s every bit as trippy and engrossing as you’d expect from one of San Francisco’s most frequently overlooked talents.

Cole made his Leng debut earlier in the year, contributing the electro-influenced track ‘Numbers Game’ to the label’s 10th anniversary compilation. On ‘Little Boxes’, he’s joined by good friend Eddie C, a much-loved disco and house producer from Canada best known for his releases on Endless Flight and Red Motorbike. The pair recorded the track while Eddie was staying with Cole in San Francisco last year.

In keeping with the low-slung, hallucinatory sound that has always been a big feature of the San Franciscan scene, ‘Little Boxes’ is a trippy, mind-altering affair in which waves of sitar sounds, cosmic synths, effects-laden guitars and kaleidoscopic electronics rise above a weighty punk-funk bassline and crunchy, snare-heavy beats. It has serious dancefloor chops but is also atmospheric and immersive: perfect 5am music for Bay Area beach parties and mushrooms-fuelled forest raves.

Fittingly, it’s 40 Thieves who provide the accompanying remix, a 10-minute epic created with the assistance of Adonis and Rodney from the psych rock band ‘Guavatron’ for additional synths and the guitars. Beginning with tabla-style percussion, swirling chords, psychedelic guitar licks and mystical sitar sounds, the remix builds in waves, with looser drums and even weightier bass propelling the track forwards at a metronomic and hypnotic pace. By the time the eyes-closed guitar solos drop two thirds of the way through, you’ll be tripping hard and reaching for the lasers. It’s a genuinely stunning remix of a genuinely intoxicating, mind-mangling track.

With a some heavy hitting releases already under their Brighton belts from Alex Aguayo, Alterleo, Perry Granville and Joe Morris, these Balearic beaus are about to make a deeper impression with this latest offering.

Attraktors have been making chuggy, Kraftwerk inspired electronica in the East Midlands for a while, John Thompson, James Flower and Anthony Hodgkinson released their self-titled album last year on Vivod.  These talented musicians have all spent time in notable bands, the Nottingham trio make glorious noises that reference Depeche Mode, Eno and the Human League.

On this EP Attraktors join forces with Crazy P co-founder under his Ron Basejam moniker. You never know quite what you’re going to get from a Basejam production, which always keeps things interesting on the dance-floor. Championed by Gilles Peterson, he’s had releases on Wolf music, Razor-N-Tape, Futureboogie, Classic and House of Disco, as well as a ton of high-profile remixes for Fouk, Lovebirds, Kelis and The White Lamp. This 10” piece of vinyl is the result of this spectacular pairing.

‘Heavy Water’ rushes in on a siren-like synthetic fanfare, while dramatic percussion promises some kind of imminent lift-off.  Ron Basejam delivers a dynamic, deep, bottom-heavy chug, tested by depth-charge sonar blips. A menacing LFO arpeggio propels the piece out onto the peak-time dancefloor. Its snarl softened slightly as Ron launches that fanfare once more. Moody, magnificent, body-moving, it drops down to a conga break, and then hits you with horns, before bringing that bolshy beat back.  ‘Maximum Minimum’ initially subdues with its cinematic synths, and kosmische squiggles. Counterpointing this gurgling gear with theremin sighs and epic keys, a riot of rumbling motorik funk with chunky bass, gets its punk edges buffed by pretty prog harmonies, as the track evolves into an opulent, vocoder-ed, expanse. The piano rolls, as that robotic voice readies you for ignition on this stomping cosmic disco rocket.

A new figure sashays their way into Bordello. In one hand, a bouquet of carnations, in the other a 12” record. Lauer. Philipp Lauer. Known for his incredible productions on labels like Running Back and Permanent Vacation, not to mention his collaborations, the German all around good guy delivers four gems. The title piece radiates warmth, clean drum patterns giving way to beaming synth bars with vocoder lyrics bopping to the bass. Light hi-hats and a wet snare are the fertile ground from which choral key shifts break to squelching acid in this addictively diverse work. The energy levels spike, like a cork spearing its way from a champagne bottle, for the unbridled enthusiasm of “Frizzante”. Piano stabs, pulsating percussion and an infectious groove. The Summer sun may have set, but Lauer is still at the “Playa” with his playful finale. An off-kilter melody ebbs and flows on a string of rhythms, dreamy tongue-in cheek synth play sailing this 12” off to the horizon.

NYC leftfield disco darlings Phenomenal Handclap Band made their first appearance on RNT by way of a collab with JKriv in 2022, and now they return for an offering all their own, the Burning Bridges EP. The title track juxtaposes riffy guitar driven funk with plaintive vocals that smack of 1970s Heart in the best way, and Prins Thomas turns the tempo knob up a few clicks and launches into an extended interstellar  excursion with his remix. On the B side the cinematic slow burner ‘It Was The Summer’ begins sparse and hazy and builds to driving peak of backbeat rhythm and an insistent vocal soliloquy. Each Other (Justin Strauss & Max Pask) then take the tune straight the rave with arpeggiated and acidic synths, recasting the haunting vocals as a modern New Wave anthem.
