Expectations is a song about the pressure we put on our partners to be perfect. It's a song that pokes fun at the silly beliefs we have that our partners are going to fix us. Of course they're not! This is a song about relationship anxiety, codependency and attachment.

Expectations

We keep ourselves calm by pretending we know the future. Like clairvoyants, palmists or seers, we claim that everything is within our vision; the future is something malleable, controllable, subservient to our manifestations. It's a beautifully human thing that brings me great joy. But I believe that deep down we know that we don't know; we feel the emptiness of uncertainty on a deeper level than we share. That's what Voyant is an acknowledgement of. 

Written as an adaptation of my good friend Marinus de Goederen, aka A Balladeer's song 'Fortune Teller', voyant is the first release of lots you'll be hearing from me this year. 

An exercise in being honest, open, and transparent, I'm releasing this in the knowledge that it isn't finished. But deadlines are ever-present, more songs are scheduled, and life moves on. Irrespective of its glaring imperfections, I hope the character of this recording brings you the feeling that I hoped to share with creating it. Something human, something reassuring, something warm.

As with all of the upcoming songs, this was funded by Arts Council England.

Voyant

Power (You Ain’t Got None)

I'm proud of this one. One of the first tracks I made for this project. 

I will be writing more for Camellia soon, when the time takes me. It needs to come from a place of unrest or a place of peace, and I possess neither of those right now. I am in a tumultuous time of ebb and flow, of business and reprieve. Unfortunately, as this is a side project, that doesn't bode well for the issue of sustainability. However, I don't want Camellia to die out. Camellia is a memory-project, a capturing of emotion in dedication to one who has gone but will not be forgotten. Maggie, these songs will always be for you - I hope that you can hear them, and I hope that you're proud of everything I've done, despite all the anxiousness.

Brontide

"Landslide is a little song I wrote early last year. It's about plucking up the courage to finally tell someone that you like them, and to have them shoot you down there and then. I feel like it happens to me way too often; always coming in too strong with the feelings right away. Maybe it works out in the end, just like in the song, but who knows."
