In “aux déBris” I am interested in the exploration of defined points of convergence related to aspects of a-synchronicity, dis-continuity, and de-construction of sonic actions. Behavior, plasticity, and mechanic rigidity are in the epicenter of my artistic research while forging the embedded rhythmicities and temporalities of the sonic canvas of the piece. What I find particularly intriguing is the illusory hybridity between the human and non-human in an attempt to explore recursive, musical situations that become mechanical and electrified. Therefore, the piece is exploring the resulting perceptual complexities and multiplicities related to distorted and exhausting phenomena of repetition and re/de-construction. “aux déBris” is a piece for flute, clarinet, piano, harp, violin, and cello and is written for and heartily dedicated to the Yann Robin and the members of the MULTILATéRALE ensemble.

Sudden realization

Early morning. I went to see if it would be possible to record moor frogs in a place where I know they are. I didn't see any frogs, but I did meet a capercaillie. I tied the microphones to a tree and left to record. The picture shows the same bird that appears in the recording.

Western capercaillie makes vocalizations in early spring forest

Late morning in Palupõhja village Alam-Pedja nature reserve, Estonia. Different little birds are chirping in the trees next to the village road when suddenly a black woodpecker comes and bangs his drum four and a half times. The recording was made in the late morning of April 17, 2023

Leafleoht (the title means 'leaf-light' in Anglo-Saxon) arose from a memory-image of wind in the leaves of a hedge near the sea, the intricate and supple motions of the leaves, and bright (morning) sunlight refracting through the plant and reflecting off the leaf surfaces. This image is the focus of the first part of the piece; the second part is more serene and still (perhaps airier, or more concerned with the light alone) and the last is an extremely soft trembling, as of grass. The musical materials are elemental: different lengths and types of bowstroke creating different rhythmic lines and textures; Just Intonation harmony founded on the open strings of the instruments; whistling and murmured speech alongside the playing. As with other recent pieces I am interested in our relationship to what we call the natural world, specifically our embeddedness or indwelling within it. Each part is a single image; as the critic Adrian Searle wrote about an exhibition of Bridget Riley (quoted in the spoken text of the third part), the music attempts 'just to be here, in this light'.

Leafleoht

The last days of February were colder and a solid ice of about three inches formed partially one mile out to sea. The Whooper Swans had arrived past week but what I think could be Bean Goose appeared for the first time. At 9 min a fox is crying. 

The sea water was rising due to an arriving low front. This and because the ice was new and solid, causes the crackling sounds. I was lucky to experience this, as it is absolutely not a common phenomenon, at least not here by the sea shore.  The picture with a big Venus and new moon was taken during the recording.
