Alicia Keys is one of the undisputed queens of contemporary R&B. Powerful vocals, earnest lyrics and a deep self-awareness are the main pillars that have held up her career. But what happens when you fuse ballads with basslines? For this vinyl-only co-release on Bristol imprints Eminent and Slippery Sounds, Knoxville’s Nikki Nair stands at the intersection between new and old and redefines exactly how to nail the bootleg edit.


‘If I Ain't Got You’ is a precise flurry of two-step garage and nostalgic vocals, Alicia’s lilting voice still recognisable despite the dancefloor environment. A glossy rhythm breathes life into the old classic so that it becomes a new entity, which somehow welds together the murky rave realm with the weightlessness of Summer. It’s rare for tracks to suit any given setting, but this one might just be a strong contender.

‘Show Me Love’ takes a more starry-eyed course, weaving dewy textures into a fresh whimsical appeal. There’s still a subtle nod to the past despite the more recent Alicia/Miguel sample, which comes in the form of the 2010’s grime era melodies and nostalgic soundscapes. The breakdown around the halfway mark is a particular treat; it hoists up the vocals in reverence before the first of two ice-cold, dubby drops.

They say that if you’re paying homage to one of the greats, you’ve got to do it right. But Nikki Nair goes above and beyond that into a captivating alternate reality where the rush the second time round is just as good. These bootlegs are instant classics in themselves.

A Benefit Compilation for Homelessness in Los Angeles County from Pleasure of Love

Pleasure of Love presents a compilation of dance music to raise awareness and benefit the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles County.  DJs, producers, and musicians from Los Angeles and around the world contributed tracks, hoping to shed light on the issue and provide a little relief over the winter holidays and beyond.

Artists included are Aimes (Wonder Stories), Wild & Free, Club Tularosa, JMMSTR, Ghosts of Venice, Turbotito, FSQ, Peter Croce (Rocksteady Disco), Ladymonix (Frizner Electric), Mojito Boys, Sacre Galaxie, DJ Duckcomb, Air Zaire, Dream Machines, Band of Misfits, Mix & Fairbanks, and Nala (London).

Homelessness in LA County surged over 75% in less than 6 years, as reported by the LA Times back in February, 2018.  Housing shortages, rising rents, and a slow response to help aid the homeless have created a complex and dangerous situation in LA’s notorious skid row and beyond.  In an effort to best utilize the funds we generate from this benefit, we’ll be donating specifically to Downtown Women’s Center in LA.  Per the shelter’s website-

“The Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) is the only organization in Los Angeles focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women.
We envision a Los Angeles with every woman housed and on a path to personal stability. Our mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, and advocacy.”

About Pleasure of Love-
Pleasure of Love is a weekly disco, house, and international funk flavored party in Hollywood, CA.  On its 2nd year, the party has had guests from around the world play alongside founder Dino Soccio, focusing on underground house and disco in the small basement club Dirty Laundry.  A small cult following led to the launch of a vinyl only imprint in 2018.  The label is currently working on its 4th release slated for January 2019.

The original 7” single saw its first and last press in 1983, and recently has been in high demand amongst many avid diggers and collectors. Only a very limited amount of copies still exist worldwide. Along with the original cut on the A-side, we’re also treated by digger/DJ “Poko poko” on the flip. With his graceful edited version, containing stylish arrangements and subtle layering of drums and synths, we’re hitting the dancefloors ready to be saved! I've been DJing since 1985 and play a range of styles Old Skool, Breaks, all things House, Balearic etc. I love making my own edits and remixes, especially old skool. I ran & still run numerous club nights. Played at some amazing clubs and outdoor parties throughout Europe & Asia and was heavily involved in the U.K rave/free party scene and hugely inspired by D.i.Y and their ethos of parties/music. I also used to run a label & dance record shop in the 90's. I recently won the Sasha classics FB group DJ  competition and supported Ian Ossia and DJ Vertigo in Leicester/Manchester.
