Who are your musical inspirations and mentors?  It is so important for musicians to have mentors and true inspirations, who have helped shape the music each of us creates and plays.   I've done 8 tributes so far for SoundCloud for some of my very favorites - Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia, Carlos Santana, McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul and even SoundCloud's own Tom Adams. Thought I'd throw a quick tune together riding the train out to New York's beautiful Hamptons, and pulled this off with my midi controller and a laptop.  Surprised the people walking by on the train, but what the hell!  Probably the first tune ever recorded on a train:).  Here's a simple I-IV groove in C that just works (they always do:)) Thanks to Joe Cocker for his seminal Feeling Alright.  One of my favorite grooves.  Same type of vibe here.  Seems like the right atmosphere to go into the holiday weekend.  All done on keyboards.  Thanks as always for listening and commenting.  

Smile - Tribute to Joe Cocker

It's Friday so why not throw up some funk!  There is no one deeper than Herbie Hancock, so I created this funky tune as a tribute to Herbie.  Such an important influence he was across so many genres.  Herbie is the consummate musician.  A fellow native of Chicago, Herbie soloed with the Chicago Symphony at around age 12, started producing his own albums on Blue Note before he was 20, joined the legendary Miles Davis quintet in '64, and brought electronic keyboards with the Rhodes to Miles with the famous Miles Smiles album, then pioneering electronic keyboards in the late 60s with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  Miles had an album Get on Up With It, which is where I took the name from - a common phrase back in the late 60s and 70s..that James Brown of course used with his funky Sex Machine hit.  In addition to his incredible influence with Miles, Herbie left him around '72 to form the Headhunters, which then created what still is the best selling "jazz" album of all time - with Chameleon and so many other classics.  Herbie has meant so much to me that we named our first Beagle Herbie Hancock.  And was Herbie amused when I met him at a party and told him that.  Anyway, here's Get on Up.  I've used a real nice backing track with Swiss guitarist Hanspeter Kruesi https://soundcloud.com/music-pictures to set the groove and then added a number of keyboard and Miles like muted trumpet lines to bring it to life.  Get on Up!

On Payday,  Justin just takes this one home for Tom, as only Justin can.  He's picking up the organ and drum groove and spinning it around silly.  Heavy blues rock sound from New Jersey!! K-Retrograde Motion

Our little band has been busy over the summer months working on songs for a fall release.  This is perhaps one of the more spiritually-centered songs we have written and published.  How responsible are we for the evil that has come upon the world, for the resultant suffering it has brought. Peter's beautiful words begin with an act of redemption for mankind, but end with judgement not by God's choice, but man's will. 
The words did not come easily as Peter confesses that his pen "hovered above the last line for several minutes" not wanting to write it, but with a prophet's conviction, knew it must be written. The question is begged by those who will to believe, does the beauty of God's creation also involve justice and judgement, what Luther called "God's alien work"?  
Peter's verse has never been more poignant or Seagull's production more finely crafted. His track note also offers further insight into our thinking on the song and is well worth reading.

This song began in Artur's jam room at his house, where he creates all of his amazing music on his Fender Jaguar, which is perfect for the surf sound, at which he's a master. He shared it with Josh, who shared it with the group.

Before Josh could lay down a bass part to it, though, JJ came up with his elegantly moody synth and laid it down. The rhythm section, Josh and Ken, then did their usual dance, dialing it in with some back and forth. Stephen was next in line, adding a subtle duet with Artur's chords. Tez then played the ethereal lead throughout most of it. Stephen, after it was pretty much laid down, came through with the ripping wah solo towards the end.

Once the music was all taken care of, Carl came up with some great lyrics for it, and sang them, as the newest member of the group. He also laid down an accompanying acoustic rhythm guitar part, too. After Carl did his thing, we turned it over to Stephen for a mix, which he did with his professional skill set.

This is the latest in a long line of surf rock tunes Artur has shared with Eclectic Collective. If you dig the sound, he has plenty more great ones on his page, which are worth checking out, too. We tried to do this with a little nod to The Police, the band, not the profession. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it. Thanks for listening.
