My Favorite Recordings (Many of)

Stephan Lipinski is simply a superb guitar player.  Crossing styles of jazz, fusion, blues, latin and rock, Stephan continues to excite and surprise musicians including elite guitar players, with his fabulous blues and jazz oriented approach to soloing and rhythm playing.   Always tasteful and rhythmical, Stephan is not afraid to take it outside with his mature playing, moving out of the traditional scales harmonically, working with very angular ideas and expert bending techniques.  And then when it comes down to beautiful phrasing of a simple line or melody, nails it every time.  Let's just say it all works for me and my musical sensibilities.  Stephan's helped shape so many of the creative sounds I've been searching for here.  Love the guy's playing.  His nickname here is Pinner, but I don't remember why.  Ask him with your next comment.

Groove Central

With Soundcloud, music is so often created across the oceans, with musicians from around the world who have never met or spoken directly other than through this platform joining together.  Our new jazz fusion composition Across The Oceans pays tribute to these connections across oceans which have fostered such high quality of music, the sharing of regional influences, and true friendships.   
Joining me again are players from Germany, England, Spain and the US, who contribute their individual sounds, elevate and shape the music.  Our horn section was provided by two versatile instrumentalists - Georg Boehme on Baritone saxophone and Andy McLean on Tenor and Soprano saxes and EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument).  Love the full sound they get together and also the interplay between the two musicians.  Our featured guitarist is Stephan Lipinski, who weaves his fine solo to connect the oceans between Europe and North America.  Spanish percussionist Sergio Parraga provides the underlying churning rhythm complement to further bridge our two continents.

Two months ago our dear and wonderfully talented friend and musician Santi Caballero Mendez was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in his hometown of Barcelona.  Sam and I had recorded over 50 tunes together yet we had never spoken.  To honor Santi, we have created our tribute Missing You - with 17 different musicians around the world who had recorded with Sam in my music.  The music brings out so many emotions for me, sadness, joy, passion, playfulness, and of course the incredible latin spirit.   Each section of the piece has different musicians, and so many musicians appear and reappear throughout the piece - but often with different supporting casts.  In the end, a moving tribute from so many of Soundcloud's very finest.  Thank you all for joining in as we honor Santi - and thank you Santi...we're Missing You:

Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. You Got That Right - Jamie Rhind

Thought I'd share a quick take of one of my all time favorite jazz standards - Duke Ellington's  A Train.  Such a classic and thought it was written for piano and big band, I've decided to go with the Hammond B3 sound.  Organ greats like Jimmy Smith and Groove Holmes have inspired the sound.  May have Duke shaking in his grave, but hopefully he likes the interpretation.  Thanks as always for your listens and for your wonderful comments.

Dan van den Berg steals the show here on a Miles type modal groove, while breaking a high E string in the process.  See if you can find where:)  A special tune for us to toast Miles like this.  From the late 60s on Miles always had one or two super serious fusion guitar players on stage with him - John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty, John Scofield, Robin Ford and Foley. Taking It Up - Dan van den Berg / Jamie Rhind

Here's a latin jazz hard bop classic made famous in 1965 by pianist Horace Silver.  Horace's music was heavily influenced by the blues, and this tune was further influenced by a trip he took to Brasil.    I recorded this all on keyboards, and would like to dedicate this to my father, to whom I owe so much, and who passed away last year.  I took this photo from the top of the John Hancock building in Chicago, the city where he made his home and career.

Song For My Father - Horace Silver

What a thrill to be able to record Jobim's all time classic How Insensitive with world class Brazilian musician Nanny Assis and Vocalatti   https://soundcloud.com/vocalatti .  Nanny is a fixture on the New York City jazz and latin music scene, performing regularly at clubs such as the Blue Note and SOBs (Sound of Brazil), where he leads the Sunday brunch jam sessions.  A consummate world class musician, Nanny is multi dimensional, as a percussionist, vocalist, composer and guitarist.  The opening verse is sung by Nanny in his native Portuguese, and Vocalatti is featured on the second verse in her native English.  All percussion is Nanny and Vocalatti has added some beautiful harmonies to her vocals.  

I first studied this beautiful bossa nova standard in the '80s with the late jazz guitarist Emily Remler.  This piece is dedicated to her for all she has meant to me.

Check out Stephan Lipinski (Pinner) on this soon to be released fusion tribute to Miles Davis.  Pinner is an outstanding fusion electric guitarist who grew up in the suburbs of New York, moved outside of Philadelphia now, and who has his instrument down and then some.  An exceptional player who brings a similar angular and harmonic approach to improvisation that John Scofield did with Miles back in the '80s. Spring Break - Daniele Petrocchi / Jamie Rhind

If you're into the blues here on SoundCloud you've got to be following San Antonio's Tom Adams https://soundcloud.com/ytlblues .  Tom is a master blues player and just loves to interpret so many styles.  Truth be told, Tom posted this bad ass Johnny Winter style BB King tune up for a couple of minutes and took it down because he thought it was a bit wild and aggressive - my adjectives here but that's the idea.  But I quickly encouraged him to put it back up and he suggested my adding a little organ solo to it - which I jumped on immediately.  So here's a little heavy blues - the kind of electric blues that I just love - that reminds me of what I hear in the Chicago blues clubs when the band really wants to get that raw blues sound.  It only works with a great guitar player and we sure have one with Tom.  Thanks for throwing it back up and allowing me a minute of fun with you once again.  Let Tom know we want to hear more of this type of playing:)))  He needs encouragement to let his hair down.

Ace of Diamonds

Here's a classic jazz standard A Foggy Day.  A Foggy Day was composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress. Never saw the movie but the beautiful tune has stuck with me for a long time.  It was originally titled "A Foggy Day (In London Town)" in reference to the pollution-induced pea soup fogs that were common in London during that period, and is often still referred to by the full title.  So many greats have recorded this, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, George Benson and even David Bowie.

This recording was all done on keyboards.

A Foggy Day  - George Gershwin

Have always wanted to record the classic Miles/Marcus Miller '80s groove Jean Pierre, and we've now done it.  Joining on this wonderfully simple funk fusion tune is the outstanding Santi-Caballero Mendez (Barcelona) on tenor sax, relative newcomer and marvelously funky guitarist SC Les Thomas (San Francisco)and my younger brother David Rhind on trumpet (Chicago), the ultimate Miles fan and follower.  Such a treat to have all three of these serious musicians and friends with us as we celebrate Miles' modal funk period.  Think you will really enjoy what each of these players brings here.  Jean Pierre was a staple of Miles' early '80s band, that featured Marcus Miller on Bass, Mike Stern on guitar and Al Foster on Drums.  I was fortunate to have caught Miles about 10 times in the '80s and our fusion band then also performed this.

Fresh Air - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski / guitar

1971 was an important time in music, where electricity was changing the landscape and Rock, Funk, Soul and Jazz were all merging into psychedelic grooves.  Marshal stacks were often taller than the players, the players were higher than the Marshal stacks, Strats and Les Pauls were the axes of choice, Hammond B3 Organs and Fender Rhodes keyboards could compete for volume with the guitars, and the hair was even longer than the jams.   Woodstock was a recent memory, Jimi Hendrix had just passed but had moved into the funk and soul inspired Band of Gypsies period, Sly & The Family Stone was heating it up with heavy funk and soul inspired grooves, and Miles Davis had just released the seminal Bitches Brew fusion double album that literally changed music.  This was where it was at, with each of these musicians and bands being influenced by each other.  Great stuff that produced legendary sessions and recordings and pushed music forward with power, energy, groove and volume.  

1971 commemorates this time and mindset, and recreates the feel with friends from around the world who continuously exhibit this spirit, energy and hair in their playing:

A couple of words on each of the players:  ALPHA ROOTS - Alphio was the perfect choice to add his soulful African djembe percussion voice.  One of the most prolific and inclusive musicians here on SoundCloud, always speaking with a positive voice.  Check out his often reggae and dub inspired recordings.  RICKARD FROM - my favorite B3 player here on SoundCloud.  We haven't recorded before but wanted his beautiful sound and also wanted these other heavy cats to be introduced to his Jimmy Smith type playing.  STEPHEN "PINNER" LIPINSKI - one of the hottest jazz fusion guitarists on SoundCloud, bringing more modern Scofieldesque jazz lines and harmonies to 1971.  SCOTT NELSON - another burning jazz and fusion guitarist, Scott sound combines elements of the contemporary guitar masters - Scofield, Metheny and Martino - to create his extraordinary playing.  MARCO OVERSTEEGEN - no one on SC has a closer overall sound to Hendrix, and we needed Marco's fabulous rhythm playing and soloing to anchor this 1971 mood.  JUSTIN VALENTE - Justin's my favorite blues rock guitarist, and just had to be a part of this summit, bringing us that heavy electric sound of Jimi, The Allman Bros, Freddie King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Our original funky fusion tune has a real positive vibe, like when one is playing slots and the bells and whistles and lights start going off....Jackpot! Back with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on a real tasty, soul jazz original called Pinner the Tale.  I'm not sure where Stephan got the nickname Pinner, but have decided to name this grooving number after the children's game Pin the Tail (on the donkey).  No doubt Pinner can play this blindfolded, but we know he is always using his ears.  Love his beautiful taste and chops on this one - as we always do. Time for some Hammond B3 grooving to Jimmy Smith's famous Back at the Chicken Shack.  Jimmy released this Soul Jazz classic in 1963 on Blue Note, and it has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it.  I am playing the organ to a fine backing track by Jamey Abersold.

A Positive Feeling

So excited to be releasing our latest original The Journey, with Dan van den Berg on guitar.  This one is extra special to me, not only because it again includes Dan's magical acoustic guitar playing on it, but also because a few weeks ago, while working on his parts for this tune, Dan decided to recreate the entire tune in a flamenco style using three guitar parts, and dedicated the music to me.  It was a huge surprise to me, and one that demonstrates the deep understanding Dan has for music,  his fondness for the passion of music and also for the friendship that we both share.  For our version here, Dan is once again performing on his gorgeous Joan Cashimira acoustic guitar. The funkiest guitar player on SoundCloud is BACK, with this grooving original, Can't Get Enough Of You.  Scotland's finest has teamed up with Germany's super funky slap bass marvel Mirko "Stringburner" Borach, creating what I can only say reminds me of one of the all time greatest tunes, Mountain's Mississippi Queen.  But Mountain never had a rhythm section playing with this much funk!  Ian's letting me do my thing on keyboards, and you can hear me soloing in the right channel, trying to hold my own over this nasty rocking blues.

Some heavy fusion for some heavy times...
Audric is the consummate musician, a musician's musician, and the top guitar expert in Philadelphia.  So I was again thrilled when he joins me here on our original, It's Not What It Seems.  With a handoff of the framework, Audric went to work - completely inspired - and turned it into this.   Not only the guitar, but additional keys, percussion, structure and ideas.   There's a lot to listen to here - from the spectacular initial guitar work to the harmonic structure and lines.

Beatbox Grooving - Stephan Lipinski / Jamie Rhind

Jazz/Fusion keyboard player, composer and producer.  Marketing, advertising, publishing and sales career.  Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.  Key musical influences include Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, John McLaughlin and the Mahivishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech, Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Emily Remler, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Larry Young, Buddy Guy, Santana and Earth Wind & Fire.
