Stephan Lipinski is simply a superb guitar player.  Crossing styles of jazz, fusion, blues, latin and rock, Stephan continues to excite and surprise musicians including elite guitar players, with his fabulous blues and jazz oriented approach to soloing and rhythm playing.   Always tasteful and rhythmical, Stephan is not afraid to take it outside with his mature playing, moving out of the traditional scales harmonically, working with very angular ideas and expert bending techniques.  And then when it comes down to beautiful phrasing of a simple line or melody, nails it every time.  Let's just say it all works for me and my musical sensibilities.  Stephan's helped shape so many of the creative sounds I've been searching for here.  Love the guy's playing.  His nickname here is Pinner, but I don't remember why.  Ask him with your next comment.

Smokin' with Stephan - Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski

Together.    A remarkable gathering of more than twenty of my favorite SoundCloud musicians.  Guitars, keyboards, basses, tenor sax, clarinet and vocals. Together's musicians are serious creative instrumentalists and are inspirations to so many.  Many are recording artists.  The finest players I know here.   So many are simply remarkable.
   
Together represents what SoundCloud is about, and how effectively musicians can work across the world.   Musicians who have never ever even spoken with each other, but recognize each other by their sounds and the notes, rhythms and phrases they play.  Pretty damn cool.

12 countries are represented here  -- Canada, Dubai, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and the US.   

There are two sections to the piece - a blues piece and a modal fusion section, with soloists across each part, showcasing their distinctive voices.  Vocalatti's beautiful singing is woven throughout the piece - her words and voice really pull us together.  The wonderful keyboard head during the opening and closing was composed and performed by Calaminus, who also has added the great organ comping you hear throughout.   The first and last soloists are brilliant musicians and soloists, as are so many throughout.    

It's been such a pleasure to pull this together over the past 3 weeks.  So sit back and enjoy a true SoundCloud experience.

Here's another collaboration just packed with funk and great players from around the world.  Represented on this tune are musicians from Germany, Spain, Scotland, France and the US (3).  Pretty sure you will enjoy this one.  It's an original funk fusion tune that lets everyone here stretch it out a bit.  Germany's Mirko Borach (Stringburner) holds down the deep groove on bass, with Barcelona's multi horn player Santi-Caballero Mendez creating the head.  Solos from Mike "Land of Orz" Orzek with a fuzzed out wah guitar, Santi-Caballero smoothing it down on sax, Scotland's finest Ian Tait bringing it back up again with his signature electric funk guitar playing, France's wonderful keyboardist Julien Apelian on a great synth patch, and then New Jersey's fine jazz guitarist Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski bringing it home with his serious Scofield funk guitar style. Miles Styles - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski - guitar

Here's one For Miles.  For so many Miles Davis has been the ultimate influence on music.  From the 1940s through his death in 1991, Miles changed music no fewer than 5 times, moving it into new and unchartered territories, and bringing along with him some of the most influential players of each generation and ultimately, the 20th Century.  

For this tribute to Miles I have rounded up the very finest fusion players I know on SoundCloud to participate.  These are highly creative musicians, who understand what Miles has meant, the merging of electricity and jazz, and who are all superb improvisers.  

The trumpet is played by Vivek Patel, who brings with him the lonely Harmon muted sound for which Miles was so well known.  Vivek opens and closes the piece with elegance and with a harmonic and rhythmic edge that Miles was known so well for.  What a treat to have him join us.

Mirko Borach (Stringburner) anchors the essential modal bass line here, helping set and keep that funk groove.  During the 80s, the period from which this draws, Miles was playing with the great Marcus Miller and Darryl Munch Jones.  Think you'll love what German's Mirko brings as always.

The ordering of solos is as follows:

LA's Derek Cornet is a consumate musician, recording so many styles and composing significant pieces as well.  After hearing a fusion tune he recorded that reminded me of Mike Stern's playing (Mike was Miles' guitarist from '81 to '83), I wanted to have his playing on this tribute.  What a great start to the tune!

Australia's CHeeZ tackles the second solo and brings the fire and explosive playing he is know for on SoundCloud.  Anthony hasn't done things with other musicians here on SC and I wanted to give him the change to fly with these other heavyweights.  Wow.

New Jersey's Pinner - Stephen Lipinski - sits in for Miles' other famous early '80s guitarist John Scofield.  And does Pinner bust this out or what?  Bringing the same approach to rhythm and angular soloing that Sco pioneers, this solo is a masterpiece.  

Dan van den Berg follows Pinner with exceptional playing and virtuosity.  Listen how he weaves in and out with the moving chromaticism of my backing horn comping, nailing the movement perfectly.  Wouldn't have don't this tune without Dan, one of the true virtuosos on SC.  

New York based Alto sax pro Matt Criscuolo brings his Kenny Garret sound to For Miles, taking it in and out the way that Miles and Kenny did on stage together for so many years.   

Dutch fusion guitarist Rients Draaisma follows, with what is simply a remarkable display of sound and virtuosity.  This powerful solo showcases why Rients for me is at the very pinnacle of progressive fusion anywhere, pushing the very limits of concept and execution.

Spain's fine multi-instramentalist Santi-Caballero is our second horn, showcasing his tenor playing here.  Santi-Caballero takes it out all over the place here, moving in and out of the mode as Miles and his great '80s tenor player Bob Berg did together.

French keyboard player Julien Apelien is the perfect choice to join the team, and brings a great electric keyboard solo and sound in the style of Miles' Adam Holtzman, using fourths to create tension and ambiguity.

Mirko's fine solo technique is featured after Julien, and he just kills it on this one with his slap bass technique.

Italy's Daniele Turani has the concluding guitar solo and in his playing you will again hear a  superb sense of structure and organization, along with his virtuoso playing.  Such a treat to have him joining this Miles tribute.

For Miles concludes with Vitek's beautiful searching trumpet solo, which showcases his deep understanding and appreciation for Miles, as well as a modern jazz conception that also includes weaving patterns in and out chromatically similar to the great trumpeter Woody Shaw.  What a finish to this special tribute For Miles.

Fresh Air - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski / guitar

1971 was an important time in music, where electricity was changing the landscape and Rock, Funk, Soul and Jazz were all merging into psychedelic grooves.  Marshal stacks were often taller than the players, the players were higher than the Marshal stacks, Strats and Les Pauls were the axes of choice, Hammond B3 Organs and Fender Rhodes keyboards could compete for volume with the guitars, and the hair was even longer than the jams.   Woodstock was a recent memory, Jimi Hendrix had just passed but had moved into the funk and soul inspired Band of Gypsies period, Sly & The Family Stone was heating it up with heavy funk and soul inspired grooves, and Miles Davis had just released the seminal Bitches Brew fusion double album that literally changed music.  This was where it was at, with each of these musicians and bands being influenced by each other.  Great stuff that produced legendary sessions and recordings and pushed music forward with power, energy, groove and volume.  

1971 commemorates this time and mindset, and recreates the feel with friends from around the world who continuously exhibit this spirit, energy and hair in their playing:

A couple of words on each of the players:  ALPHA ROOTS - Alphio was the perfect choice to add his soulful African djembe percussion voice.  One of the most prolific and inclusive musicians here on SoundCloud, always speaking with a positive voice.  Check out his often reggae and dub inspired recordings.  RICKARD FROM - my favorite B3 player here on SoundCloud.  We haven't recorded before but wanted his beautiful sound and also wanted these other heavy cats to be introduced to his Jimmy Smith type playing.  STEPHEN "PINNER" LIPINSKI - one of the hottest jazz fusion guitarists on SoundCloud, bringing more modern Scofieldesque jazz lines and harmonies to 1971.  SCOTT NELSON - another burning jazz and fusion guitarist, Scott sound combines elements of the contemporary guitar masters - Scofield, Metheny and Martino - to create his extraordinary playing.  MARCO OVERSTEEGEN - no one on SC has a closer overall sound to Hendrix, and we needed Marco's fabulous rhythm playing and soloing to anchor this 1971 mood.  JUSTIN VALENTE - Justin's my favorite blues rock guitarist, and just had to be a part of this summit, bringing us that heavy electric sound of Jimi, The Allman Bros, Freddie King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Jackpot - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski / guitar

Here's our take on the seminal Maiden Voyage, written and first recorded by Herbie Hancock in the early '60s, and recorded and performed again by so many jazz musicians since.  One of the all time classics in the repertoire.  Joining us on this tune are two of my very favorite jazz guitarists on SoundCloud, Stephan Lipinski and Scott Nelson, and the very fine bass player from the Netherlands, Kenneth Bruce.  Pinner takes the first solo, Scott the second and the tasty rhythm playing, and Kenneth anchors the grooving bass.  What a treat to be able to showcase Herbie's work so beautifully.

Maiden Voyage - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski & Scott Nelson / guitars and Kenneth Bruce / bass

Time Travel is a wonderful example of musicians from all over the world creating a significant piece of music.  Steve https://soundcloud.com/steve-hart-145230782 is from Glascow, Scotland, Stephan https://soundcloud.com/pinner from the New York City area, and Daniele https://soundcloud.com/daniele-petrocchi from Tuscany, Italy.  Each has added their own voice to what was a relatively minimalistic fusion tune to create this piece.   Exceptional players each is, and together we've created something really cool here, allowing each player to showcase their individual sound.  

The tune opens up, with Danielle's gorgeous bass laying down an intricate groove that continues throughout the entire tune.  Steve's guitar follows to create the opening theme, with rhythm playing from Pinner complementing the piano lines with open fourths and seconds.  Our first soloist is Daniele, with a damn funky and tasty bass interlude.  Pinner brings his expertise in modal solo construction as the first soloist, moving in up and down and in and out over the mode, similar to John Scofield.  Daniele comes back to burn over the funk groove again, using improbable articulation, reminding us of the great bass legend Stanley Clark.  And the we finish with Steve's Mahavishnu inspired guitar solo, further propelling us into Time Travel.  Steve is a master of unique time signatures and progressive rock playing and compositions. I'm not sure where Stephan got the nickname Pinner, but have decided to name this grooving number after the children's game Pin the Tail (on the donkey).  No doubt Pinner can play this blindfolded, but we know he is always using his ears.  Love his beautiful taste and chops on this one - as we always do. Celebrating the live of Jaco Pastorius with some fine musicians and SoundCloud friends.
Jaco Pastorius was one of the best bassplayers who ever walked on earth and always a big influence for me and my playing. 
In the early seventies he lifted the definition of bassguitar into complete new dimensions.
Died far too young in 1987 it was time to celebrate him and his life with one of his greatest compositions called Teen Town.
It first appears on the 1977 Weather Report album "Heavy Weather" and has become an alltime Jazzrock classic.

Ba Ba De Bop is what SoundCloud is all about.  A pure collaboration among serious musicians.  Joining me for the first time with a real clear trumpet voice is Andrew "Styrmonix" Styrmo, doing his Miles thing here.   Andrew's also adding some hip vocals, in fact creating the name of the tune, Ba Ba De Bop.  You will hear that in the tune in fun places.  His trumpet -- beautiful tone, cool chromatic playing, and drawing tension with every other note.  Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski holds down one of two serious guitar lines, driving the tune with an infectious wah rhythm track, and also some downright nasty nasty soloing, finding that perfect space between the bass, trumpet and his wah.  And once again, we've got Scott Nelson taking a big guitar solo in the middle section, providing a huge sound and such masterful playing.   This one combines so much of what I love in fusion and also in SoundCloud.  The opportunity to express oneself with other similar minded musicians from around the world.  Pretty cool ! Cissy Strut is a funky, New Orleans type groove recorded initially by the Meters, and then performed and recorded by so many musicians.   Scott suggested the tune and we've decided to style it after a favorite version recorded by John Scofield.  We've lined up some great great players to bring Cissy Strut to SoundCloud - Scott Nelson and Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on guitars, Mirko "Stringburner" Borach on bass and Alpha Roots with his signature djembe sound.  Scott's got the first solo and plays sweet rhythm guitar over the track, Pinner takes the second guitar solo, and I follow on Hammond Organ.  What fun this was for all of us.

Cissy Strut - with Scott Nelson, Stephan Lipinski, Mirko Borach, Alpha Roots and Jamie Rhind

When the brilliant George Michael died, the idea of recording something to commemorate his passing became important.  George's huge hit Freedom 90 was the decision, and for the last two decades has been one of my all time favorite tunes.  I was fortunate to have seen George twice perform this in the early '90s at Madison Square Garden, and the concerts left me moved each time.  Freedom 90 calls for a vocalist of extreme range, competence, and a theatrical sense (named 90 because GM had already released a tune called Freedom when he was with Wham) and after reflection I asked the wonderful British vocalist  Nick G Coward if he would join me.  Nick was thrilled, and in fact (not surprisingly to me) was a huge George Michael fan.  You will just love what Nick has done here, adding so many vocal tracks of harmonies to bring to life this huge hit.  Brilliant stuff - really great. So What - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski / guitar

A special treat to be recording again with the superb guitarist Stephan Lipinski and for the first time the young Norwegian keyboard prodigy William Paasche - "Snuppeluppen".  Stephan and I have recorded a lot together here, and he's always bringing such a musical sense to his playing, elevating music to a higher level and creating solos and often rhythm playing that makes music come alive.  Here Stephan has created the angular and explorating head, and then follows Snuppeluppen's outstanding synth solo with splendid guitar.  Snuppeluppen's synth and organ and piano work is nothing short of remarkable, and at the young age of 19 is already reaching for the stars - well outside our atmosphere.  He's headed off to one of Norway's leading schools of music in the fall.  Amazing soloing from both that inspires so many here.  Follow both of these special musicians:

Back with Stephan 'Pinner' Lipinski on a funk fusion original I wrote for Stephan, entitled Pin Up.  Perhaps Pinner can say here where his name originated, but for me a play on words.  Stephan's simply a fabulous musician and guitar player, rooted in jazz and fusion and blues, in the style of great jazz guitarists John Scofield and Robin Ford, both of whom played with Miles Davis in the '80s.  The stuff I love most and we all groove on.

Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.
