Dancing Fool - with Ian Tait / guitar

It's been too long since Ohio bluesman Joe Bongiovanni and I recorded a tune together, so I wrote this one with Joe's soulful and lyrical playing in mind.  Joe has several times been a finalist at the World Championship of Blues Guitar, and it sure shows in his beautiful playing. Feelin' Blue - with Joe Bongiovanni / guitar

For those of you who haven't discovered Orlando "The Don" Lund, here's your opportunity.  Orlando is a serious pro, having built a career as a writer, multi instrumentalist and producer in London during the '90s Soul Funk era, leading and creating with some of the finest contemporary jazz and funk musicians in Europe. Orlando approached me about playing on a tune I had released here, What the Funk, quickly sending 5 tasty tracks to me - a solid grooving bass line, a congas line, two rhythm guitar tracks and a George Benson style guitar solo.  I've worked them all in here, adding them to all my keyboard parts, creating some sweet soul jazz for your listening pleasure. What The Funk - with Orlando "The Don" Lund

This is the 10th tune coming from my 13 song suite called ''Celebrating life'' that I composed and interpreted by the last 4 months of 2012. As you know, I am reposting all these songs (only 3 left :) with a new guest collaborator and rename the suite ''Celebrating life with friends'' 

For this posting, I have two wonderful collaborators: Jamie Rhind and Michael Orzek and also known as Land of Orz . They are two brilliant musicians! Michael is a polyvalent guitarist which is very performant in the blues/rock/funk musical environment. Jamie is a superb Funk/blues/Jazz/Fusion keyboard player. I call him the funky man! :-))) As you might notice he is a very active collaborator on SC

Both have performed fantastic solos but I would like you to take a moment to focus on their rhythm section performance. You will see that they are in fusion with Band In A Box Basses and drums (I used three different basses and three different drums for this track! eheh!!!). Each of them is playing in sync with each other or playing in between each other!

Oh! Before I forgot, this is the first time that I organized a disorganized ending! So imagine a band which is playing this song very tight (which it is true in this song) then the drummer miss the ending break and suddenly all the musicians try one after the other to end the song (first the Michael, and the bassist) than the horns try to take the lead with a good ending but the pianist put his own ending with a weird chord… All that organized in purpose by me! :-)))

Here is the story behind this tune: 

Oxy is not the name of the bear!:-) It is the three first letter of one of the chemo medication called oxyloplatine (not a good word for a title). This medication had two very bad side effect: first, I could not approach any cold environment (I was not allowed to go in the fridge without mittens) or eat cold food and beverage ( bye bye White wine, Rosé, milk and Ice cream and so on… in July) 

But the worst side effect (especially for a clarinetist) was that I could not breathe properly! I was always out of breath, so much that my oncologist told me after examination (scan), I was developing a chemical pneumonia and if I do not stop this medication I could die! So I did not hesitate  and it was BYE BYE OXY with the result of BYE BYE BLUES! :-))) this is why my sonority a bit shaky on this original recording ;-)

Excited to release this heavy fusion tune with the always superb Mike Orzek on electric guitar https://soundcloud.com/lando-orz.  Mike is such a talented player and has a unique ability to find the right sound and mood and note selection for whatever is put in front of him.  I just love what he has added with conception and playing to Creeping Around, his ability to bend notes and sound and to complement the other instruments.  This is our 9th tune together and a really exciting one for me.

Here's another original, Get Funky With Me, with grooving jazz guitarist Scott Nelson bringing it home.  We've set the tune up as a soul jazz groove with rhodes and piano, trading off with Hammond B3 organ and Scott's super tasty electric guitar.  Scott is new to SoundCloud, hails from Pennsylvania, and is simply a superb guitarist and musician.  On this track he brings a definitive John Scofield influence, reminding me of Sco's electric work on A Go Go, with organ and keyboard player John Medeski's group. Here's an original reggae tune brought to life by three very fine musicians, Alpha Roots on guitar, Julien Apelian on keyboards and piano and Ian Greaves on vocals.  Alphio is so deeply rooted in serious reggae, and brought his great understanding and love to his riddim guitar work.  Julien as always has contributed sweet playing and ideas with two keyboard tracks and also the two fine synth solos.  And Milwaukee's Ian Greaves's sweet lyrics and vocals tell the story.

Fresh Air - with Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski / guitar

1971 was an important time in music, where electricity was changing the landscape and Rock, Funk, Soul and Jazz were all merging into psychedelic grooves.  Marshal stacks were often taller than the players, the players were higher than the Marshal stacks, Strats and Les Pauls were the axes of choice, Hammond B3 Organs and Fender Rhodes keyboards could compete for volume with the guitars, and the hair was even longer than the jams.   Woodstock was a recent memory, Jimi Hendrix had just passed but had moved into the funk and soul inspired Band of Gypsies period, Sly & The Family Stone was heating it up with heavy funk and soul inspired grooves, and Miles Davis had just released the seminal Bitches Brew fusion double album that literally changed music.  This was where it was at, with each of these musicians and bands being influenced by each other.  Great stuff that produced legendary sessions and recordings and pushed music forward with power, energy, groove and volume.  

1971 commemorates this time and mindset, and recreates the feel with friends from around the world who continuously exhibit this spirit, energy and hair in their playing:

A couple of words on each of the players:  ALPHA ROOTS - Alphio was the perfect choice to add his soulful African djembe percussion voice.  One of the most prolific and inclusive musicians here on SoundCloud, always speaking with a positive voice.  Check out his often reggae and dub inspired recordings.  RICKARD FROM - my favorite B3 player here on SoundCloud.  We haven't recorded before but wanted his beautiful sound and also wanted these other heavy cats to be introduced to his Jimmy Smith type playing.  STEPHEN "PINNER" LIPINSKI - one of the hottest jazz fusion guitarists on SoundCloud, bringing more modern Scofieldesque jazz lines and harmonies to 1971.  SCOTT NELSON - another burning jazz and fusion guitarist, Scott sound combines elements of the contemporary guitar masters - Scofield, Metheny and Martino - to create his extraordinary playing.  MARCO OVERSTEEGEN - no one on SC has a closer overall sound to Hendrix, and we needed Marco's fabulous rhythm playing and soloing to anchor this 1971 mood.  JUSTIN VALENTE - Justin's my favorite blues rock guitarist, and just had to be a part of this summit, bringing us that heavy electric sound of Jimi, The Allman Bros, Freddie King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I liked Terry's guitar play right away and after some time had passed I asked Terry for a collaboration. I told him that I had some interesting ideas to let it grow :) After having edited Terry’s recordings for a straight drums I added my lyrics/vocals and bass guitar, some percussion and an appropriate amount of claps & snaps. Since I am a great admirer of Jamie’s keys playing I asked Jamie Rhind to add his instrument and he did this so well I must say. It changed the flavor of the piece immediately. Next I found the wonderful sax player David Milzow from Germany willing to add his wonderful saxophone solo. From the start I held in mind to ask NayJ for adding her vocals too and thus make a funky duet together. Well… she did! :)) So now we can all  proudly present to you our FUNK STATION!

The track is kind of a wink to ‘Soul Train’ the most funky and inspiring television show in the Seventies. You can find those on YouTube and I can recommend to have a look and listen because this show was just amazing. All great funky R&B soul singers and bands from that era came along. For instance The Jackson Five, Donna Summer, Tower of Power and James Brown. Since the funk stole my heart for many years I felt now was the opportunity to celebrate the funk all the way. For the occasion I chose to give it a cinematic ambiance by creating a logical environment for our sweet funky station. I blended the music with a number of outdoor and indoor samples to put it all together so that it would sound like it’s recorded in a station hall. I sincerely hope you guys enjoy the result as much as we did recording/producing it!

How great to be recording here with Austin, Texas' Jeff Michaels.  Jeff is a serious guitar master, having 6 albums to his credit, and consistently pushing the boundaries of blues.  Heavy electric blues, funky stuff, blues rock, killer Texas shuffles and more, Jeff brings energy and soul to everything he touches.
