Fall Collabs - Recordings with SoundCloud Friends

Inspirational and a mentor he has been to so many around the world.  So many countries.  Yesterday Tom surprised us all with a Soundcloud farewell jam and so we thought it would be best to get right back to him to let him know we digged his efforts for us all here.  On Payday,  Justin just takes this one home for Tom, as only Justin can.  He's picking up the organ and drum groove and spinning it around silly.  Heavy blues rock sound from New Jersey!! Payday - Tribute to Tom Adams - with Justin Valente / guitar

Together.    A remarkable gathering of more than twenty of my favorite SoundCloud musicians.  Guitars, keyboards, basses, tenor sax, clarinet and vocals. Together's musicians are serious creative instrumentalists and are inspirations to so many.  Many are recording artists.  The finest players I know here.   So many are simply remarkable.
   
Together represents what SoundCloud is about, and how effectively musicians can work across the world.   Musicians who have never ever even spoken with each other, but recognize each other by their sounds and the notes, rhythms and phrases they play.  Pretty damn cool.

12 countries are represented here  -- Canada, Dubai, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and the US.   

There are two sections to the piece - a blues piece and a modal fusion section, with soloists across each part, showcasing their distinctive voices.  Vocalatti's beautiful singing is woven throughout the piece - her words and voice really pull us together.  The wonderful keyboard head during the opening and closing was composed and performed by Calaminus, who also has added the great organ comping you hear throughout.   The first and last soloists are brilliant musicians and soloists, as are so many throughout.    

It's been such a pleasure to pull this together over the past 3 weeks.  So sit back and enjoy a true SoundCloud experience.

This was something special! This track is a collaboration between Daniel van den Berg aka Danarchx on guitars and Jamie Rhind on Organ, strings synth and bass Synth. We aimed for a kind of Deep Durple meets Al Di Meola meets Yngwie kind of thing. It was cool and courageous of Jamie trying on a loud rock/metal piece but the result is... Well you judge!

I was talking recently with a good friend I met here in SC; Jamie Rhind https://soundcloud.com/jamie-rhind :  wonderful keyboard player, composer and producer living in NYC, the creating force behind "Together" https://soundcloud.com/jamie-rhind/together-the-soundcloud-worldwide-stage-collaboration-23-musicians-from-11-countries marvelous track showing the music spirit of SC. 
After this talk, I tried to play something and ask him to put in there a spark of his magic.. well, he came out with a beautiful and warm melodic trumpet line, and a "celestial" chorus (all by his fingers in the keyboard).
So, I´m really proud to present here the first BIT in SC collaboration.

Dan van den Berg steals the show here on a Miles type modal groove, while breaking a high E string in the process.  See if you can find where:)  A special tune for us to toast Miles like this.  From the late 60s on Miles always had one or two super serious fusion guitar players on stage with him - John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty, John Scofield, Robin Ford and Foley. Taking It Up - Dan van den Berg / Jamie Rhind

Created this tune to shed some reflection on the most difficult ongoing and escalating situations that exist in the Middle East.  The extraordinary Canadian Clarinetist Michel Martineau graciously accepted the challenge to join the music and has created a wonderful line that weaves in and out to complement the pulsating rhythms and modal melodies. Sunrise Over Baghdad -  with Michel Martineau / clarinet

Always exciting for me to have an opportunity to perform and record with Norway's brilliant fusion guitarist, composer and recording engineer Ronny Heimdal https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal .  I started working on this tune late this summer when one of other favorite guitarists Justin Valente https://soundcloud.com/justin-valente sent me a funk track to collaborate on.  6 weeks went by and I was waiting for Justin to add his solos to it.  But I forgot the original track had come from Justin and then asked Ronny to do his thing with the opening and solos, and posted, without giving credit to Justin for setting the groove - or even the original idea.  SO SORRY JUSTIN!  Memory lapse!

With the new tune, Ronnie kicks it into high gear immediately on this funk fusion jam, and just doesn't let up.  Not only is he bringing his A game to make this come alive, but he's also brought his knowledge and ear to create the right sound and balance.  If you are fan of superb guitar, of jazz rock fusion, and of modal pieces, this one's for you   -  Go Ahead Ronny...named after a classic tune Miles Davis did on Big Fun, with John McLaughlin stretching it out over a modal groove....  Perhaps I should rename it So Sorry Justin:)

After the Race there are the tumbling weeds carried by the wind flying by, rolling on the highway. This is part 2 of the Drager Dracers on the Spanish Highway, with the marvelous allround musician and keyboard master extra-ordinaire Jamie Rhind.
The track has the same basic structure of harmonics and melody but taken a pace down to let it sing and linger. Hope you like our second escapade on the Spanish Highway!

Tumble Weeds on the Spanish Highway - Part 2 - Featuring Jamie Rhind

What a special treat to have the opportunity here to bring Vocalatti's sultry singing and Flutemaker David Williams' gorgeous flute sound together on the favorite of ours, George Gershwin's classic Summertime.  So many here on SoundCloud know Vocalatti's delicious and warm vocals, and she certainly sets the tone early with her smooth and soulful voice.  And speaking of voices, there isn't a finer flute player on SoundCloud than Flutemaker David Williams, who when not laying down the most elegant tone and phrasing imaginable, designs and makes some of the very finest flutes in the world.  In the world.  The two of them sound so wonderful together, and despite the cool fall weather across much of the northern hemisphere, we're bringing Summertime to you.

So we present to you Summertime, with Vocalatti singing, David Williams on flute, and I am covering the rest on keyboard.  The photo was taken this summer on a vacation we had in beautiful Menemsha, Martha's Vineyard, outside David's hometown of Boston.

Summertime - with Vocalatti and Flutemaker ~ David Williams

Footprints is one of the most famous jazz tunes of all time.  Written by the incomparable Wayne Shorter, perhaps the greatest jazz composer of the 20th Century, Footprints is simply a classic and right of passage for jazz players.  The tune was written in the mid-60s, when Wayne was huge part of Miles' seminal quintet, and already one of the top Tenor Sax players in the world, and before he left to help form the fusion band Weather Report with Zawinul and Jaco.

Footprints' form is a modal blues, and graciously joining me here are two of the very finest modal players and instrumentalists on SoundCloud - Canada's Michel Martineau on Clarinet https://soundcloud.com/michel-martineau  and Norway's Ronny Heimdal on guitar  https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal  

Michel's most important musical mentor has been Wayne Shorter, so it was only fitting that he be an important part of this recording.  Michel has created a beautiful harmony line to complement the head, when doubled with clarinet and a synth trumpet patch, bringing a warm color and his elegant phrasing to the recording.  His soloing evokes Wayne's searching, and is simply marvelous.

Ronny's superb guitar playing and musicianship has stood out to me since I first found him here on SoundCloud and asked him to play on my fusion composition Busting Out, which he just tears up.  He has impeccable rhythm, an appetite for improvisation and musical excellence, and a complete understanding of jazz-fusion.  His music here on SoundCloud is quite electric:), so he toned it down a little here to mix in with the acoustic clarinet, trumpet and piano lines.

I've been looking forward to recording this classic, and we are so very pleased with the music we have here.  Please check out both Ronny and Michel's galleries, including Michel's gorgeous 13 compositions he wrote and collaborated with during his previous bout with Colon cancer, one for each of his chemo sessions.   They are very sensitive pieces given the difficult to impossible road ahead that Michel was facing at the time, and stand as perhaps the finest collection of pieces and collaboration I have found here.  

Michel just learned less than two weeks ago that this most serious Cancer is back, and will have to aggressively fight it again, but has recorded Footprints because of his love of jazz, of Wayne Shorter, and because of how much your positive comments and words of feedback mean to his healing process.   While not one of his original 13 compositions, I will always think of this collaboration in a similar fashion, where you hear the beautiful voice and spirit of Michel's clarinet and Ronny's guitar as they reflect on some of the music that has been his most important over time to us.  

A true honor for me to perform with these professionals.  Enjoy Footprints.

Guitarist Joe Bongiovanni is a blues master, laying his heart and soul into every note that he plays.  It's about the passion, the emotion and the taste for Joe, as it should be for all musicians.  Joe not surprisingly qualified for the upcoming world championship of blues, no small feat, and is simply one of my very favorite guitar players...because of the emotion and tone that comes forth with every measure and phrase.

So now Jamie Rhind and myself have made our collaboration into a Trilogy Suite! This is Part 3 of our excursions "on the Spanish Highway". After the heavy thundering "Drag Racers", the eerie "Tumble Weeds", here now is the melancholic acoustic part 3: "Day dreamers". Or Soñadores en la Carretera Española, if that's correct in Spanish... We had great fun again making this romantic version, using the same themes, but taking it to a flamenco jazz fusion remake. We hope you like our part 3!

Daydreamers on the Spanish Highway - Part 3 - Featuring Jamie Rhind

How great it is here on SoundCloud to have the chance to perform and record with pros, and when I first heard Daniel https://soundcloud.com/danieleturani I knew immediately that I wanted to play with him.  Daniele's superb musicianship and creativity is featured here on In The Mode, a modal fusion tune we did together that comes to life with the aggressive back and forth soloing we both love made famous by John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer, and others back in the 70s and since.  Modal tunes hold on a tonic, allowing the musicians to create lines over the single chord, instead of moving between chords.  Check out where Daniele takes this one - it is a perfect complement to my synthesizer playing.  We are really thrilled to be releasing our In The Mode as our last tune of 2014 - and to start the new year for many listeners as well.  Hoping you enjoy our sound here.

Here's a smooth souljazz recording Tom Adams, BigMamaDee (Debbie Deijkers)and I recorded recently.  Features BigMamaDee's beautiful voice, and Tom doing his George Benson interpretation.  Not the usual blues we have pulled off together in the past, but something a little softer and smoother to start the New Year with.  So great to be playing with SC's blues legendary duo, who have recorded more than 30 tunes here together.

Real Love - with Tom Adams and BigMamaDee

Busting out some heavy funk fusion for you with this one.  We've got three of my very favorite electric guitarists featured here  - all from up North in Europe -- Anders Moberg from Sweden https://soundcloud.com/anders-moberg-1 , Ian Tait from Scotland https://soundcloud.com/ian-tait , and Marco Oversteegen from The Netherlands https://soundcloud.com/marco-oversteegen .  I had invited them all to perform on the previously released Together world jam, and we've brought them back again for this extended jam.   Extra credit here goes to Marco, who helped create the backing track with his fine rhythm playing and comping.  You'll hear it behind all of the solos.  Anders opens this up, followed by Ian and then Marco to close.  I'm doing my thing on synth between the guitar soloing.

Funking Around With The Boys  - with Anders Moberg, Ian Tait and Marco Oversteegen - guitars

What a thrill to be able to record Jobim's all time classic How Insensitive with world class Brazilian musician Nanny Assis and Vocalatti   https://soundcloud.com/vocalatti .  Nanny is a fixture on the New York City jazz and latin music scene, performing regularly at clubs such as the Blue Note and SOBs (Sound of Brazil), where he leads the Sunday brunch jam sessions.  A consummate world class musician, Nanny is multi dimensional, as a percussionist, vocalist, composer and guitarist.  The opening verse is sung by Nanny in his native Portuguese, and Vocalatti is featured on the second verse in her native English.  All percussion is Nanny and Vocalatti has added some beautiful harmonies to her vocals.  

I first studied this beautiful bossa nova standard in the '80s with the late jazz guitarist Emily Remler.  This piece is dedicated to her for all she has meant to me.

How Insensitive - Antonio Carlos Jobim - with Nanny Assis and Vocalatti

Gotta love the open invitation from Scotland's finest SC guitarist, fuzzmaster and executive chef Ian Tait https://soundcloud.com/ian-tait to join him on this heavy funk rocker.  Ian's signature funky sound and outstanding Wah playing were just what the doctor ordered for me, so I jumped in with some heavy synth guitar patch to try and match Ian's electricity on my keyboard.  On this track I take the first and third solos.  Damn this was fun Ian!!!  You are back with a vengeance.

Funky Strat Strut - with Ian Tait / guitar

Here's an original Latin Jazz groove that includes the very fine Spanish flutist Santi-Caballero Mendez https://soundcloud.com/santi-caballero and German bassist Mirko Borach (Stringburner) https://soundcloud.com/stringburner.  Wrote this tune with kind of a Santana groove, and think you will love what Santi-Caballero does with his gorgeous flute playing.  I have the trombone patch solos.  Route 251 is named after the classic II-V-I chord changes around which the tune is built.
