Wrote this tune with kind of a Santana groove, and think you will love what Santi-Caballero does with his gorgeous flute playing.  I have the trombone patch solos.  Route 251 is named after the classic II-V-I chord changes around which the tune is built. Route 251 - with Santi-Caballero Mendez flute and Stringburner (Mirko Borach) bass

Excited to release Spring Blossom, an original jazz tune with three of the very finest true jazz players on SC.   I have known Alan for a decade, having worked and played with him here in New York.  He's a world class digital marketing professional, superb and highly educated musician, collector of extraordinary guitars, and created the melody here for Spring Blossom.  Santi-Caballero Mendez is a wonderful multi-instrumentalist from Barcelona, and plays saxophones and flute with both ease and taste.  Santi opens the tune up on alto saxophone.   This is my first collaboration with Manuel, who is from the island of Sardinia, Italy.  Manuel is a superb bass player, and performs here on his fretless 6 string - an instrument I am certain Alan would love to get his hands on:).  Despite being born with a handicap to his right hand, Manuel has overcome this hurdle to create and play remarkable jazz and fusion bass lines and music, in addition to drums.  I'm looking forward to doing some very electric fusion tunes with him too, as his understanding of bass and rhythm is simply stunning.  Straordinario.

Spring Blossom - with Alan Schulman guitar, Santi-Caballero sax, and Manuel Muzzu bass

Here's another collaboration just packed with funk and great players from around the world.  Represented on this tune are musicians from Germany, Spain, Scotland, France and the US (3).  Pretty sure you will enjoy this one.  It's an original funk fusion tune that lets everyone here stretch it out a bit.  Germany's Mirko Borach (Stringburner) holds down the deep groove on bass, with Barcelona's multi horn player Santi-Caballero Mendez creating the head.  Solos from Mike "Land of Orz" Orzek with a fuzzed out wah guitar, Santi-Caballero smoothing it down on sax, Scotland's finest Ian Tait bringing it back up again with his signature electric funk guitar playing, France's wonderful keyboardist Julien Apelian on a great synth patch, and then New Jersey's fine jazz guitarist Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski bringing it home with his serious Scofield funk guitar style.  Wow.  So much playing here.  Great job guys!

Funk The Blues   -  Stringburner, Land of Orz, Santi-Caballero, Ian Tait, Julien Apelian and Pinner

Here's one For Miles.  For so many Miles Davis has been the ultimate influence on music.  From the 1940s through his death in 1991, Miles changed music no fewer than 5 times, moving it into new and unchartered territories, and bringing along with him some of the most influential players of each generation and ultimately, the 20th Century.  

For this tribute to Miles I have rounded up the very finest fusion players I know on SoundCloud to participate.  These are highly creative musicians, who understand what Miles has meant, the merging of electricity and jazz, and who are all superb improvisers.  

The trumpet is played by Vivek Patel, who brings with him the lonely Harmon muted sound for which Miles was so well known.  Vivek opens and closes the piece with elegance and with a harmonic and rhythmic edge that Miles was known so well for.  What a treat to have him join us.

Mirko Borach (Stringburner) anchors the essential modal bass line here, helping set and keep that funk groove.  During the 80s, the period from which this draws, Miles was playing with the great Marcus Miller and Darryl Munch Jones.  Think you'll love what German's Mirko brings as always.

The ordering of solos is as follows:

LA's Derek Cornet is a consumate musician, recording so many styles and composing significant pieces as well.  After hearing a fusion tune he recorded that reminded me of Mike Stern's playing (Mike was Miles' guitarist from '81 to '83), I wanted to have his playing on this tribute.  What a great start to the tune!

Australia's CHeeZ tackles the second solo and brings the fire and explosive playing he is know for on SoundCloud.  Anthony hasn't done things with other musicians here on SC and I wanted to give him the change to fly with these other heavyweights.  Wow.

New Jersey's Pinner - Stephen Lipinski - sits in for Miles' other famous early '80s guitarist John Scofield.  And does Pinner bust this out or what?  Bringing the same approach to rhythm and angular soloing that Sco pioneers, this solo is a masterpiece.  

Dan van den Berg follows Pinner with exceptional playing and virtuosity.  Listen how he weaves in and out with the moving chromaticism of my backing horn comping, nailing the movement perfectly.  Wouldn't have don't this tune without Dan, one of the true virtuosos on SC.  

New York based Alto sax pro Matt Criscuolo brings his Kenny Garret sound to For Miles, taking it in and out the way that Miles and Kenny did on stage together for so many years.   

Dutch fusion guitarist Rients Draaisma follows, with what is simply a remarkable display of sound and virtuosity.  This powerful solo showcases why Rients for me is at the very pinnacle of progressive fusion anywhere, pushing the very limits of concept and execution.

Spain's fine multi-instramentalist Santi-Caballero is our second horn, showcasing his tenor playing here.  Santi-Caballero takes it out all over the place here, moving in and out of the mode as Miles and his great '80s tenor player Bob Berg did together.

French keyboard player Julien Apelien is the perfect choice to join the team, and brings a great electric keyboard solo and sound in the style of Miles' Adam Holtzman, using fourths to create tension and ambiguity.

Mirko's fine solo technique is featured after Julien, and he just kills it on this one with his slap bass technique.

Italy's Daniele Turani has the concluding guitar solo and in his playing you will again hear a  superb sense of structure and organization, along with his virtuoso playing.  Such a treat to have him joining this Miles tribute.

For Miles concludes with Vitek's beautiful searching trumpet solo, which showcases his deep understanding and appreciation for Miles, as well as a modern jazz conception that also includes weaving patterns in and out chromatically similar to the great trumpeter Woody Shaw.  What a finish to this special tribute For Miles.

Latin Satin - with Santi-Caballero Mendez, Vivek Patel and Dan van den Berg

We're back again with Scratch and Sniff, having added Santi-Caballero Mendez's beautiful latin flute playing over a funky original.  Here's a fun one that combines a lot of sounds, grooves and influences, Scratch and Sniff. This original's built on a funky drum groove, where I discovered the ability to scratch using the pitch bend wheel on my synth, and then added some Latin jazz piano comping. With that sound in mind, went looking to find some players who's styles would complement the groove and immediately thought of Stuttgart's prolific Calaminus @calaminus and Boston's groovemaster MasterTonyD @mastertonyd, two real masters of funky groove. Each added to the overall sound, Jorg with some scratch sounds, the fun vocals and a little complementing horn to my Miles type muted trumpet lines, and Tony with a rock solid bass synth line. Then asked New York jazz guitarist extraordinaire Al Schulman @alanschulman to do his beautiful thing over the top. Thanks to the guys for working with me on this. A tough one to master, and I needed the liberty to do some splicing to get to this, as we have about 10 different tracks working together to find that Scratch and Sniff groove.

Scratch and Sniff - with Santi-Caballero, Al Schulman, Calaminus and MasterTony D

Have always wanted to record the classic Miles/Marcus Miller '80s groove Jean Pierre, and we've now done it.  Joining on this wonderfully simple funk fusion tune is the outstanding Santi-Caballero Mendez (Barcelona) on tenor sax, relative newcomer and marvelously funky guitarist SC Les Thomas (San Francisco)and my younger brother David Rhind on trumpet (Chicago), the ultimate Miles fan and follower.  Such a treat to have all three of these serious musicians and friends with us as we celebrate Miles' modal funk period.  Think you will really enjoy what each of these players brings here.  Jean Pierre was a staple of Miles' early '80s band, that featured Marcus Miller on Bass, Mike Stern on guitar and Al Foster on Drums.  I was fortunate to have caught Miles about 10 times in the '80s and our fusion band then also performed this.

When it comes to famous jazz tunes, nothing beats Miles Davis' All Blues.  This classic originally appeared in the seminal 1959 Kind of Blue album, featuring both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly. Check Alphio's music out.   That's the most important thing.  An inspiration to so many.  We lost him in March and some friends wanted to do something for him, in Alphio's spirit.

For Alphio it was always about space.  Less is more.  The beauty of the simplicity and the simplicity of beauty.  With that philosophy he created joyous music, in a spirit that I haven't ever seen here.   It was often his love, percussion.  Or the guitar or bass or vocals.  In the end, it was the spirit.   For me, many mornings waking up to Alphio's fresh reggae and ska inspired music, and always he would be there with a written voice too.  A great friend.  We will miss you dearly.

A big thumbs up to the musicians who have jumped in on this tribute.  Each of them are important creators - often across different genres.  It's been great to pull them together for Alphio.   And another thanks to Martin Jones, who brought out so much of the music here with his deep knowledge of sound, and to Annette for her inspiring lyrics and vocals.  And to all the musicians who jumped into the music.

Santi-Caballero Mendez joins me on a little original dance groove, Studio 54, named after the infamous New York City nightclub from the 70s and 80s.  Sam's such an outstanding snd versatile sax and flute player, and brings us back here to the late night escapades of The Big Apple.  Here's a little more on the famous former nightclub...
Studio 54 is a former nightclub and currently a Broadway theatre, located at 254 West 54th Street, between Eighth Avenue and Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building, originally built as the Gallo Opera House, opened in 1927, after which it changed names several times, eventually becoming CBS radio and television Studio 52.  In the late 1970s, at the peak of the disco dancing and music trend, the building was renamed after its location and became a world-famous nightclub and discotheque.  The nightclub founders spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on professional lighting design and kept many of the former TV and theatrical sets, in the process creating a unique dance club that became famous for its celebrity guest lists, restrictive (and subjective) entry policies (based on one's appearance and style), and open club drug use. Founded and created by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager in 1977, it was sold in 1980 to Mark Fleischman, who reopened the club after it had been shut down following the conviction of Rubell and Schrager on charges of tax evasion. In 1984, Fleischman sold the club, which continued to operate until 1986.
