OCHTENDGLOREN | Short Tales Part V

“Ochtendgloren” is a great Dutch word meaning “Dawn”. But in a more poetic sense, it has a sense of optimism, it holds a promise of a beautiful day to come. The morning dawns on the horizon...
The track travels through several different fields and textures, traveling acoustically through many different styles, I feel it’s hard to categorize where this would land in an overall description, but I guess World fusion comes closest. But it contains elements of classical, Jazz, flamenco, Latin, pop, rock, blues.

I play my Flamenco Negro guitar again in a setting of a guitar trio. In form it can be considered as a continuation of my Short Tales series. The lead guitar has long sections that are improvised over the bed of the two accompanying guitars.

I hope you will enjoy this fifth Short Tale and as always I really enjoy your likes, comments and shares. -Dan

We're All Feeling The Blues these days and this original reflects today's most challenging times.  It's a mess across so many places around the world and more than difficult for everyone.  Our thoughts go out to everyone as we are in this all together.  Joining on this blues are three other musicians from around the world, Vlad Olley, Georg Boehme and Gernot Baur.  Vlad is a really fine blues guitarist and also brings his blues harp (left channel) out to add to the authentic blues sound.  Gernot and Georg are both from Germany, with Gernot adding more blues harp sound (right channel) and Georg the tenor and baritone sax lines.  Follow each of these fine musicians:

Reach For The Sky is one of those collaborations that brings it all together with great musicians and great friends.  A big project that in total was more than 1GB, this soulful original gives everyone a chance to make statements and a chance for some fine ensemble work too.  Scotland's highly versatile Annie Smart so emotionally adds her voice and harmonies, Germany's Georg Boehme is on Bari Sax on this track, and Spain's Sam Mendez plays the flute.  Both weave in and out between the vocals, and above the wonderful bass of Italy's Daniele Petrocchi.  And playing guitars is Daniele Turani, also of Italy.  Everyone's in such fine form and it all gels so beautifully.  Follow each of these great players and creators.

Taking It Back feat. IPG1

On our new soul jazz original, Work You Magic, I'm joined by Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski grooving on guitar, and Jahn Neu's searching trumpet, as we navigate the blues.  I've done over 80 recordings with Pinner, and this one has me especially fired up over his sound, his drive and his superb playing.  In top form, Stephan pushes and pushes and his deep love for the blues comes through again.

My first recording with Prague's superb trumpet player and composer, and Jahn's sound here reminds me of Miles Davis, where the space becomes more important than the notes, and a unique sound the most important of all.  The listeners' ear searches for the beautiful trumpet sound, as Jahn's ambient, understated voice comes through softly, blending in so well with the groove behind it.
