Let’s Get Funky - Jamie Rhind & Friends

Thought I'd throw up a funky track with many syncopated layers.  I started with an internet guitar backing track and as the tune progressed, a John Scofield Uberjam  / a GoGo vibe came out - without John's unreal guitar playing over the top.  Check out John's two Uberjam and a GoGo albums if you are digging this track.  Check em out even if you're not too! The photo is of a famous storyteller in NY who was hanging out in Washington Square Park.  Loved his smile.  Thanks as always for listening and for your comments as well.

Funk You Up  - a Tribute to John Scofield

It's Friday so why not throw up some funk!  There is no one deeper than Herbie Hancock, so I created this funky tune as a tribute to Herbie.  Such an important influence he was across so many genres.  Herbie is the consummate musician.  A fellow native of Chicago, Herbie soloed with the Chicago Symphony at around age 12, started producing his own albums on Blue Note before he was 20, joined the legendary Miles Davis quintet in '64, and brought electronic keyboards with the Rhodes to Miles with the famous Miles Smiles album, then pioneering electronic keyboards in the late 60s with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  Miles had an album Get on Up With It, which is where I took the name from - a common phrase back in the late 60s and 70s..that James Brown of course used with his funky Sex Machine hit.  In addition to his incredible influence with Miles, Herbie left him around '72 to form the Headhunters, which then created what still is the best selling "jazz" album of all time - with Chameleon and so many other classics.  Herbie has meant so much to me that we named our first Beagle Herbie Hancock.  And was Herbie amused when I met him at a party and told him that.  Anyway, here's Get on Up.  I've used a real nice backing track with Swiss guitarist Hanspeter Kruesi https://soundcloud.com/music-pictures to set the groove and then added a number of keyboard and Miles like muted trumpet lines to bring it to life.  Get on Up!

Get On Up - Tribute to Herbie Hancock

A big shout out to my many friends and followers on SoundCloud.  Today marks 100,000 listens for me since I joined, and it has been a special treat to have gotten to know so many from all over the world so well, to really dig into and dig your personal playing and music, to have had the opportunity to record and perform with superb musicians, to learn from you and to greatly improve and expand my abilities on keyboard and with recording.  To commemorate this milestone I have created a funk fusion tune that is inspired by several of my favorite musicians - Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, and Herbie Hancock.  These creative musicians were often playing around with modal funk grooves, were pioneers of keyboards in their bands, and created ambiguity in their music between the minor and major third, as you here here.  They expanded boundaries, created genres of music, combined virtuosity with groove and space, and were all great listeners.

Thanks for all the love over the last year !!!!  So many have taken a substantial amount of time to listen to the music I have created and often with others, and so regularly to comment and to share their thoughts and support - often in a second language for them.

This song began at the end of last summer, August of '24, when Tez sat down and composed it on his guitar. He shared it with us right away, and while everyone jumped on it immediately, it sat on the shelf for so long because we all felt we needed a singer for it. Fast forward a year, and lo and behold, we picked up Carl, who is down for whatever vocals a song needs. 
 
 We began construction on this by creating the rhythm section. Ken first adding his explosive drums, followed by Josh completing the rhythm section with his four string, fretted bass, which he used a plectrum to play.  JJ entered the fray next, adding his otherworldly synth and thickening organ. 
 
 Then is sat. And sat. And sat some more, until Carl found us, or we found him, and he was finally able to add the missing puzzle piece. But before we put it to bed, Stephen added some thrilling solo work with his axe, too. 
 
 Now that it was a completed song, we asked Stephen to mix it, even though it's really Tez's song, and that honor would usually go to him. However Tez was experiencing some technical difficulty, so the honor went to Stephen, who did his always professional production work on it. 
  
This is a straight rocker from Eclectic Collective, being in all of our wheelhouses. This one was all made in house, too, so it's a great representation of our rocking skills as a band. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Josh had the idea of doing a traditional Palestinian song, as he is an avid fan of their music. He wanted to raise awareness of this music and tie it to the idea it may cease to exist as a living musical tradition sooner than later. Everyone in the band was immediately on board with this idea, and set about to make it happen.
Mark, who is an expert percussionist, composed a typical traditional Middle Eastern style drum pattern, together with an Arabic scale melody, played on the Qanun (a kind of zither). To that he added the instrumental 'Zurna' solo in the middle, various other traditional instruments, and even sang the high pitch yodel sound at the end. Josh found this pattern fascinating, and added his five string fretless bass to the it shortly after. Carl jumped in very shortly thereafter, and came up with some really amazing vocal melodies, as well as wonderfully prescient lyrics. He even learned more than several phrases in Arabic, which he sang in there, too. We were all very impressed by this, of course.
JJ was next up, adding his magical, melodic, and exotic saz, shakuhachi, and synth to the mix. Ken threw in next, adding his perfectly timed brass and Chinese percussion to the mix, too. Last, but certainly not least, Stephen recorded his subtle, exotic, traditional sitar to the piece.
Once we had it all recorded, we turned it over to Mark for a mix, as the whole thing is really his baby. Stephen mastered it, though, as he is our resident professional producer.
Our hope is that this song inspires you to dig into Palestinian music, and through that, you experience a taste of the magic and the beauty of that region, despite suffering victims of war are experiencing there. But most of all, we hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.
