No summary of New York City’s dance music history would be complete without Nicky Siano. As the owner and resident DJ at the Gallery, Nicky was electrified by a visit to the Loft and became hooked on New York’s emerging club culture of the ’70s. 

As a DJ, Siano pioneered techniques such as beatmatching, EQing, and using three turntables, creating the proto-disco sound via his preferred funky soul and R&B records. Leading the way for a host of legendary figures like Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, or Grace Jones, and Loleatta Holloway, Siano laid down the blueprint for iconic New York clubs like The Garage and Studio 54. He also worked in the studio with Arthur Russell  and after a hiatus returned to DJing in 1996.

Digging through our archives and we found this Nicky Siano mix recorded in the Button Factory in 2009. It was a very special night.

I've been playing  lots of Ron Trent's tunes in my recent Mixes and a few people asked me if I would make a set featuring his incredible music. Ron makes songs that tell musical stories, his beats totally make you throw your hands up, dance, and close your eyes and totally drift away... Most of Trent's gems are at least ten minutes or more and to be honest their still not long enough in my opinion.  I hope you guys enjoy this Deep and Soulful tribute to one of the great House Music DJ / Producers of our time!!!

Perhaps it’s a combination of his Haitian roots, his youth spent in St. Croix, and his New York City upbringing: It is evident when he steps behind the turntables or CDJs, where he is at once clearly comfortable and believe it or not, just a tad bit nervous. After more than 20 years in the business, yes, “The Kaizer” still gets butterflies. That’s probably what makes Kai Alce (pronounced al-SAY) such a force: He doesn’t settle down, blend in or go along. That integrity comes through in every gig he’s worked – from his early days at Detroit’s Music Institute when he was just teenager, to the 10-year-long DEEP legacy at MJQ that he co-founded, to the production company, NDATL, that he created in 2008. @kai-alce
