Chris Tye is a singer-songwriter who makes beautiful harmonic pop music with roots in a folk and jazz tradition. He is a sublime guitar player with a complex sense of rhythm, and a talented and ambitious composer and arranger of his music. But perhaps what strikes the listener first is his hugely distinctive voice, expressive and versatile, veering from melancholy to ecstasy, which at times recalls such important musical influences as Nick Drake, John Martyn, Grizzly Bear, The Beatles and Paul Simon. 


I have been a musician since a young kid (5 years old)---almost all self-taught--piano, composition. At age 11, back in the mid-1950s, taught myself to play blues and boogie woogie piano after listening to records by Hadda Brooks and Red Prysock. I also love improvised music--always have---along with all the subtle inuendos and voicings of jazz. I approach most situations with this philosophy. Though blues and boogie have been my musical base throughout my career, at any time during a performance I am likely to extend my playing into a number of directions that reflect various musical interests from classical and new music to folk and world traditions. For example, for the past few years my musical focus has been upon my Bell Projects in which I utilize large bells found in churches and public buildings within an concentrated area of a town for a composed hour-long bell ringing event. Also, since 2003, I have made several tours to west-central Russia where I have been performing with Udmurtian Folk musicians in concerts and workshops. Stateside, I have played music professionally since 1961---My touring band in the 70s-early 80s was one of the most popular touring bands in Midwestern USA winning several "Top Band" Prairie Sun Awards in a seven-state readers poll. I went solo in 1983, continued to tour extensively in Midwestern USA while expanding my schedule to include regular tours abroad. As a soloist, until 2005, I performed as one-man-band playing a Yamaha Electric Grand piano, Korg organ, a 20" Gretsch Bass Drum, ankle shaker, and Harmonica on a rack. In the present time I perform on acoustic piano, sing, and play a racked harmonica while keeping time with the ankle shaker. Inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in 2000, I am also a member of the National Academy of Recording Artists (Grammy Awards). As of 2006, I have recorded over 35 albums of mostly original material as of 2006, plus have recorded on at least two dozen albums of other artists.
