Highlights

Following a run of superb releases for the label alongside semi-regular studio partner Anthony Pappa, long-time Seladorian foot soldier, Jamie Stevens now returns to the front line, this time flying solo with a double headed beast of a release.

The man from down under is more widely decorated than most, notching up affiliations with the likes of Bedrock, Lost & Found, Einmusika and All Day I Dream across his long and illustrious career and now hits double digits for our own humble imprint.

‘Giovani’ opens the batting, a muscular, peak time, no-nonsense affair that will no doubt set many a dance floor alight this summer with its infectious, boundless energy.

In its slipstream, ‘Seeds’ plays the wingman role to perfection. Slightly more subtle in its approach but in no way less impressive, it weaves a seductive spell, skilfully luring you into submission.

Jamie Stevens and Zankee Gulati collaborate on the impressive 'The Rip' EP with remix support coming from Argentina under the sign of Paul Deep. 

Jamie needs little introduction, a stalwart of the Aussie prog scene since the '90s and prominent member of Infusion, his golden touch has affected 100s of records over the years culminating in a whos who of releases on seminal labels such as Bedrock, Balance Music and Coldharbour Recordings. 

Zankee Gulati broke on to the scene in 2011 and is making a real name for himself in Sydney's thriving clubland. A DJ and promoter primarily, his talents are now branching out to production. With releases on The Soundgarden, Balance Music and more, his distinctive sound is being to reach an international audience. 

Opening with 'The Rip' a tough mid set groove wastes no time reaching an early crescendo, where vocal chops and a wobbly synth line light up the floor. 'Utveckla' keeps up the pace with a low slung vibe with warm melodic flourishes perfect for the summer months. 

On remix duties, Paul Deep turns in two contrasting reimaginations. Firstly, the 'Basement Remix' takes us in a late night direction. Focusing on a hypnotic groove, the melodics act as layers of percussion all pointing towards a heads down stompathon. The 'Terrace Remix' sees Pauls lighter side; bouncy and joyous.

Since April 2020, Meanwhile has consistently shone a spotlight on the Progressive House scene with an ever-ambitious series of releases. Focusing on a dazzling array of impressive and innovative global artists, GMJ & Matter’s high-flying imprint witnesses another significant milestone. Celebrating its 50th release after a debut in the pandemic hit world of April 2020, Meanwhile returns to its Australian roots and an iconic figure in the progressive house scene as Jamie Stevens showcases “Mad Bells / Kanlan”. 

A legendary figure with more than two decades experience in the underground dance scene, Jamie Stevens requires no introduction to the Meanwhile cognoscenti. A winner of two ARIA awards with his band, Infusion, the Australian star has seen a career continue to flourish in an ever-shifting industry with his constantly evolving sound. Overseeing almost 450 production credits, Stevens’ continuing presence at the pinnacle of electronic music has found his work signed to a plethora of high-profile imprints that include Bedrock, Selador, Lost & Found and Balance Music amongst them. 

Finding a home on Meanwhile courtesy of June 2022’s 3-track “Circles” and remixes for Roger Martinez and GMJ himself, Jamie Stevens returns with a spell-binding twin-track offering. 

“Mad Bells” is a typically smooth and impressive offering with its pounding beat and off-beat hi-hat pattern. Subtle percussive elements gradually make their entrance to create a rolling groove, before a swathe of melodic elements bring the track to life. Gloriously effected vocal cuts span the stereo spectrum with ease before a huge 16th note bassline enters the fray in dominant, club-friendly fashion. Building with mesmerising intensity, glassy keys and chord progressions add to the aural landscape to create another transcendent piece from the Jamie Stevens studio. 

Partner track, “Kanlan”, continues the sumptuous palette of sounds as a pulsating bassline sits alongside heavy kick and ticking percussive top-line. An immaculate array of melodic characters is introduced at regular intervals as they wax and wane against the hypnotic bass and rhythmic characters. A stripped-back breakdown adds to the majesty as a new sustained bassline makes its play with a shimmering cast of synths and effects in attendance, before the pace is picked up once more with familiar phrases and a stunning cadenced pan-pipe effect in the third movement. 

Creating a superb musical diptych redolent in a rich and charismatic sonic narrative, Jamie Stevens excels with “Mad Bells / Kanlan”.

An artist with a select but impressive collection of releases to her name, Sarah Britton, has created a scintillating sonic palette through her Eko Centrik production soubriquet. Via a multi-faceted tapestry of sounds that cite Portishead, Sasha, Jon Hopkins and Max Cooper as influences, the UK singer/songwriter has created a unique amalgam of triphop, progressive house and electronica into a unique sonic identity. Able to harness modular synthesis with organic instrumentation and vocal expression, the Eko Centrik sound is equally at home in the shared club environment as it is in isolated headphone moments. A production portfolio that began with a 2018 debut for Incepto Smooth, then led to work for the ever-reliable Spring Tube, before releasing on Another Life Music and Londam in 2022 and 2023.

Now debuting on Balance Music, 'Half Light Island' is propelled but a deep resonant kick and ticking percussive hi-hat combination. A chorus of atmospheric effects redolent in delays and reverb add a rich sonic texture as progressive stabs and textured pads evolve into an evocative aural landscape. Ethereal vocal treatments blend effortlessly between the real and electronic before a breakdown full of modular finesse then blossoms into a club floor-filler where rhythm and melody combine in dynamic fashion.

An iconic figure within the underground dance fraternity, Jamie Stevens remains a leading figure whose meticulous production skills continue to excite and enthral. Jamie’s solo work has been in high demand from a legion of high-profile labels. Bedrock, microCastle and Guy J’s Lost & Found have all played host to his distinctive sound, while Balance Music has witnessed a clutch of superb original productions with Garance and fellow Australian, GMJ, and well as remixes for Jam & Spoon, Rich Curtis and Anton Tumas. Returning for a fourth remix, the Jamie Stevens reworking of 'Half Light Island' retains the central melodic themes of Eko Centrik’s work while a new 16th note running bassline provides dancefloor urgency. Cleverly using some of the more atmospheric components of the original, a swathe of additional production material pulsates gently across the track in majestic fashion. Waxing and waning with subtle knowhow, Jamie’s remix hits its mark time and again with precision engineering and a series of ever-powerful drops that create a seething, driving vibrancy.

'Inside' is a sublime collage of stepped arpeggio and complementary motifs that drift in easy fashion across a 5-minute timeframe. Evolving easily, a stripped back soundstage paves the way for a loquacious vocal treatment to take centre stage as it coruscates gently atop an intricate percussive backdrop and metronomic 4/4 beat.

The final track sees 'Sunflower' ripple with a sweeping flow of arpeggiated motifs combined with counterpoint piano phrasing, laced with stereo-panned white-noise effect at the breakdown. Driven by a chunky rhythmic backdrop that provides the perfect accompaniment for the melodic elements to shine, the result is a unique offering that epitomises the Eko Centrik sound and approach to electronic music.

An artist with a powerful story to tell, Hrag Mikkel has been at the forefront of underground dance music since 2017. Now returning to Proton Music for a debut original EP, "Cosmic Bliss / Silver Night" continues that adventure.

Born and raised in Lebanon under a raft of challenging circumstances, Hrag Mikkel's voice has resonated loudly through his inspiring sound and sonic mastery. A regular on the likes of Pipe & Pochet, Kindisch and Armen Miran's Hoomidaas, Hrag made a memorable mark on Proton Music with a glorious reworking of Nōpi's "Liquid Week" with fellow countryman Pambouk in April 2021. Now providing the label with two original tracks, "Cosmic Bliss" is a wonderfully imagined work that combines organic and synthesised melodies in sublime symbiosis. An effortless groove provides subtle urgency as glassy keys and counterpoint motifs collide gently against each other to create a palette of brilliant sonic colours. Rippling through a beatless break, melodic elements pick up the pace once more in the second half with poise and grace. "Silver Night" carries the same percussive liquidity as its counterpart with familiar elements continuing the narrative groove. Immaculately placed riffs cascade around each other in a delightful call and response as delayed synths and smooth keys create the perfect juxtaposition. Waxing and waning with ease, the various sonic elements create a typically rich aural tapestry that effortlessly showcases the Hrag Mikkel sound.

Jamie Stevens has been creating standout dance music productions for over two decades, both as part of the award-winning Infusion band and in solo guise. A veteran of such esteemed imprints as Bedrock, Lost & Found, Selador and Sudbeat Music, the Australian has been a regular on Proton Music since late 2019 with a quartet of exquisite remixes. Reworking Rudy, Petar Dundov, Magitman, and James Monro (the latter in April 2023), Jamie returns to Proton Music with a fifth remix. Reimagining "Cosmic Bliss", a powerful rhythmic force immediately comes to the fore with superb jungle sounds reminiscent of Future Sound of London forming an atmospheric backdrop. Taking familiar motifs from the original, his skill is to rework them into an evocative 9-minute extravaganza that fires off in new directions, not least in a spine-tingling bass progression and meandering pads. Hitting its stride with a storming breakbeat pattern in the second half, the combination of melodic prowess and dancefloor force illustrates a supreme talent still at the top of his game.

The final remix sees Pablo Maneiro make his Proton Music debut through his Mayro production soubriquet. Author of over 150 production credits, the Argentinean star quickly found his place through his effortless merging of genres which led to a 2018 debut on Renesanz. Since then, music signed to the likes of Mango Alley, Perspectives Digital and Miss Monique's Siona Records has seen Mayro making sizeable headlines supported but Eelke Kleijn, Armen Miran and Cid Inc. A clutch of releases on Particles was punctuated by the impressive "Crazy Thoughts" EP in mid-2022 as Mayro now makes his Proton Music debut. Reworking "Cosmic Bliss", a driving beat and ticking off-beat percussion provides a club-friendly framework from which familiar melodic phrases make their presence felt. Adding an array of additional production material in the shape of new motifs and shimmering effects, Hrag Mikkel's track is taken in a dramatic new direction, not least via a rasping, razor-edged bassline groove that powers the remix forwards. Pulsating waves of pads and stereo-panned effects add to the vibrancy in the second half to create a dynamic and visceral offering.

Starting 2024 with fresh new music, Meanwhile begins the year with two seasoned producers of the progressive house scene as Navar and Golan Zocher collaborate to produce, “Zoom Out”. A single remix comes courtesy of a legendary Australian artist.

A hugely respected artist within the underground dance fraternity, Navar has been at the vanguard of electronic music for over a decade. From early work for Klopfgeist, the Dutch star has been a regular on fellow countryman, Eelke Kleijn’s Outside The Box as well as Guy J’s Lost & Found and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music. Making his Meanwhile debut remixing Alex O’Rion in early 2022, the 3-track “Return of the Sun” at the end of the year shone an iridescent glow over Navar’s production credentials. Similarly, Golan Zocher is another artist with an impressive production portfolio to his name. Work for Clubsonica Records, Mango Alley and Darin Epsilon’s Perspectives Digital have lit up the Progressive House scene since a debut for Crossfade Sounds in mid-2016. Making his Meanwhile debut on July 2022’s “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2”, in partnership with GMJ on “Negev”, Golan Zocher now returns with another striking collaboration. “Zoom Out” is a beautifully mined progressive house gem that bristles with pounding kick and driving bassline zeal. A mesmeric groove rolls relentlessly forward as subtle percussive touches allow the track to build with ease. Evolving over its near 8-minute timeframe a series of interconnected melodies weave a magical tapestry where pads and subtle motifs cascade over each other in seamless fashion. A breakdown pause then allows for the development of melodic sequences to take centre stage in the second half to create a stunning and multi-layered track.

Jamie Stevens reputation within the electronic music industry is second to none. An artist with a career stretching back over two decades, his solo work has graced the finest labels including Bedrock, Balance Music and Selador. June 2022’s 3-track “Circles” EP marked a Meanwhile high point, followed by October 2023’s twin-track “Mad Bells / Kanlan”. Remixed by Navar in April 2023, Jamie now returns the favour with a typically inventive and dynamic interpretation that takes “Zoom Out” to soaring new heights. Via intelligent manipulation of track components, the Australian has created a pounding dancefloor epic that hypnotises through its sustained and rolling bassline. A subtle grooved rhythm plays atop with intricate placement of percussive sounds while familiar melodic elements flow freely around the rhythm and bass anchor. Adding a Vangelis-esque synth phrase at the stripped back mid-point offers a beguiling and fluid aura to proceedings as the remix picks up the dancefloor pace once more in another hugely impressive Jamie Stevens production.

Traversing a wide and varied soundscape, Navar & Golan Zocher have created a brilliant snapshot with “Zoom Out”, superbly aided by the peerless Jamie Stevens.

The heart and soul of Jamie Stevens' extensive body of work is his desire to deliver an individual experience, as he takes us on an excursion into the human psyche with each masterpiece. There are only a small number of composers within the electronic music realm that diligently share the same consistency, quality and humble nature of Jamie. This is Jamie's key attribute that will continue to be the center-point of his growth as he confidently remains a major contributor, and role model, to the house and techno community on a global scale.

Through two decades of countless offerings to the electronica world, two ARIA awards (with band members of Australian live act Infusion, whom are responsible for hit releases such as "Girls Can Be Cruel", "Natural" and "Better World”), collaborations and remixes with the world's most revered artists, performing on the grandest of all stages (Womb [Tokyo], Fabric [London] and other venues in places as far-flung as New York, Singapore, Moscow, Copenhagen and Taipei), Jamie’s most recent EP releases are a true indication that Mr Stevens has matured into a sophisticated artist with depth and consistency. Stevens' hugely successful 2013 release on microCastle, "The Wonder of You”, is best described by the label: "This is a production that comes from heart.” To really put the nature of this track into perspective, Guy J gives full respect to Jamie’s musical offering, describing the track as “one of the greatest musical pieces of all time”.

His follow up release on microCastle ("The Healing" EP released in 2015) has enjoyed global success and support from a diverse range of artists such as Lee Burridge, Joris Voorn, Hernan Cattaneo and Sasha. Charted at #2 in Beatport's Electronica chart and #7 in the overall Top 100, the EP, which includes Guy J’s remix of “My Tears Don’t Help Me”, is stunningly well-rounded and lends you the full listening experience. These releases are some of Stevens' best work to date and his DJ performances of recent times have shared the same notoriety.

Recent releases and projects include remixes for Guy J's "Lost & Found" label, Jeremy Olander's "Vivrant", a new original track for Dale Middleton's "Tarnished Tracks", an EP for "Crossfrontier Audio” (along with being a key contributor to the label’s new "Mentor Initiative”, which helping shape the local Australian artist talent, truly assisting in developing the countries house and techno young promising producers and composers) plus slowly working away on an album for microCastle.
