Swedish artist JÁNA is today sharing her second single 'Lotus'. Working with Swedish heavyweights @littledragon on its creation, 'Lotus' places JÁNA's soaring vocals alongside dreamy R&B and woozy, minimalistic electronica – lifted from her debut EP Flowerworks, due for release July 3rd, 2020.

In her home-made studio in her parents’ garage, JÁNA creates collages of lyrics, images and sound sketches until a distinct narrative for a song emerges. “My goal is to create a world for each song to live in. I pay a lot of attention to lyrics. I want them to hit hard, but still be art. I want the songs to have a variety of potential interpretations depending on which way the listener hears it," she explains.

Having previously opened live shows for Little Dragon since the band became fans of some of her early demos, 'Wild Roses' is the result of careful collaboration in Little Dragon's studio in Gothenburg. A song rooted in the notion of secrecy, honing in on the early stage of a fledgling relationship – the track introduces JÁNA as an incredibly exciting young prospect.

‘Lotus’ was born of a conversation she had with a friend about the issues they face when presenting themselves.

“My friend and I spoke about only being loved when showing off the 'final product', or 'the perfect version of yourself'. The Lotus is a flower that blooms in the most ugliest places. It can be seen as a metaphor to allow people to grow - something beautiful might grow from a less than beautiful situation.”

The collaborative experience with Little Dragon, JÁNA says, led her to be braver not only sonically but lyrically too, especially when it came to the deeply personal topics she decided to write about. Soon, it was evident that the EP she was creating was becoming a mediation on relationships as well as a chronicle of her own relationship.

JÁNA's second single 'Lotus' is out now, released May 27th.

Once again working with fellow Swede’s Little Dragon, “Buds” was co-written with band vocalist Yukimi Nagano and produced alongside drummer Erik Bodin and only reinforces the diversity that JÁNA brings to her striking sound. Following up “Wild Roses” and “Lotus” with "Flowerworks" and its single “Buds”.

Buds’ is a song about growth, but more specifically about growing apart from someone you love,” JÁNA elaborates. “Feeling a friction within a relationship without being able to change it.

"Buds" and the new EP Flowerworks are both available now.

JÁNA is an independent artist, producer and writer from Sweden. 

2020, JÁNA released her debut EP "Flowerworks" in a close collaboration with the Swedish band Little Dragon 
Less than a year later she was nominated for her first Swedish Grammy in the category of this year's R&B/Soul. JÁNA's music can be described as live-based R&B with electronic elements. She draws inspiration from artists such as Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean amongst others.  

Following up "Flowerworks" JÁNA released a stand alone single "Green (feat. VanJess)" featuring the American/Nigerian sister-duo VanJess.¨

In 2021 she released her second EP "Works", a B-side to her debut EP "Flowerworks" where she once again collaborated with Little Dragon, as well as Frank Ocean’s bassist Ben Reed.
 
That same year, JÁNA released a remix of the single “Joyride (feat. Vic Mensa) - Remix” now featuring VIC MENSA

JÁNA supported Leon Bridges, performed at Lollapalooza, Way Out West and All Points East UK during summer 2022. She is currently working on her debut album to be released in 2023.

Speaking on the release of her debut single, JÁNA said: "It was both fun and nerve wracking writing 'Wild Roses' – I let myself be personal. It's about this person I was beginning a relationship with, my first impression of her and what our relationship might become. This is actually the first song I've ever used a pronoun in, mostly because I thought it sounded ugly before, but now I feel like this song has been a part of helping me to not be so secretive about who I like anymore. The wild rose is an ancient symbol for something told in secret so I felt that it made perfect sense."

JÁNA today (21/10/20) returns with the follow up to her acclaimed debut EP 'Flowerworks', with new single "Green", featuring Nigerian-American R&B duo VanJess.

A delectable slice of R&B-tinged alternative pop, "Green" further accentuates JÁNA's tight grasp of melody and song construction. Arpeggiated synths are matched with atmospheric electronic flourishes providing a luxurious base for both JÁNA and VanJess' stunning vocal partnership.

Jazz-inflected R&B at its finest, "Green" is another huge statement of intent from the young Swede. 

JÁNA, (aka Stockholm based Johanna Andrén) was introduced to the world via her collaborations with Swedish heavyweights Little Dragon, on debut EP 'Flowerworks'. Widely praised across the board by the The FADER, COLORS, Lyrical Lemonade, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash Magazine and more, the EP was a mediation on relationships as well as a chronicle of one of her own past relationships.

New single "Green", featuring VanJess (whose latest song "Come Over" was named “Hottest Record In The World" by BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac) opens to the sound of imaginary fingers lightly playing a keyboard made of sunlight and distant voices, before drifting into an ambitious, modern R&B cut to rival the very best. 

JANA’s confidently whispered message of vulnerability and disappointment, partnered with VanJess' succinct exploration into the insights of true intimacy perfectly capture the essence of JÁNA's songwriting.

Speaking a little more on the background behind the track, JÁNA said: "Green is very straightforward to me. It’s reflecting on jealousy within a relationship. I’ve been giving jealousy a lot of thought - how we are so willing to give a person everything, except the romantic love of someone else - and how that feeling can eat you up. Like showing love in the form of jealousy. This song is really just saying why can’t we just enjoy things how they are, and leave our egos aside. The song name and idea is a little bit inspired by Green Eyes by Erykah Badu. I wrote Green with a friend over the summer in 2018 and it's been a firm favourite of mine ever since."

VanJess went on to comment on the collaboration: “It’s so dope to connect with a great artist like JÁNA through Instagram. If it wasn’t for that DM we wouldn’t have been able to hear such an amazing record. So glad to be a part of her art.”

It's in her parents’ garage in Uppsala in her home-made studio where JÁNA creates collages of lyrics, images and sound sketches until a distinct narrative for a song emerges. The result, is a unique, irresistible brand of R&B-tinged alternative pop that is sure to propel JÁNA to stardom.
