I hosted the DirtySounds Session mix show on radio myhouseyourhouse.net from November 2005 - 2015. It was broadcast live every Monday night at 10pm GMT/BST from my home in London.

Over the years it evolved to include regular guest mixes from DJs from around the world, many live from my home. Since December 2012 the first show of each month was a back-to-back session with Miro (SundayMusiq) to back up our monthly all-day Sunday b2b residency at Cafe 1001, Brick Lane, London (first Sunday of every month).

I ceased doing the weekly show after almost ten years because I was simply unable to commit to Mondays anymore as my touring schedule became more intense. It was hard to leave the station as I'd been there pretty much from the beginning, but the journey I took over that period really solidified my DJing and programming style, and evolved, along with my buying habits. As time goes on I will upload some more from the archives as I have almost every show recorded. I hope you enjoy revisiting these slices of history.

To introduce @janefitz as a legend of the scene borders on understatement. The UK selector has earned an almost cult-like following born out of her annual sets at Freerotation festival, co-founding London’s Night Moves parties (with good friend Jade Seatle - @jade-green), a more recent residency at revered club the Pickle Factory, a monthly show on @rinsefm, and a pre-pandemic touring schedule that took in countless clubs and festivals the world over. She herself admits to being committed to the scene for life, driven by a deep appreciation of the music above all else – and a constant desire to surprise both herself and her audience equally.

For her Patterns of Perception 82, Jane has recreated some of the warmth she felt during her visit to Berlin for a b2b with Eric Cloutier (@cloutier) at our party in November 2019, an event which remains a vivid memory on both sides. The mix features many records collected over the past year of the pandemic and not yet played out, giving it a sense of urgency and an uplifting quality that, for her, recalls an outdoor festival set in better days. “A bit of me was kind of longing for playing on the side of a Japanese mountain again or for all those festivals you do in the summer,” she says. “I wanted to have people stomping on a forest floor.”

During summer lockdown 2021, it was forbidden to have dancing at parties. And so when exemplary north-east London record shop Hidden Sounds asked me to DJ at a sitting-down event, it seemed like the perfect workaround, and a wonderful excuse to explore some deep corners of my record collection. 
Think blankets, incense, rugs, chess, cushions, fungi, tea and 50 people laying around in a cosy space for a psychedelic, horizontal, evening listening session - pure bliss!

Been off air for months due to technical issues, so wanted to come back nice and easy and with something different. Didn't get to play about three-quarters of the music i'd pulled out for this, so i reckon I'll do another ambient/chillout/spacey show again soonish x

In spring 2023 I made a second trip to Precious Hall in Sapporo to play again with the wonderful Occa at his Archiv party. This time we took things deeper, darker, more disturbed... at one point we were playing in almost total darkness, completely absorbed in the mesmerising, truly immersive sound system.
Essentially this serves as the second part of the mix I did there in 2022, and hopefully marks a succession of annual visits to this beautiful looking and unique-sounding venue.

We’re delighted to share a true collectors item of a mix; a 7 hour b2b from Jane Fitz & Carl H, recorded at Transmissions in Studio 94, London in December 2021.

Some live recordings need to be put out quickly before the music ages and the records become overplayed, but not this one. It could be from any time over the years as timeless-tune-after-sought-after-banger are built and blended with the kind of precision and flow that can only come from DJ’s like Jane and Carl. 

From the low-slung start spanning EBM and downtempo gems through to the tunnelling psychedelic crescendo, this is a true masterclass in how to build and pace a set… and it sounds just as incredible today as it did on the night.

Beyond the A13 - music from the outer reaches of East London and Essex

Growing up on the edge of London, where the east end meets Essex, and industrial wasteland meets suburbia, my life was always reliant on four main arteries to get me to school, to work or to parties: the A13, the District Line, the London-Southend railway and the number 5 bus route. Running from the heart of London to the edges of the Thames estuary - I can’t imagine how much time I’ve spent on these trains, buses and roads looking out the window, at a landscape totally bereft of beauty, but to me, somehow always full of life and wonder.

This mix consists entirely of music that was either made or released within the areas touched or bordered by these transport links, between 1990-1997… from Canning Town, Grays, Stratford, Horndon, East Ham, Benfleet and other stops in between. Why dedicate a mix to this area? Because this is music from where I grew up, from when I was growing up. Most of it was ignored or overlooked or just forgotten - a mix of progressive house, trance, acid house, techno, breakbeat, tribal and deep house, all sounds that I like to combine when I’m DJing. It’s the sound of home…

"Every track on this mix was made in Italy during the early to mid 90s, mostly, but not exclusively, from the north. A lot of it is from Toscana, home of Tropical Animals. It’s my tribute to a specific fluid and entrancing music that has shaped my sound as a DJ for the past eight years or so. Not as well known Italo, Cosmic, minimalism, deep house,  or even Italy’s psychedelic rock, but it’s a sound that brings in elements all of these. But this sound is something different  - dynamic, imaginative and full of drama. It’s hard to mix, because most of the records have long, twisting intros and the tracks don’t stop changing and evolving until the very last bars. It doesn’t play by the rules. Progressive, yes. Trance, techno, house? Maybe a little bit of all. To me, it’s simply the unmistakeable sound of Italy, the sound I love"
