Music flows like Minnesota water from the mind, fingers and voice of singer-songwriter Sterling Haukom, a native of Rochester.

Haukom, 27, writes original, graceful lyrics that reach poetic quality.

"There's some songs that, they just kind of pour out," he says. Of course, he admits others take him to a place where "I have to fight them all the way through."

His fans are the beneficiaries of both.

It's common when Haukom plays his song "No Diamonds" to see an audience member or two leaning back in musical ecstasy, eyes closed to better soak in the sounds that he makes, ranging from almost imperceptible silvery hints to forceful venue-filling clarity.

His prolific lyric-writing ability allows his performances to touch the inner soul:

From "No Diamonds" —
      I'm going to close my eyes
     And dawn a new disguise
     Distractions can be the cure
     There are no diamonds here

Haukom's vocals and instrumentals, as a result of words like those above, become the brush strokes on his lyrics-canvas, a canvas that resides in the ears of his fans.

His easy style and affinity to let out a spontaneous chuckle endear him to audiences. 

Give him a stage and a mic and he'll give you three hours of uninterrupted, self-written folk music that will still be running through audience members' minds the next afternoon.
