Biography

Thee Dang Dangs are a Denver, CO based 4 piece Psych Surf Garage Rock band. Thee Dang Dangs are a delightful fusing of fuzzy surf guitar riffs, and reverb-heavy psychedelic vocals by frontlady Rebecca Williams. Their sound conjures up images of dirty bums wandering around on Venice Beach in the 60s in a hazy search for something heavier to cave in droopy eyelids. The most succinct description I’ve read of their Stone Coast EP (from Westword’s review) is that it “sounds like it was recorded in the bathroom of a Sunset Strip titty bar in 1967.” I dare you to have a listen and not visualize this image.

Williams’ reverb-soaked squeals and wails melded with the cloudy guitar lines and terse percussion patterns like a funny cigarette matches the crackle of your favorite Lou Reed record. There is something profoundly nostalgic and timeless in spite of itself about Thee Dang Dang’s music; they don’t have to come out and tell you who their influences are, because it’s so apparent within the sun-drenched howls and crunchy guitar riffs. Who knows, maybe they’ll become an act to revisit 50 years in the future, just as they are fondly recreating and reinventing sounds from our musical past right now in 2013.

They sound like the old, weird Los Angeles, with strains of true surfing music, American harmonies, Sunset Strip backbeat and desert ramble filtered through Goldstar Sessioneers.Pre-fuzz pedal ‘electrified folk’ music and pop groups hitting the California sound with the tambourine on just the right beat.This group sounds like bungalows in canyons; hidden deco stairsteps peeking from leafy hillsides; kustom kars and dovetails and chicks in OP shorts with long, long hair, like a Dennis Hopper photo come to life. You look at their well worn Fender guitars, their real surfer tans, their dusty suede boots - and you see it’s a sound natural to them; This isn’t an act.

The Reverberation Appreciation Society is proud to announce the release of the new Night Beats record, Sonic Bloom on September 24, 2013 on vinyl, cd, digital download and cassette (co-release with Burger Records!). In conjunction with the announcement, Night Beats are debuting their new track "Outta Mind" off Sonic Bloom, available for posting HERE.

Recorded in a Tacoma, Washington warehouse, Sonic Bloom is an explosion of reverb soaked rock and soul blended with sharp drone numbers and classic rhythm-and-blues founded tracks. From the haunting psychic groove of 'Seven Poison Wonders' to the sparse Zombies influenced 'Playing Dead' to the squealing ruckus of 'Rat King', Sonic Bloom harkens back to the outer corners of rock and roll radio of yore.

The Seattle-based band have spent past few years relentlessly touring, hitting over 20 countries. The trio -- featuring Danny Lee Blackwell on guitar/vocals, Tarek Wegner on bass/vocals, and James Traeger on drums/vocals -- will keep up this pace, touring this fall in support of Sonic Bloom.

Thrilling Cardiff-based noisepop five-piece Joanna Gruesome will be releasing their terrific debut album via Fortuna POP! (Europe) and Slumberland (USA) in September. Brimming with irresistible pop melodies and spiked with dissonant fuzzy jangle, their songs are shot through with loud discordant feedback and super-fast, hardcore punk drumbeats. This album sees their first foray away from recording in a living room to a proper studio under the guidance of producer MJ of the much lauded Hookworms.

Kicking it against sexism and homophobia, nothing is off-limits, drawing inspiration from DIY scenes such as Riot Grrrl/noisepop/C86 /K Records as well as post hardcore like Drive Like Jehu/Converge and the art rock of The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine, Joanna Gruesome offer a staggeringly diverse album, unexpectedly quiet and surprisingly loud.

Joanna Gruesome comprise Alanna on vocals, Owen on guitar, Max on bass, George on guitar and Dave on drums. They all met in an anger management counseling group. During the course they were told that writing, making music, dancing or painting could relieve tension and help reduce feelings of anger. One initiative involved a project where they were assigned a group to compose and perform a song in front of other members. Initially they found each other infuriating but gradually acknowledged their musical chemistry and decided to continue with the band outside the therapy group.

Most of the album was written during a month long stay in a seedy west Brighton hotel (now closed down) called The Hell House. The residents were pretty strange, kept attempting occult rituals/using Ouija boards etc and many of the songs were written to distract from the weirdness. Heart-wrenching and exhilarating in equal measure, these are not cheerful songs.

Awash with nods to mental illness and the dark recesses of the mind, the record is littered with references to the devil or zombies and allusions to comic books. “Secret Surprise”, in which mental illness takes a physical form and is fought using razor blades. Or "Anti-Parent Cowboy Killers," which is about stealing a scooter and driving it into the ocean when you should be in school LEARNING. Or "Sugarcrush," about spending a summer burning knitwear.

They have built-up a phenomenal live reputation, blending obnoxiously loud guitars and the occasional band uniform, with a high energy performance dispersed with quieter reflection, boy/girl vocals and teenage angst.

“Abrasion, anger, attitude. One guitarist is in the audience, but this isn’t too much of a stretch. There are slower parts where the musicians take a second to breath. There are noisier bits where the musicians take a second to reflect. There are thumpy bits where the musicians take a second to dance and enjoy themselves. Everyone’s smiling. Walls of Blue - Slowness

Winningly describing themselves as “evil shoegaze boogie woogie”, THE JANITORS are progenitors of their own brand of “stökpsych”. Based in Stockholm and signed to excellent UK psych label Cardinal Fuzz Records and danish bad Afro Records, THE JANITORS appear as an XL proportioned five-piece live. Ever fond of describing their own sound, the band pinpoint their output as “noise, monotony and pop songs”. Drawing inspiration from Spacemen 3, Loop and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the band are reminiscent of their Scandinavian contemporaries Dead Skeletons in their propulsive, longform psych bliss-outs.

The band’s debut full-length ‘Drone Head’ – which features group touchstone, the colossal 12 minute blow out ‘A-Bow’ – was issued to huge praise in June 2013. DrugPunk Blogspot accurately summed up the disc (and the band as a whole) as “slow-burn scuzz rock with a vengeance”.
