q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?
a. I recorded the mix just before the start of spring when things were looking a bit gloomy but that's not reflected in the track selection :)

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?
a. maybe during a slow n quiet morning, sipping a hot beverage

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
a. not an object per se but a big fan of the filtered light on the wall that comes in thru the window 

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. recently wrapped up an album that I'm hoping to release somewhere in the summer

For hour one quest?onmarq contributes ‘scrying for divine sines’ - "a meditation on contraction, expansion. austerity and excess. day and night. ever spiraling onward. waveform surfing toward greater realization of self via vibration.” For hour two Rayna shares “perspectives on ‘house’ as an ancestral healing technology”, a dance floor oriented mix of sounds that connect with the complex lineage of ‘house’ sounds while eschewing the whitened tropes that have become associated with the style as a genre within the European marketplace.

This set was recorded in the National Park of Circeo on the 24.8.22 a few meters away from the Tyrrhenian Sea. There were 60 people audience lying on the sand, a few candles and a 4+1 Turbosound system.
I played my own productions including a few unreleased tunes.

During summer lockdown 2021, it was forbidden to have dancing at parties. And so when exemplary north-east London record shop Hidden Sounds asked me to DJ at a sitting-down event, it seemed like the perfect workaround, and a wonderful excuse to explore some deep corners of my record collection. 
Think blankets, incense, rugs, chess, cushions, fungi, tea and 50 people laying around in a cosy space for a psychedelic, horizontal, evening listening session - pure bliss!

q. pls introduce yourself

I'm IRL (a. harvey.) I’m a sound artist and independent scholar based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

This mix was recorded during a late September sunset, in my studio in the Chabanel district. I always record my mixes live, meaning they’re mostly improvised. Generally, I work with a bank of songs I’m feeling and go from there. This one attempts to mimic the last dregs of summer: balmy late night thoughts, old memories bubbling up. 

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

In a quiet, comfortable space. During a slow burn, orange sunset. Maybe close to the earth, close to nature, close to water. 

q. describe a favourite object in your living room…

A candelabra that a brilliant ceramicist/friend [Diane Garcia Ramos] made. It was recently broken by a houseguest, so where it used to hold 3 candles, it now holds 2. It’s a sacred object, I still love it dearly even damaged. 

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

So many! I’m working on a podcast about sound/healing, set to come out in the spring of 2023. Also, two sound installations, another mix for my fav MTL label, a track for a special comp, grad school applications, and an LP. My work brings me so much joy <3

ETHEREAL - ELVEN DREAMS

Since 2014, UK-based label, https://soundcloud.com/astralindustries have been responsible for some of the most enlightening and entertaining releases of recent years. Their output has helped otherwise forgotten or out of print music see the light of day, provided new takes on previous classics, whilst also pushing forward new music by some of the most well-respected artists within the ambient genre. 

Debuting with a release by dub-techno legend DeepChord in 2014, Astral Industries went on to release Wolfgang Voigt's live project, Rückverzauberung Live In London in 2015.  In 2016 they followed with a 1985 recording from disbanded dutch collective Chi - a timeless and undoubtedly classic record, whilst in the same year pitching Wolfgang and Deepchord together for the very first time, with reinterpretations of Peter Michael Hamel's classic, Colors of Time. By then, and combined with the continually brilliant artwork of Theo Ellsworth, we knew that Astral Industries was a label with staying-power, and a growing catalog of releases worth collecting - be it just for the framed artwork, or moreover, the complete music package. 

In 2017, we've seen an LP by Heavenly Music Corporation, aka Kim Cascone (likely encouraged by the recent re-release of his own label Silent Records), a third LP by The Chi Factory, and then just last month a beautiful album by Waveform Transmission (Rod Modell of DeepChord and Chris Troy), with a sublime follow-up album, a massive 20 years after their first. 

The man behind the Astral Industries machine, Ario is a proven expert at plucking obscure gems from the past, or ensuring that good music gets the platform and artistic presentation it deserves. In just a few years, Ario has curated a highly respected and anticipated label roster that demands attention, and has yet to disappoint. The music is always gentle, deep and often extremely vivid, be it deeply hypnotic ambient, or gentle murmurs of dub-techno. 

With curatorial talents like this, we're overjoyed to host an exclusive 2hr+ mix of Ario digging into his record collection, and interlocking a few select exclusive Astral Industries bits in-between. It's one hell-of-a hypnotic journey and just like the Astral Industries releases, deserved of your full undivided, escapist attention.
