Alex Banks releases ‘A Way Out’ on Mesh. The track stands as the first single from his anticipated third studio album ‘Projections.

‘A Way Out’ is a heady dancefloor track with a foot in breaks and techno alike. Flanked by the artist’s signature pads and synths, it balances melancholy and optimism with stirring effect.

A stunning video for ‘A Way Out’ has been created by award-winning motion graphic designer Matthew Clugston. He illustrates the track’s contrasting moods with dynamic images of hectic man-made cities, manipulated and warped in time with Banks’ hectic breakbeats. When the emotive pad sounds join the melee, images of mountains and lakes take the place of the concrete streets and buildings, representing serenity in contrast.

Electronic innovator Max Cooper steps up to Atomnation with one of his standout remixes.

Cooper is someone who combines his academic background and science PhD with high concept electronic music-making. He has worked with machine learning specialists, often uses video to enhance his music and is someone who brings personal emotion as well as technical skill to his work. It comes on his own Mesh label as well as Fields and most recently in the form of his acclaimed Unspoken Words album back in March.

His take on Awe Kid's 'Eve' is built on breakbeats that float through space. Plunging bass dives down deep as the celestial ambient pads float up top. There is tension in that duality that tugs at you both emotionally and physically as well-crafted synth patterns unfold in their midst.

This is a heady, pensive track that is perfectly suited to those late-night moments on the dance floor and compliments Awe Kid's lush debut LP 'Body Logic' that was released in April this year.

Black Fancy makes his Hottrax debut this July with ‘M.M.M.’. 

A longstanding resident for Insane Event in his hometown of Parma, Black Fancy’s groovy rhythms have taken trips on labels such as Suara, Deeperfect and Whoyostro. For his next voyage, the Italian DJ and producer sets sail on Jamie Jones’ Hottrax with his funky two-tracker ‘M.M.M.’. 

Pumping basslines, energetic stabs and playful rap samples fuel the driving lead track ‘M.M.M.’, before electronic bleeps, loopy lyrics and snaking percussion combine over vibrating low-ends in the zesty finale ‘No Stoppin’’.

Following up last year's dramatic and well-supported Acid Summer, Undo returns to Darkroom Dubs with a release genuinely worth phoning home about.
Three tracks deep, Aliens Go Home is the Spaniards most comprehensive release for Silicone Souls label, with his cosmic grooves stretching and mutating in all kinds of directions.
We open with Portamental.' A playful take on the idea of portamento, it carries us smoothly into Undos never-ending world with its rippling hook and infinite chugging bassline. Resplendent with a touch of dark disco, a dash of deep house and a whole tonne of synths, it is the perfect opener.

The title track, Aliens Go Home' follows it's a much darker trip thats more direct and purposefully off-kilter. With powerful beats, a bubble-some acid bassline and carefully weaved human vocal elements into the mix as percussion, theres an otherworldly feel running throughout that will make all space cadets feel homesick.

Last but not least, Yellow Spark brings us back to reality with crisp electroid beats, dubbed-out waves and a sweet-but-solemn vocoder vocal. Poignant, emotional and electric in its intent and sentiment, it concludes another beautiful EP for Darkroom Dubs.

Included in this EP is a long awaited remix by the Palestinian Sama’ Abdulhadi showing off her take on ‘Muuden’. Videosphere, the debut album by Kompakt’s latest signing, the London-based artist Lake Turner (aka Andrew Halford), swoons into focus with “The Sunbird”, a teasing drift of lilting, ambient tones, riding out a submerged piston-pulse rhythm. Across its brief 109 seconds, it manages to traverse evocative terrain – something mythopoetic, something both humble and grandiose, a glimpse of the other behind the sky’s curtain. “I wanted to conjure up something resembling an ancient ceremony or death procession,” Turner nods. “Like a hymn to the surroundings of a faraway hill.” It’s both sky-bound and earthen, a ritual incantation to call in the music of the spheres.

Turner was introduced to the Kompakt family by his sometime collaborator Yannis Philippakis of Foals. He’d previously made music in post-punk and indie groups Great Eskimo Hoax and Trophy Wife, but Videosphere is the first time he’s fully articulated his own vision of electronic music, aside from one limited lathe-cut 12”, 2018’s Prime Mover EP, on Algebra. The lush ambient-disco-techno dreams of Videosphere were constructed and completed in his London studio and at his parents’ arable and sheep farm in Worcestershire, which might help explain the hazy, unhurried pastoralism of the album.

“There was a slight bittersweetness in finishing the record (in Worcestershire) as my parents were in the middle of selling my childhood home,” he sighs, before quipping, “on the plus, I ended up shearing a lot of sheep over the summer.” A student of archaeology and ancient history, Turner is no doubt carefully attuned to the twisting cogs of history and memory, and it’s no surprise that Videosphere has a nostalgic, melancholic cast; much of its beauty rests in the way it tugs, gently, at the heart strings – see the tear-stained cheeks of the lush, dappled “Honeycomb”, or the sweetly sad electro-roundelay of “No Way Back Forever.”

It’s not all drift-dream hypnosis, though – Videosphere is very much grounded in the now. ““No Way Back Forever” is a nod to the linear nature of time,” Turner explains by way of example, “and the tipping point of the world climate crisis that scientists have now declared.” Jayne Powell’s vocals are sent spinning through the song, wound like candyfloss; she takes centre stage on the techno hymnal title track, too. Throughout, there’s a sense of forward movement, despite the life stasis we find ourselves collectively bound by in mid-2020; there’s also a yearning for the communal, for community, that’s captured in the album title, a nod to an object Turner encountered at London’s Geoffrey Museum, “a television set in the shape of a spaceman’s helmet from the 1970s.”

“The vision I loosely had was to make an electronic record that had a communal warmth and almost ceremonial or ritual feel. I wanted to examine the relationship of our archaic minds in the trappings of the modern world,” Turner concludes. “What the Videosphere also symbolizes for me is the oneness of humanity and community, prevailing.”

Lake Turner - Outland

The solo output of Reykjavik producer Janus Rasmussen can be best understood as a distillation of his many diverse collaborations to date. Originally from the Faroe Islands, Janus has spent the better part of the last decade creating, performing, and innovating with other artists across myriad musical genres, amassing a wealth of experience and inspiration that he now condenses into his own brand of experimental electronic music. 

Janus’s debut solo album Vín, saw him hone his minimal techno chops into an hour-long exploration of acoustic textures and electronic sound design that peaks and lulls like a well-crafted DJ set. In his most recent work, he meshes Vín’s dancefloor rhythms and dark sonic palette with his own vocals to craft a unique, melodic sound that runs counter to the prevailing current of electronic dance music.

Aside from his own music, Janus performs alongside Ólafur Arnalds as one half of KIASMOS.
