“Horizontal Drift”

Titling my paintings is often a challenge - especially if the painting is non-figurative and I have made no conscious allusions to objects or events outside of the painting (in other words, the painting has no illustrational content).


Consider the case of my painting titled “Horizontal Drift”: though the title is intriguing and a careful examination of its design reveals several horizontal bands of varying definition, I no longer recall why I chose to use the words horizontal and drift in the title. I have used the word “drift” in the title’s of other works (“Asian Drift”, for instance).


A title’s primary function is to identify the painting for inventory and accounting purposes. A number would probably work just as well although words can be useful in giving a hint as to the artist’s intentions. I prefer not to dictate too much meaning, letting the viewers find their own.


What could the word “drift” possibly mean in the title of this non-figurative painting? I consulted my dictionary and found a few exciting possibilities but I have decided to live with not knowing, exactly, and letting my imagination do what it will.

Horizontal Drift

Een afstudeerportret van Zuid Soedanese journalist, activist en onderwijzer Christopher Opoka. 
Gemaakt in het kader van mijn afstuderen aan de Fontys Hogeschool voor Journalistiek te Tilburg.

"Het is rond half vijf in de middag als de deuren op de krantenredactie van de Nation Mirror luid openslaan. We schrijven 3 februari 2014 in Juba, de hoofdstad van Zuid Soedan.
Leden van de National Security Service stormen de redactievloer op, om vervolgens op zoek te gaan naar de plek waar de kranten van die dag gedrukt worden.

Een half uur later wordt de gehele geprinte oplage in beslag genomen. Uren daarna moet hoofdredacteur Wol Deng Atak verschijnen op het hoofdkantoor van de veiligheidsdienst. Zijn krant wordt definitief een halt toe geroepen en de persen moeten voorgoed stoppen.
De reden: het nieuwsblad maakt zich schuldig aan ‘het publiceren van anti-overheid-artikelen’.

Het is slechts een van de uitingsvormen van de overheid om kritiek op het regime in de kiem te smoren. Journalisten die proberen corruptie of het schenden van mensenrechten aan de kaak te stellen, moeten vervolgens vrezen voor hun leven.

Waar de minister van informatie aangeeft dat er ‘absolute vrijheid van pers en media’ heerst in het land, geven de cijfers een heel ander beeld. Sinds Zuid-Soedan onafhankelijk werd in 2011 zijn tien journalisten gedood tijdens het uitoefenen van hun beroep.
In de jaarlijkse persvrijheid-index van Reporters Without Borders scoort het land met een 145ste plaats ronduit slecht.

Journalisten komen na een werkdag soms thuis met gekneusde ribben en sommigen van hen worden kaalgeschoren langs de kant van de weg achtergelaten.

Een van die opgejaagde, in elkaar geslagen en bedreigde journalisten verblijft inmiddels in Nederland en heet Christopher Opoka. Hij zet zich nu op een afstand in voor de situatie in zijn land, voor persvrijheid en het vrije woord.

I hesitated to post this episode. Partly because if you judge me based on this episode alone, you'd have a very skewed idea of who I am. 

I get really personal, give you an inside look at the real thoughts that swirled around in my head. I expose my weaknesses, share my personal struggle with my own self-limiting beliefs. 

The bad and the ugly that people don't see through the smile that's usually on my face.
