The University of California defines a first-generation college student as “a student where neither parent nor guardian have earned a four-year college degree.” At UC Irvine, Institutional Research, Assessment, and Planning updated its student head count data on Oct. 24 to include fall of 2025, and according to the enrollment dashboard, 11,104 out of 30,260 (36.7 percent) undergraduates have first-generation status. The latest four-year graduation rate for first-gen students at UC Irvine is 72.8 percent, and the six-year graduation rate is 83.8 percent.

We’re shining the spotlight on first-gen students in this episode of The UC Irvine Podcast. Our guest is Scott Lerner, a lecturer in the School of Humanities’ composition program. Once a first-gen student himself, he commits extensive time and energy to that population on campus, teaching classes with their experiences as the primary theme and helping lead initiatives to increase first-gen visibility. These efforts include a freshman seminar exploring the hidden curriculum and a website of resources and contacts. Lerner shares stories of tribulation and triumph from his first-gen journey, explains how he structures courses to help students tell their own tales, and muses about changes that could further enhance everyone’s capabilities to succeed.

The composition Sons circulantes is based on field recordings from the Sound Map Portugal, which is part of a project about the unique and fascinating sounds of Portuguese windmills. 
The use of wind energy as a natural, sustainable technology has a long tradition in Portugal. About 3000 windmills were still in operation and played an important role in the agriculturally orientated economy of the country in the mid-1960s. Structural changes within the economy, the dominance of new round-the-clock productivity-orientated technologies and urbanisation trends of the post-WWII society have ever since contributed to a further decline both in terms of number as well as the state of the remaining windmills. However, a new level of awareness regarding their cultural importance and the necessity for preservation emerged from this loss. 
Windmills are objects of cultural heritage and as such are not only put under protection but also, in order to escape the fate of becoming a pure monument of the past times, their presence and visibility call for new, responsible yet challenging concepts and a constant rethinking of relationships between the past and present. Only by reflecting upon this from different perspectives, a necessary amount of ideas and diverse approaches can collect over time and generate further cultural values. 
In addition to their functional purpose, rotating windmill blades produce sound. Their audible aesthetic peculiarity consists first of all of the spatial sound resulting from the interaction of the pure wind with the surface of the blades in the landscape. In addition, numerous Portuguese windmills in the southwestern coastal strip are equipped with approximately 50 resonating bodies, tuned to different frequencies, which are mounted on the windmill blades of each such windmill. There are different types of sound vessels: “buzios” (buzzers), “canudas” (double flutes) and “jarras” (vases), made of clay jars, conch shells, reeds, cane, or tin cans. 
The Sound Art project Circulating Sounds focuses on the sonic aspects of these mills in order to research and document changing, rotating sounds in the landscape and urban context. 
It will foster contacting owners of windmills interested in a dialogue of art and culture on the topic of soundscapes with the aim of raising awareness for sound phenomena in nature and society as well as sound art as a multidimensional spatial and temporal art form. 
The sound map is part of the project Circulating Sounds. As an attempt to create an audible memorial, it is like an archive, a data base for the public. Furthermore, it will provide a valuable foundation for further artistic and scientific research and the production of cultural content (e.g. for strengthening rural areas). 
Technically, a sound map is a digital interface that embeds a variety of audio recordings into a kind of audible geographical structure. This is how the sound map works: as soon as the user clicks on a symbol on the interactive map of Portugal, they will hear immediately the corresponding location-specific sound of a windmill (sonic-windmills-portugal.com).
The Universidade Lusófona will open together with the sound artist Jutta Ravenna (Berlin), the initiator of the project, a dialogue of art and culture between Portuguese artists, local festivals, cultural organisations, and owners of windmills interested in the topic of soundscapes with the aim of raising awareness for sound phenomena in nature and society as well as sound art as a multidimensional spatial and temporal art form.

A piece featuring electric guitar, recorded via line input with additional stereo close mic'ing for added intimacy. Inspiration was drawn from The Last of Us, Death Stranding, and Clair Obscur. An intimate guitar solo opens the track as orchestral, synth, and hybrid sound design elements simmer alongside it, culminating in a huge orchestral climax featuring solo cello and viola. All percussion sounds were sampled and designed from audio recordings of industrial soundscapes.

This track blends ambient textures with narrative lyricism, channeling themes of love, loss, hunger, and cosmic inevitability. It’s a story of light stolen, fire reborn, and a nova that flares across the void—only to repeat again.

Intro:) Lady ElectroTrek is an artist of varying fields... who doesn't feel like she can be crammed into one genre. She creates where she feels the spirit of the moment takes her.../' Lady ElectroTrek has done live choir performances, even had an experience with TV group performance. ElectroTrek has been on radio, different stations--won an award out of Chicago, & received a radio artist plaque for her efforts. ElectroTrek has won group trophy for best in regional singing. ElectroTrek was asked to be a select member of 8 singers called: "The Pantherettes" as a freshman.
ElectroTrek grew up knowing she had a desire to sing, but never anticipated that she would one day take part in a burgeoning exploration of creativity within the instrumental field.
Electrotrek first learned how to play the flute recorder, while attending a private school & studying under a German teacher. Arthur was her teacher, & later saved her life from freezing to death in the snow, when her stepfather 'conveniently' forgot to pick her up & left her there while he was in another town away from where she was going to school & she was left outside until past 8:00 o'clock at night as a middle school child. No cell phones back then, & no money was given her for in case of emergency. The fact that she has survived many abusive encounters, is indeed a miracle in itself.
ElectroTrek has taken flute classes with a popular YouTube teacher from Utah. She has a Sterling flute imported from Australia.
ElectroTrek studied some guitar underneath an aunt of hers who was a Music Major & a music shop owner. Although she never bought instruments from that aunt's shop, due to her relocating over 1500 miles away.
ElectroTrek took piano lessons with a German piano teacher who was very strict to the point that he would hit her hands with a solid wood ruler that had a metal edge & left her hands stinging. Told her that her homework from school was not as important as the piano & demand her to cut her nails off, though they were only moderately grown out. She later switched to a teacher by the last name of Miller, but that proved to only bore & be drawn out to the point of ridiculousness, & only seemed as if paying for lessons but not allowed to progress became evident of being taken advantage of. She then found solace & understanding under her stepfather's brother's wife's teaching.
From there she began to gather tidbits from reaching out to several high-end Professionals & has expanded on trying many new things.
Her life is a story of working against constant odds & mistreatment & she can hold her head with dignity. She has earned her right to be treated as an equal & not cut in half & projected upon by predatory narcissists. Assertiveness is her right to maintaining her boundaries.
ElectroTrek has been involved in many things outside of music as an altruistic activist & rights advocate...& signed many petitions to prevent cruelty & abuse.
An Indian photographer once nominated Lady ElectroTrek for a Nobel Peace Prize on a public forum for her voluntary commitment & diligent work to protect underage models against human trafficking.

FYI: Answer the Q: :D NO I'm NOT a robot! Robots don't wear expensive perfume, have a social security number, have a driver's license issued to them, & have blue, aqua or green veins. ⁂About love: It is utter nonsense to leave the generalization that if you give love, you get love in return. It is simply NOT true... When I look at abused children who have been entrapped within the confines of circumstances, all the love in the world doesn't STOP the abuser from seeing things in a perspective that will harness his faults he fails to identify.
⁂Some experiments may fail, but if we never tried, then we would not be moved to join on a path of something better...Why should there be shame? ⁂Experience can bring evolutionary changes. (Food for thought:)
⁂FYI: I have to admit I am not trying to find a particular genre niche in my musical endeavors...I'm just wanting to enjoy the expedition of the musical wheels! ;)
