Dynamic UK duo Him_Self_Her are back on the essential Crosstown Rebels with another bumping deep house burner ‘Love You Like I Used To’ once again featuring the distinctive vocal chops of Kieran Fowkes who also appeared on previous Crosstown hit ‘Gone Too Long’ (which spent 11 weeks at the top of the Beatport chart). Featuring a tough and distorted remix from hot property Francesca Lombardo and the driving cosmic force of UK disco darlings Psychemagik on the flip, this is a house track for the peak season of al fresco hands-in-the-air dancefloors.

Claire and Leon aka Him_Self_Her have been producing together since 2012 when they hit it off on a musical level during their formative time on the local house scene in Leicester. All that it took was one studio session to realise the potency of their union and their genre blending productions showcase a range of deep grooves and disco infused techno with a human heart. With their breakthrough release ‘Gone Too Long’ sparking the attention of none other than Pete Tong, he promptly made it his Essential New Tune and support followed from heavyweight DJs such as Jamie Jones. Next releases came on Elite Records and OFF Recordings.

The classically trained, multi-talented Francesca Lombardo is one of the most successful artists of this era on Crosstown Rebels and with several shimmering releases for the label including ‘What To Do’ and the ‘Changes EP’, Francesca has amassed a sizable global following, entranced by her live instrumentation and vocal performances alongside the Rebels at events such as Get Lost and Day Zero, as well as the worlds dance music meccas DC10, fabric and Panorama Bar.

Undoubtedly two of the biggest stars of 2012, Danny McLewin and Tom Coveney aka Psychemagik are partly known for their prolific output of remixes but first appeared on Crosstown Rebels with a killer original release ‘Black Noir Schwarz’ back in March. Avid vinyl collectors and masters of the re-edit, the duo has released an impressive array of highly acclaimed releases as well as highly-lauded compilations, such as the self-released ‘Diabolical Synthetic Fantasia’ and last years superb ‘Magik Sunrise’.

«There Was A Day» détient une ame groovy et aerienne, un titre enivrant et percutant qui sent l’été, oùles synthés résonnent au milieu de percussions minimalistes sur des lignes de basses toutes en rondeur, parsemées de nappes spatiales, avec cette voix féminine dominante ajoutant une indéniable touche mélancolique au morceau. Il réconcilie la ballade et le club, la détente et la fougue, et son refrain aux allures de «tube» finit par persister agréablement dans nos oreilles.

Sovgner ouvre la marche des trois remixes qui composent ce maxi en nous régalant d’entrée avec son style patient et rebondissant à souhait, sur un tempo échauffé de cymbales alléchantes, sans oublier ses mystiques transitions qui révèlent une chute puissante et incisive.
Puis, avec Attari qui se charge de remodeler l’originale façon Electro-Tech avec une redoutable précision, on pénètre dans une atmosphère club aux heures tardives.

With this title, Lecomte de Brégeot is reconciling the ballade and the club, the relaxation and the enthusiasm ; the chorus sounding like one of a hit pleasantly remains in our ears.

Regarding the remixes, Sovnger is pleasing us with his good production level and minimal touch, it reminds us of a Crosstown Rebels release.
Then, Attar! is restructuring the original with his own and effective Deep House vision. KorgBrain goes more Techno, making us feeling dreamy.

True dedication is difficult to find these days, as is motivation when digital media has overthrown old school methods, which makes running a label an even more sinuous mission. Concurrently, the same digital revolution that has thrown off the industry has also made it possible for many projects to come into the spotlight, and many of these have made a spectacular difference. Whether it’s smaller side projects of well known artists, serving up quirkier, more experimental tracks, enabling further sonic exploration, or newborn collectives doling out fresh takes on contemporary sound, 2017 has been a prolific year for record labels.
But it’s not just the approach related to creating and promoting labels that has shifted recently. In recent times, the way we make and consume music has transformed as well. Moving at its own pace, ten years in the world of dance music come as a century in real life, as dancefloor trends fluctuate. In such a surrounding, creating timeless pieces is essential when maintaining a high calibre establishment. But thanks to platforms such as Soundcloud or the ever-pervasive social media channels, it’s easy to showcase tracks and kick off labels without needing the once coveted record deal. Nevertheless, record labels serve as beacons in a world where we’re inundated by more and more content.
More than just a release platform, labels are indispensable partners in artists’ careers as the one to curate only the best music, accompany it with according designs, as well as bringing in new marketing ideas or even music videos. Shir Khan’s Exploited label has been a true example of such a label, hand-picking new producers to showcase, nurturing them from early beginnings into popular household names.
