Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for THE BLUE PENDANT

With director Diego Ramirez’s active love for the orchestra and its history in film music, it’s no surprise that the score for his film The Blue Pendant ended up following in suit. In order to fill the musical shoes of this task, composer Jarryd Elias utilizes the combination of a string quartet along with a plethora of other pitched and unpitched percussion sounds to support and bring out the emotion of the story that unfolds.  As the film twists and turns, the score artfully keeps the ears and the minds rooted in the story, employing every technique and sound available to create a rich, luscious, and carefully crafted score.

Film Logline: When a young man arrives at a deceased friend's house to return a pendant of hers, he soon discovers the daunting secret behind it.

In the realm of horror film scoring, music plays a pivotal role alongside visuals.  Composer Jarryd Elias, in his work on director Rem Scobell's Beverly Hills Exorcist, not only meets but surpasses expectations, crafting an orchestral score that immerses the audience in the heart of cinematic terror.

From the very first notes of "Another Extraction," Elias masterfully blends eerie-yet-active textures with haunting melodies, setting a foreboding tone for the unfolding action with a gruesome demon (Eileen Dietz).  His versatility shines as he seamlessly transitions from the ominous demon theme and intense action scoring in tracks like "Uncovering the Demon" and "Losing the Team" to lighter, comedic compositions, deftly capturing the film's shifting tones in "Removal of the Phantasm" and "It's Not Your House Anymore."  The love theme connecting Sonya (Amanda McCants) and Sebastian (Ryan Kendrick), beautifully portrayed in "Sonya & The Spirit Communicator," adds emotional depth, while an epic and energizing end credits sequence, titled "Sonya's Theme / End Credits," provides a powerful finale.

What distinguishes this soundtrack is its storytelling prowess.  Each track unfolds like a chapter in a musical journey that mirrors the film's twists and turns. Presenting the World Premiere of “Gridiron Glory,” a new work for Brass Ensemble and Percussion!  Thank you to the Los Angeles Brass Alliance for the opportunity to write an original work for your ensemble, as well as to conduct the premiere.  I had a fantastic time working with you all, and I can’t wait to do it again… hopefully soon!

PERFORMANCE NOTES:

Upon discovering that I was chosen to be one of the selected composers to write an original work for the Los Angeles Brass Alliance’s 2024 “Next Up” Concert, I immediately knew that I wanted to write something big, fun, bold, and powerful for this group of exciting and talented musicians.  At this same time, both the NFL the NCAA football seasons were at their midway point, so it was easy for me to find inspiration in the excitement that comes from being a fan of both the Detroit Lions and the Michigan Wolverines.

Musically, “Gridiron Glory” reflects the emotions of the competitive game of football.  The piece begins with an exciting introduction, followed by initial statements of the theme.  A small interlude and development comes halfway through, kicked off by a Timpani solo.  We then revisit the opening material, followed by more powerful renditions of the main theme, culminating in an epic finish.  One might equate each portion of the piece to a football game!  

From a technical perspective, the writing of “Gridiron Glory” necessitates for the performers to have both power and agility, much like the athletes that play football.

I want to again thank LAB-A for the opportunity to write a piece for their 2024 “Next Up” concert, and I look forward to working with them again in the future.  Good game, everyone!

Gridiron Glory (Fanfare for Brass Ensemble, Piano, & Percussion)

This is my first composition using electronic music and percussion.  In the process of composing this piece, many superhero films were being featured in theaters, and this composition is mainly inspired by the concept of these heroes' journeys.  The piece, at times, sounds like the soundtrack for one of these movies, and the idea in the piece is to be able to convey the emotional weigh that these characters carry. 'With great power, comes great responsibility.'

Hero's Journey (2014) - Timpani Solo with Electronics

Catching Shadows (2013) is a mallet and percussion sextet commissioned by Michael Burritt and the Eastman School of Music percussion studio. The work’s instrumentation includes one 5.0 marimba, one 4.3 marimba, two vibraphones, and two percussion parts. The middle section of the piece also includes optional vocal parts for the players to sing.

Michael Burritt and I have become good friends and collaborators over the years, and on a recent road trip to a gig, he said, “I’m in charge of the tunes!” Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect! He plugged in his iPod, and the first thing to play: Radiohead, then Dave Matthews, then Earth, Wind & Fire. That’s when I discovered something cool about Mike: he’s as much a rock musician as classical musician. It just so happens he plays marimba. Sometimes, I feel the same way. I thought about our road trip and decided to write a rock tune inspired by Mike’s playlist.

This piece was premiered at Eastman in October of 2013, as well as at the 2013 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in November by Eastman’s Percussion Studio’s class of 2015. This piece I feel is the heart and soul of my senior class that I have become to love as my brothers and sisters: to whom the performance of this piece is dedicated to. To Emily, Max, Sam, Sacha, and Sean: We’ve been through so much, and it all went by so fast, so let’s make this last month and a half a good one. I will never forget you guys. Ever.
