How I Really Feel

Angor is a Welsh song I wrote in June 2028. I spent the month as an artist in residence in a little caravan (The CARNafan) just outside the castle walls of Caernarfon, North Wales. My time here involved inviting people to come into the space and tell me a story; I would then turn these stories into folk songs. It was an incredibly inspiring time for me and a very productive month. I wrote, recorded and printed a limited edition physical EP (which can also be purchased at cegrecords.com/eve-goodman. Angor is a the story of a woman who has lived all her life on the safety of dry land, protected by mountains. Now she is being beckoned by the sea and her watery depths, with promises of new inspiration and a surrendering to the unknown. The unknown is not pretty, but it is beautiful, and it is necessary for her to go there.

Wave Upon Wave

Angor

Wave Upon Wave is the title track of the EP, which is a collection of songs about the sea and the healing power of water.

I wrote the vocal parts in one sitting, and never changed them. In fact, the entire vocal recording is the original demo that I created when trying out ideas late one night. I started off with the simple lilting melody of 'wave upon wave upon wave', and loved the way the structure of this sentence means it could go on infinitely. This idea of infinity sparked the next line, 'day upon day upon day'. The sea is vast, infinite, timeless.

The song grew from there really, like a wave rolling towards the shore, building strength and power and beauty. I wanted the different vocal parts that come in to lap and swell like waves, articulating the essence of being moved deeply by the sea.

Luke did a beautiful job of building a soundscape for the vocals to float on. I particularly love the autoharp. The sounds of the strings as they are played sound like the gentle pull and creaks of the mast, and it feels like you're on a boat.

This is a song about the natural world, and the words we use to describe it. During a co-writing session one summer, Sera and I used a Welsh book about birds and trees to inspire us as we spent the day writing. We noticed that lots of the Welsh words for tree and bird species were unknown to us, despite knowing the words in English. We set to singing the words back to life in our mind, partly to help us remember them in the future, but also because they were so beautiful.  Many of the Welsh words held hidden treasures and revealed secrets about that which we were describing, in a way that wasn’t so common in English. For example, a Jay in Welsh is ‘Sgrech Y Coed’, which translates as ‘Screech of the Woods’. A Chrysanthemum in Welsh is ‘Ffarwel yr Haf’, which means ‘Summer’s Farewell’. The poetry and the song was right there for us already. We wrote a song about what is hiding between the trees, in the dark, that must not be forgotten. It was beautiful to forage for these new words that we didn’t use in our everyday Welsh. Learning them, and getting to know them so that we could use them and teach them to others felt so important. So much knowledge and culture and wisdom is held in a language. The song is about protecting language, but also about protecting our wildlife. 

We were very inspired by The Lost Words, written by Robert McFarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris, who responded to the omission of 100s of nature words in a recent edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Roedd y farddoniaeth yn y geiriau yn glir i ni. Fe ysgrifennon ni gân am yr hyn sy'n cuddio rhwng y coed, yn y tywyllwch, na ddylid ei anghofio. Roedd yn hyfryd chwilota am y geiriau newydd hyn. Mae eu dysgu, a'u cael i'w hadnabod mor bwysig. Mae cymaint o wybodaeth a diwylliant a doethineb yn cael ei ddal mewn iaith. Mae'r gân yn ymwneud ag amddiffyn iaith, ond hefyd am amddiffyn ein bywyd gwyllt.
