Tel Aviv’s Red Axes are one of the most exciting new acts in dance music, with rich sound that is musical, deep, trippy and organic, while remaining precise and lethally effective in the club. The range in their sound is impressive, their talent unmistakeable. They are one of our favourite artists of the year, and this latest record is one of their best yet.

Lead track 'Waiting for a Surprise’ builds around a mid-tempo disco bassline, with tough percussion, and rugged synth stabs, but it’s the eerie and unique sounding vocals of Brazilian collaborator Abrao that bring everything together. This one is a guaranteed bomb for building up, tearing down, peak time or chilling out… an outstanding track in every sense, the kind that force trainspotters to the DJ booth to discover what’s playing. Next up, ‘Hope’ kicks off with resonant, delayed toms, adding a haunting howl and synths before dropping into a wild, clanging, carnivalesque frenzy. It’s understated, but advanced, with an interesting arrangement that really opens up in the second half. Finally, 'The Metal Bender’ slows the tempo but ups the vibe into an elated, slow-burning space-disco anthem. Fantastic stuff!

Melbourne’s Kris Baha, fresh from launching his Power Station imprint, offers a stripped down remix of ‘Waiting for a Surprise,’ with a heavy, industrial-influenced groove that wanders into the deep, dark end of party strasse.

This land is your land, This land is my land

Though it has often been co-opted as a benignly patriotic campfire sing-a-long, "This Land Is Your Land" was actually written by Woody Guthrie in 1944 as a subversive protest song in biting response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." At my sister Samra's urging, we recorded our version in 2004, during the George W. Bush presidency, in an effort to re-establish it as a song about social justice.

Ironically, when Woodie Guthrie resided in Coney Island in 1950, his landlord was none other than Donald Trump's father, the infamously racist real estate mogul Fred Trump, about whom Guthrie composed his poem "Old Man Trump," including the lines:

     I suppose that Old Man Trump knows just how much racial hate
     He stirred up in that bloodpot of human hearts
     When he drawed that color line
     Here at his Beach Haven family project 

Using a dark re-harmonization of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" as an intro, the Dap-Kings re-arranged "This Land" as a rough blues-y march, setting the tone for Sharon to tear into the lyrics of the song with the fiery gusto of a revolutionary. However, it was the inclusion of Guthrie's rarely-heard original verses that really enabled Sharon to reclaim the song as an urgent and unambiguous demand for equality and human dignity in a nation rife with social injustice and patriotic hypocrisy.

Today, as we inaugurate a rapacious billionaire to the highest office in the land, those original verses resonate with us as loudly as the day they were written:

     There was a big high wall there
     That tried to stop me
     The sign was painted
     Said 'Private Property'
     But on the backside
     It didn't say nothing
     This land was made for you and me

     One bright sunny morning
     In the shadow of the steeple 
     By the relief office 
     I saw my people 
     As they stood hungry
     I stood there wondering 
     If God Blessed America for me

We are grateful to Woodie Guthrie and to Sharon Jones, two friends of the people and bitter foes of the Trumps, who have given us an essential soundtrack to our struggle. When times get dark, let us not crumble in fear and bigotry. Let us honor the unbreakable spirit of those tireless fighters who have fallen before us. Let us rise to the fight, and let us help each other never to forget this noble truth:

Supported by instrumental waves of adherence to the underlying moral code of the presumptive listener by providing aid to bring metaphoric evaluation into clearer view. Many years in the making, this beast groomed itself bringing out only its best previously tailored outfits gathered over many years to build into one idea with many tiers and drawn from both camps those being Soom T’s opinionated activist hip hop, jazz underpinnings coupled perfectly by politically charged electronic experimentation wizard ‘Monkey Marc‘ the far reaching producer from Australia’s Omelette Records and Elephant Traks label of politico activist stalwarts “Combat Wombat.“

Each instrumental provides the backdrop embellishing the gush of ideas leaning into epicurean drama when the mood brings it.  Monkey Marc pieced the entire collection together from a solar panel powered shipping container and for that salutations are due.  The bullets from this Babylon induced homage to truth is able to carry the listener on a deep emotional journey which demands that they question reality and turn up the bass as the creation of it demanded.
