Winter in Salem

This character from ancient myth is complex - is he stubborn, unaware, defiant, defeated?
Is he the modern anti-hero? The person who keeps going, no matter what  . . ?

10  Sisyphus

Etude with sixths in both hands. 
I envisioned a serene starry sky as I wrote the opening. After the introduction appears the first theme section, which consists of repeating cycles of a singular melody that seems to be trying to erupt through. The piece finally comes to a breaking point, after which the tension gradually resides, wavering between keys of D and A major. (I was working on this piece at the time when I was about to give birth, which could have influenced how it turned out.) 両手が６度の音程で動く曲。出だしは穏やかな星空を想像して書いた。その後で現れるのは、噴火しそうなエネルギーで何度も繰り返される旋律。そしてそれはニ長調とイ長調の間を行ったり来たりしながら極限点まで昇りつめる。（出産直前に書いていた曲なので、それが内容に影響を及ぼしたかもしれない）

Epimetheus ("the too late thinking, recognizing") took Pandora to wife despite the warnings of his brother Prometheus ("the thinking ahead"). When he opened the box held out to him by Pandora, evil and suffering came upon mankind, only hope remained in the vessel.

Whoever finds the box, "Keep the lid CLOSED!!!"
(Edited) Memo: better DO open the box, because now there is only hope in it....

Note: Hephaestus is to blame. Who brought him the clay from which he created Pandora at the behest of Zeus?

Epimetheus („der zu spät Bedenkende, Erkennende“) nahm Pandora trotz der Warnungen seines Bruders Prometheus („der Vorausdenkende“) zur Frau. Als er die ihm von Pandora hingehaltene Büchse öffnete, kamen Übel und Leid über die Menschheit, nur die Hoffnung blieb in dem Gefäß zurück.

Wer auch immer die Box findet, lasst AUF JEDEN FALL den Deckel darauf!

Anmerkung: Hephaistos ist schuld. Wer nur hat ihm bloß den Lehm gebracht, aus der er Pandora auf geheiß Zeus erschaffen hat?

When I was little, my parents divorced and we moved with my mother to the other side of the world. My parents always stayed on good terms, and we could call and write, so it wasn't like he had died or anything - but suddenly our father was just... gone from our everyday world. Over the decades, we have been able to catch up every couple of years or so, but parting each time always feels like losing him all over again, and no matter how old I get, that little girl inside me rises to the surface, re-living the confusion, hurt and loss. 

A few years ago, my father showed me a poem that little girl had written and sent to him during those first few years apart:
"I miss you like the pages of a book
I miss you like the shadow of a lion
I miss you like a bird up a flyin'
But when I think of you the sun shines through my tears"
