The Spell

Mysterious supergroup Protect Ryan (@protectryan) make their HOMAGE debut with the 'Self-proclaimed Critically Acclaimed' EP, featuring four original rave bangers paired with remixes from five of the scene's most trusted underground producers.

Protect Ryan unites three friends (all veteran producers) that first came together through their shared love of '90s rave culture. Their debut EP arrived on DJ Die's GutterFunk label and introduced the world to their distinct ethos, producing club-ready cuts that inject the dancefloor with big energy. Now they expand on their story with the purest form of their dynamic sound, the 'Self-proclaimed Critically Acclaimed' EP on HOMAGE.

Leading off with 'Bro Magnum', Protect Ryan launch into an all-out assault of banging breakbeats and growling bass before a squelching acid line takes over. Then comes 'Liam Features', a track also forthcoming on TSHA's fabric presents compilation, which follows with more rouged rhythms paired with playful stabs transporting listeners back to the golden age of rave. Next is 'Senhor Whep' and its nostalgic drum breaks that lay the foundation for an absolutely naughty acid line building into peak time euphoria. Finally, rounding out the Protect Ryan originals is 'Unfinished BTEC' delivering the trio's most refined sound, with tight percussion and chopped vocals stacked on top of a smooth, deep, and emotive bass line.

While the originals are enough to satisfy anyone's thirst for rave-ready anthems, the release is complete with a staggering collection of remixes. Building on the energy that was already laid out, Apparition (@apparition-noise) speeds up the bpm with their version of 'Bro Magnum' for a hyper bass banger. Then Club Glow's own Denham Audio (@denhamaudio) takes on 'Liam Features' with his signature breakbeat NRG before Boulderhead (@boulderheaduk) flips the same track into a bumping house cut highlighting the original's infectious bassline. Finishing off the release are two remixes of 'Unfinished BTEC', first by HOMAGE label co-founder Ryan Clover (@ryanclover) who's hard-hitting version highlights the deep squelchy bass and chopped percussion while Davis Galvin (@davisgalvin) delivers a sublime and ethereal downtempo chugger.

Showcasing the breadth and depth of the current EBM/dark disco scene Curses' new compilation, Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX, runs the gamut from punishing industrial to techno through to post-punk experiments and romantic gothic electro-pop. It's in the latter two categories that Fat Cat Records' Jennifer Touch falls into with her exclusive contribution, Altars, an atmospheric new wave pop song where electro rhythms collide with desolate, windswept synths and Touch's yearning vocals to haunting effect.

Perched on a crossroads, Pin Up Club approaches electronic music with a magpie’s nature. A spread of styles has been picked, plucked and plundered to make ‘Friends Of The Vortex’. The title piece snaps with clean beats as Blade Runner bars build with an energy that can only be described as palpable. Latin percussion and samples get the groove going for ‘Children Of The Void’. Flirting, the tone twirls and turns. Keys are big and full bodied, balanced perfectly by the crack of a snare. ‘Out Of The Unknown’ closes. A slow burning piece brimming with brooding cinematic shapes and strings, a work that shows the colder edge of this dutch duo. Quality through and through.

L’Avenir is the dark synth project of veteran electronic musician and sound artist Jason Sloan. Known throughout the space and ambient music scenes for his contemplative electronic soundscape work for close to two decades; Sloan founded L’Avenir in 2011 to explore his long time love of dark synth and minimal wave music created purely from analog and vintage equipment.

While releasing over a dozen solo solo electronic ambient albums and E.P.’s under his own name, Sloan has played solo all over the US, Canada and Europe including the influential Live Constructions radio program at Columbia University, STEIM in Amsterdam and Philadelphia’s The Gatherings concert series, one of the country’s oldest continuing ambient and electronic music series.

Sloan is a Professor and Chair of the Interactive Arts department along with being the founder and director of the Sound Art program at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.
