Have I Told You

German electro producer Martin Matiske has recently breathed new life into his Blackploid alias. The project’s revival continues to bear fruit with the Strange Stars EP, Matiske’s third Blackploid release of 2021 and second for Central Processing Unit after issuing March’s Cosmic Traveler EP through the Sheffield label.
Blackploid’s two CPU drops have more in common than just stargazing titles. Those who enjoyed Cosmic Traveler will find plenty to like again in these four tracks, with Matiske serving up another quartet of snappy machine-funk joints this time around. However, while there is certainly a throughline between Cosmic Traveler and Strange Stars, this EP also finds Blackploid pushing the envelope at points by taking risks with his synth tones which thrill and enliven the record.
In keeping with the cosmic theme of Blackploid’s recent output, Strange Stars kicks off with ‘Star Patrol’. While this opening cut is full of the same needle-gun basslines and dinky synths that characterised Cosmic Traveler, the drum programming eschews the broken beats favoured by many in the scene for a straight house/techno snap. It makes for a very groovy jam, one with Drexciya, Computer World-era Kraftwerk and a pinch of Space Dimension Controller in its mix.
Indeed, the only track on Strange Stars which skips along on a broken beat is second entry ‘The Signal’. ‘The Signal’ also features some of Blackploid’s most impressive electronics programming to date, announcing itself with a brilliantly unusual synth that sounds like an old video game unit which has just gained sentience. When this alien tone is combined with another precision-engineered bassline the track invokes the grizzly bangers of the L.I.E.S. label, though the keyboard stabs which enter periodically also hint to the funkier electro of, say, Egyptian Lover.
‘The Unseen’, the first B-side of Strange Stars, finds Blackploid bringing together many of the things which made the two previous tunes such standouts. A steady four-on-the-floor and a slightly haunted feel to the synth choices casts back to ‘Star Patrol’, but much like ‘The Signal’ this joint also features some rather weird tones which are a hair’s breadth away from machine malfunction. It’s a feeling which runs through to closing cut ‘Light Corridor’, a number where melodies and anti-melodies zip around an array of gurgling electronic cells.
Martin Matiske’s fine run of Blackploid EPs continues with the intergalactic electro stylings of Strange Stars.

After landing on a new field ,he goes out of the submarine like if it was the first time and see this blinding and power full light on a desert landscape...
But after spending all this time in the darkness of the nautilus,he cannot stand this light and finally goes to the underground of a basement city, where all the survivors are joined together

MINDFRAME 011: ADJ + CYBEREIGN [LIVE]

2022 has unarguably been a great year for Electro both with overall visibility for the genre as well as with the sheer number of quality releases being put out over the course of the year. This was also a year in which I took a break from my show and handed DJing responsibilities over to DJ friends from around the world. Couldn't be happier with how the year turned out for the show. I feel like It was a busy year both production-wise and promotion-wise for @DVSNME and @DarkScienceElectro respectively, however, I found some time to put together a mix of my favorite 22 tracks from 2022. Following amazing releases on Last Known Trajectory and New Flesh, Jauzas The Shining returns to us here at Shipwrec with a work of sheer quality. Known primarily as a purveyor of electro, the Frenchman has poked and prodded the expected parameters of the sound for ”Digital Sensation.” Delicate sweeps are shouldered by walls of distortion and a cutting snare in “Digital Sensation.” Eerie and unsettling in one breath, absorbingly close in the next, the opener melts emotive notes with rasping rhythms to produce a daring piece of audio futurism. A slender beat introduces “Intellectual Capacity.” From this shallow foundation grows a track of parred down complexity. Bold keys stab through garbled samples and hi-hats as a distant groove unfurls in the most unexpected way. “Sentinel” is a different beast. Cinematic in its composition, broad bars sail above piercing percussion for a work that balances light and dark tones perfectly. The curtain fall comes in the shape of “The Vision of the Trance.” Beats echo and judder against a bulwark of static for this arcing finale, the decaying bleep of circling satellites orbiting a machine inhabited world below.

With just a handful of releases on labels such as Solar One, Shipwrec, and Brokntoys, Luxus Varta has fast established himself as one of the most unique sounding producers in the field of electro music, an artist whose tracks stand miles apart from common genre tropes. A frequent collaborator of Detroit Grand Pubahs, Luxus Varta is by no means a stranger to dancefloor functionality, yet his music runs deeper, baring its electronic soul through intricate songwriting and immaculate sound design. 
“Colder” is a homage to human solitude, a reflection on the breakdown of human relationships, when callousness takes over from emotion, and physical contact becomes but a perfunctory exercise. Luxus Varta translates these feelings into five tracks that contrast harshness with beauty, distance with immediacy. From bass-propelled opener “Flash Tension” to melancholic finale “Invisible”, complex melodies and translucent synths are set against a background of abrasive noises, bitcrushed effects, and Luxus Varta’s unmistakably inventive beat making. 
“Colder” is Luxus Varta’s first release for the TRUST label, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The 12” version ships in transparent vinyl with sleeves designed by dextro.org.

All tracks written and performed live by Cyphon and Obzerv using two Elektron Digitakts, one Elektron Digitone and a MAM MB33 running through an old Boss delay box. The set is comprised entirely of unreleased and original music.

Cyphon and Obzerv are a pair of 21 and 22-year-old producers from London, who have collaborated since high school. Having experimented with a few different genres – after discovering Electro they found the sound they wanted to specialize in crafting. Through their music they express their experience of growing up in the Age of the Internet, taking inspiration from science fiction stories and global current affairs alike. 

Over the past year they have broadcast live worldwide on Threads Radio and taken their act to club dance-floors, where they have supported Radioactive Man and Afrodeutsche. Cyphon recently released his debut single ‘Red Zone’ on audiovisual label Patchbay Records, and a debut back-to-back EP from the pair is forthcoming on independent vinyl imprint Gunfinger Food.
