Tambores En Benirras is the alias of Graham Newby AKA 'DJ Gripper'. A month after the release of his debut album as Tambores En Benirras, 2021’s fabulous Orbe Dotodo, Graham Newby’s life changed forever. After years of living with a visual impairment, his sight had deteriorated so much that he was declared “registered blind”. For a man who had spent decades dividing his time between travelling, DJing, running clubs and lengthy sessions in his studio, it was a genuinely life-changing moment.

It was against this backdrop, and the need to alter his working methods that Ondas Horizontales, the second Tambores En Benirras album, took shape. Inspired by a mixture of daydreaming, visualisation, immersion in other people’s music (escapism that provided mood enhancement rather than a specific set of ideas) and long periods spent soaking up the sun in Ibiza, the album is the most vividly detailed, sonically colourful, and sun-soaked collection that Newby has released to date.

Newby’s declining sight forced him to stop spending long spells staring at a screen, undoubtedly slowing the production process. Yet it also allowed him to reconnect with his emotions, appreciate the storytelling and mood-shifting potential of music, and mine mind’s eye memories of places and spaces that have meant much to him over the years.

This week's sunset session is coming straight from the source and one of the resident DJ at Hostal la Torre in Ibiza, a fantastic selector and one of my personal fav Phat Phil Cooper.

For over two decades, you could find Phat Phil Cooper DJing at places like Amnesia in Ibiza, Cream in Liverpool and Ministry of Sound in London all the way to Base in Sao Paulo and Shelter in Shanghai. 
Through his work as a DJ, label manager, curator, record shop owner, event organizer, and music consultant, Cooper has remained a central figure in a story that has yet to conclude.

Phil’s never been one to stick to any one genre and he’s got a reputation for having an insatiable appetite when it comes to scavenging for music, which makes him well suited for the island’s many flavours. Whether it be a soothing, seductive, sundown set packed with sun soaked funk & soul, jazz, Africa and latin rhythms, lazy beats, and deep disco or an organic, techno-infused sunrise set, it’s always a masterclass in his mélange of musical knowledge.

Away from the dancefloor, Cooper has spent much of the last three decades running or working for record labels including NuNorthern Soul Records, Sick Trumpet, KAT and the African Music Corporation. Today’s he’s best known for steering NuNorthern Soul and his other current imprint, Through God’s Own Eyes.
NuNorthern Soul has been on a fine run of form in recent times, offering up fine releases from Ilija Rudman, Jose Manuel, Blair French, Private Agenda and a handful of cracking catalog compilations curated by Cooper. As you’d expect the 2020 release schedule is packed, too, with highlights including a new set of reworks of label favourites by Leo Zero, plus singles and albums from Igor B, Torn Sail, BJ Smith and Balearic legend Joan Bibiloni.

Cooper’s most notable success in this regard is the Potato Head Club in Bali; during his time living on the Island, he brought some of Balearic music’s finest DJs and artists to the venue and booked Bali’s first-ever Boiler Room session with Jose Padilla, Daniele Baldelli and his old friends Crazy P.
