When I was living in Boston, I saw Vladimir Horowitz play this Sonata in one of his most remarkable and final concerts at Boston Symphony Hall before he died in 1989. He was well into his 80's. I went back to my teacher and said, "I want to learn that!"  Well I did, many moons ago.  I still have the music with notes.  I don't perform written music any longer (well Chrismas songs, and family favorites), and I can't play any of my old repertoire from memory, but the beautiful melodic theme has stayed with me.  This is my tribute to Scarlatti, a genius composer, ahead of his time, but more than that,  his music has a profound depth of emotion as if it were written today!

Midgard is a Germanic term for the world or the earth. The word has survived in this or a similar meaning as Gothic midjungards, Old Norse miðgarðr, Old English middangeard, Old Saxon middilgard and Old High German mittil(a)gart and was used in both sacred and profane language. Midgard, literally "middle court" or "middle garden", actually means the dwelling place of humans in the middle of the world. The gods (Asen) live in Asgard.

In contrast to the vertical world view of the world tree Yggdrasil, in the Norse imagination Miðgarðr (west) and Útgarðr (east) describe a horizontal, circular world view as two interrelated poles. This corresponds to the settlement structure of the north up to the time of the industrial revolution, in which the farmstead forms the center of the world.

However, the basic word garðr, which in medieval Scandinavia mainly stood for "farmstead", originally meant an enclosure, a border wall or fence, dividing the world into two opposing areas: an inside and an outside. The enclosed inside is the living area of man, where culture is possible under the protection of the gods, while the demons and giants live on the outside.

In Eddic literature, Miðgarðr is therefore not only the world of men, but also that of the gods. Miðgarðr is created by the gods, who build their castle Ásgarðr in it. They then assign Miðgarðr to the first humans Askr and Embla as their dwelling place. However, Miðgarðr is also sometimes used to refer to the wall or fence that protects the human world from the giants.

Our story begins with Jorrit disembarking at Boston Harbor with the ambition to give up life on the sea.
He's a salty ol' dog and it might be a difficult transition but his mission is to make it to the west coast of the United States.
Jorrit has some wild adventures and drunken debauchery in Boston before eventually making his way west into Pennsylvania where he buys a used Conestoga wagon and a team of horses
and sails off into the sunset towards his new life.

Hailing from Vondelingenplaat Netherlands, Jorrit Brouwer, son of a brew master, is frightened of large four legged animals because as a child he was kicked by a drunken donkey.

I try to improve and explore new sounds and rhythms in each song, always in a dark way, without going out of my way to find them. That seems to be my style, although who knows how this will end.
