Nine Things To Know About Nina Jo

1) I’m named after my mom’s mom, Nina and my dad’s sister, Jo. Nina rhymes with China. 

2) My grandfather was the first artist I knew. We used to paint side-by-side in his garage-studio. 

3) My brother was murdered on the last day of 1979, the eve of a new decade. I couldn’t even listen to music for a year. In fact, name any song from the 80s; I probably don’t know it. I stopped playing music for about twenty years and instead earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a master’s in Physical Education, founded The SAFE Place at San Francisco State and taught self-defense to more than a thousand people.

4)  I stole my mom's guitar when I was about nine years of age and taught myself to play by listening to her Joan Baez records.

5) I still have the mud-caked dictionary with pressed flowers in it that flew out the back window of my VW bug when I rolled it driving home from Fairbanks on the AlCan in the Yukon Territory 90 miles from the nearest town.

6) When I was a small child and we could see the Channel Islands, I’d say, “The islands are up!” because I thought they sank out of sight when they weren’t visible. 

7) I rehabilitated myself from a concussion I got on Cinco de Mayo 1995. I couldn’t get medical treatment for it, so I invented my own path, drawing, painting, learning traditional and movement-based storytelling. I started breaking into song during my improvs, so one day my teacher said, “You’re a singer. Sing!” Thanks, Corey Fischer, for helping me find my way back to music.

8) I started playing open mics in San Francisco in the early 2000s. At the time I thought, “Who’s gonna want to listen to a guitar-based singer songwriter these days?” Surprise!

Welcome to my Soundcloud cavalcade of original tunes. Consider it my musical blog, and the entries at the top of the list change sometimes daily. 
For starters, let me say that "Some Reality" is a favorite of people's. You will find it next to last , dig for it. It's a beautiful song which goes over well when I play it live. As far as Pages 1-3 are concerned, I post new and old things, delving into the better part of 50 years. Some are full blown productions and some demos (so much to pick from). I wish I could rearrange the order of the songs sometimes. I have written over 500 songs. Get ready to be surprised by the variety of styles and sounds.
 I hope you explore and find one that hits you in the right place There are notes with info on each track. Included, also, are two new digital singles, "What is done is done" and "Fontella Bass sang"!

My name is Bob Comtois (pronounced, cone-TWA). For years I played mandolin and sang on the streets of Boston and its sister city, Cambridge. Perhaps you were among the few million people who stopped and watched me and my bands play in Harvard Square or by Fanueil Hall. Among you were Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Peter Wolf, and the Impressions. Television, nightclubs, radio and colleges came to us, but it was always the exuberance of the street performances that was so exciting. 
 My bands (i.e.Strings Attached, Hoot Spa, The Risa Benson Band, Public Domain and The Verbs) encountered some wonderful fans and visitors from around the world. They loved to dance to our upbeat sound- unique for its blending of folk-rock and R&amp;B replete with sax, electric mandolin, great harmonies, and fun antics.
 Guest artists such as Bela Fleck and Patty Larkin graced the street and stage with us. We were pretty accessible in the 70’s and 80’s.
 Things are difficult to keep together, band-wise. So, over the years, my home studio became the place where musicians would come as I learned production techniques while I recorded many of my original songs as well as those of my clients. I am very proud of my work with my dear friend, fellow Boston street performer, and soul singer, Gerry Mack. I also have worked with Boy’s Life’s John Surrette, 70’s pop guru, Andy Pratt, and co-produced "Rainy Day Sunshine" by Whistle Jacket.
 "With Relish" is a collection of my songs spanning the 80’s and 90’s. I produced it using Protools along with some original analog masters, and I re-mastered it digitally to a very pleasant effect. 
 The music is eclectic, quirky, rock/pop. The electric mandolin is very chameleon-like, weaving in and out of the multi-textured sounds I tried to convey. Along with electric and acoustic guitars, I play mandocello and electric mandola, besides my punchy, rhythmic acoustic mandolin style. My vocals are certainly distinctive. I hope you like what you hear, as I have albums and albums worth of material ready to be released.

Sheryl and Kerry grew up in San Francisco and started singing together at an early age. Performing in glee clubs, choirs and musical theater. Daughters of performer Eileen Christy ,the summers were spent on the road with their mother watching, learning and performing with some of the best . They were also discovering guitars and folk music. They started performing in their teens as a duo .Their original music combines storytelling , humor and warmth and has been called American Folk Pop.

Just doing what I've been doing since I was 4 years old, but getting a little better at it as the years go by. I live in the SF Bay Area and and looking to expand well beyond the region. 

My first guitar hero was Jimi Hendrix, but it is through his and many others example that I always just follow my own muse and not "trends". You will hear many influences in my music and songs. The lyrical content in my originals is purely from my own journey.  The covers you will hear me perform are always interpreted with respect and passion.

I am blessed to create and perform music with astonishingly great musicians. Some you will only hear for the first time in my track. These relationships fuel me even more to find an audience that has actually been looking for an artist who does just what we do but don't even know it yet! May that be YOU?

Kristina was born on the Micronesian island of Agana, Guam in the little villiage of Oka, Tamuning on November 25th, Thanksgiving day. Born to Johnny Sablan, a 100% native Chamorro of Guam, and Bruni Parello, of half Sicilian, half Lebanese decent. Kristina's father is a singer/songwriter/ producer, and cultural activist of Guam. His years and contributions of keeping the culture of the Island alive through song, are appreciated and respected among the indigenous people of the island and beyond.
Her mother BRUNI, is an Internationally renowned portrait painter and has an immense body of work. She made certain that Kristina had the background in Jazz music by taking her to many shows where Kristina would watch her mother sketch the musicians. She saw and met many of the greats like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Abbey Lincoln, Shirley Horn and many more.
Kristina grew up in a home that upheld a strong respect and discipline for the arts.
"There was much music and laughter in my early years with my parents in Hollywood. They were often entertaining friends at fun gatherings where we would all sit around and sing and play music."
As the years passed, Kristina and her parents moved up to Northern California where Kristina spent most of her childhood and teenage years learning classical piano from her grandmother. Moving on as an adult, singing, writing songs, attending the open mic circuits, and performance, took up much of her time, as well as learning to play the guitar properly. "I felt I needed to hone in on the craft of songwriting that I love so much, and that required studying the great songwriters from every genre."
"I have been very influenced by Jazz and the Bossa Nova music of Brazil, from my mother, mixed with the Island/Country sounds of my fathers music from Guam, throw in a ton of classical composers as well as 70's radio, mix that with R&B Soul, Motown, Classic standards, and you have my background in what I grew up listening to".
