Chris Patterson played bass guitar in the 1980s and, quite frankly, wasn't very good.
Although he did release one quite wonderful eponymously titled album with his band, The Glass Bureau in 1984...Quite remarkable considering the fact that like himself, the musicians in the band were lacking any recognisable ability.. They were, in short... fucking awful.
Following the inevitable and  much celebrated demise of the band, Chris Patterson went solo, bought a 4-track cassette machine and began his recordings... not content with his truly average bass playing he added truly average guitar playing and truly average keyboard playing to his repertoire.
The Shelf was born... 
They started at the bottom and worked their way down.
