Dan "Big Dan" Carlson was a great friend and loved by many.  Dan passed away in 2014, however he lives on through our memories.  Dan loved music, loved it.  Especially dance music.  Along with his extreme anal retentiveness and love of music, he has bestowed upon us an immaculate tape collection of 90's dance music.  I will continue to honor him by posting this tape collection digitally online for all to enjoy.  Dan would love this, we hope you do too.

Two of my favorite people in the world, and two of Dan's best friends, completely kill on this one.  damn.  Only one side of a tape, but it is straight breakbeat funk top to bottom with Dupont and Merlin on 4 decks.  If i had my dream party to organize, these guys would be on the bill alongside Sasha and Scott Henry, no shit.  Brad and Jason were also roommates with Dan and will have to give their story on this gem of a tape.  I've never heard it before, already listened to it twice.

The funky one himself, Phat Rabbit, from funk-da-ville, NC is a local legend and has been playing the local scene for 20+ years.  He's a fantastic DJ and even a nicer guy.  He's so fun to play with, always brings something interesting and fresh to his sets.

DJ Tee comin atcha...  a taste maker...  Arguably the godfather of the Greenville, NC scene, Tee Cardaci was DJing underground techno on his campus radio station long before many had even discovered this music.  Co-founder of FRESH, one of the longest running dance parties on the east coast, 8+ years strong, DJ Tee is one of the best promoters to come out of North Carolina.  The first FRESH was actually a birthday party for him that turned into a bi-weekly at Peasants Cafe.  A great all-around guy and friend of many, Tee now lives in Rio and travels the world DJing, doing what he loves to do and has been doing for the last 20+ years.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you ... Kris Krause. For me personally, Kris' DJ sets in 1994 changed my life. He was one of the first DJ’s in North Carolina playing this music in the early 1990’s. He and Jeff Nagel were an incredible duo. Jeff is also a great DJ and who Kris almost always shared the decks with. Kris played the first party I ever went to "Jenny's Jig II" in Jan 1994 at Kilroy's in Greensboro, NC. Kris’ set and music just totally blew me away. -(Dan’s tape collections contains a tape of Jenny’s Jig, which I’ll be posting soon) - I had been collecting "rave" CD's for years and made my first mix tape in 1991, but when I went to this underground party and heard real underground house/ techno, I was totally floored. It opened up a whole new world for me and even influenced what I did with the rest of my life, as I now work for a music technology company. This particular party was called "Warp" and was the first time I ate a can a beans (ya no what im sayin?) It was an incredible, life changing experience. Kris still plays and lives in Charlotte under the name Mr Atomic. Look him up. DJ Kraze and Kid Wicked.  (NOT the DJ Craze from Miami, but DJ Kraze from Tampa area.) These dudes are straight bananas with their creative mixes and were a big influence on me personally.  I gave this tape to Dan and turned my crew on to them.  These guys mix on SIX turntables and one can scratch really well, especially for 1996.  He's no Merlin, but he's damn good.  They are a mystery, I have never seen them on a flyer and have never heard of them past these two tapes I gave Dan.  Some might call the mixes busy, but int he best possible way, and when they nail a mixture of two songs both breaking at the same time, its bonkers.  Make sure you wait for the break.  Anyone who is a connoisseur of FL breaks and mixing in general will recognize these tracks and will be impressed by how they mix multiple layers of songs together to create crazy mix scenarios that i have never heard anyone attempt to this day.  ....and this is waaay before the "sync" button.

Dan's Tape collection continues to give us great music and memories.  This next tape/ set is my favorite tape that ive heard so far from the collection and one i spent the most time on.  its from my boy Brad Johnson aka Dupont.  Brad is one of my favorite DJ's of all time and not just saying that because he's one of my best friends.  He's a fantastic f*cking DJ.  His song selection, the way he builds his sets, his general taste in great music, is outstanding beat-mixing and blending is why is at the top of my list of favorite DJ's of all time.  This is an outstanding set from Brad, live at Axis in 1998.  Thanks again Dan, love you.  Merry Christmas. Enjoy.
