This track was intended for a film soundtrack reel I was putting together and never really finished. I had been working a lot at Studio G at the time on some actual film soundtrack work, so we tacked this on that budget.

I had just gotten a funky '57 LP Jr. at Matt Umanov's, and this was the song that came in it. Popped right out.

Flans and George Usher helped me with the lyrics here and there on this, and John also making significant changes to the arrangement and tempo at the session. At the time, I thought it got too fast, but now I really like it—the rhythm sections rocks it. I can hear a nod to the stuff Matthew Sweet was putting out at the time.

I was 32 when I recorded this, so the old-man-looking-back lyric is odd and a bit cringy in retrospect. But this is the band at its rocking best. 

From 1994 to mid 1996 I put together a power pop combo called Lazy Jaycees (name based on the cattle brand of my mother's Texas ranching family). After some early personnel changes (Chris Erikson was in the mix), it settled into the lineup for these recordings. Can't Shake Me was a recorded for a single release that never happened. All Behind Us part of a live to two-track demo session pre Robin joining us. The band folded slowly—I was terrible at getting gigs and loved our weekly rehearsal a lot more than the rest of the crew.

In 2012, I put out a collection of songs I'd been working on for a few years called Public Address The core band for this was Nancy Polstein on drums, Jeremy Chatzky on bass, and Cheri Leone on backing vocals. We recorded most of the basic tracks in Jeremy's barn in the Delaware Valley, including these two covers, which were left off the album. Joining the core quartet on these is keyboardist to the stars C.P. Roth and guitarist and artist in his own right, Chris Erikson. I'd first heard the Volebeat's The First Time Next Time on a 45 they sent to the "offices" of Diesel Only Records in the early 90s (the flip was Abba's Knowing Me, Knowing You). It's included on their fantastic '94 album Up North.
