The Japanese term Shugyo refers to developing and honing a practitioner’s character through hard physical and mental training. The band began in the Spring of 2015 with bassist Jason Heeter, guitarist Matt Gates, and drummer JJ Seabaugh. The 3 were the only remaining members of the Cape Girardeau based funk band Monstars, and decided a new name and new direction was needed. That direction is Shugyo. Combining myriad styles and influences from the world of jazz to the symphony halls, Shugyo push the boundaries of style to create a blend truly their own.
