Christian Reim (b. 1945) has played jazz since the late 50’s, his merits list is long but how many can price themselves with having played both bass and piano with Dexter Gordon? That was back in the day but with this new release, different generations meet. 

The first four songs were recorded in the autumn of 2001 in two sets, one with Harald Johnsen (b.1970 - d.2011) on bass and Jarle Vespestad (b. 1966) on drums. Two years later, in the summer of 2003, it is Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (b. 1971) on bass and Håkon Mjåset Johansen (b. 1975) on drums. The recordings were made in Christian’s home studio at Frogner in Oslo with Martin Abrahamsen as the sound engineer.

The repertoire consists of Reim’s own songs, but also the famous jazz version of Norways national anthem ‘Ja, Vi Elsker’ The traditional christmas song “O Jul med din Glede” and an interpretation of Ennio Morricone’s ‘Once Upon A Time In America’

For his third full-length release, Matt Emonson AKA Mat/Matix has remixed and mastered a tape of his 2013-2016 creations dubbed ‘850,’ an ode to his 1997 Volvo station wagon. Moved by Larry Heard’s Sceneries Not Songs Vol. 1-2, Emonson has painted his own aural landscape including batches of uptempo synth funk, street soul, g-funk, and jazzy house. Toiled over for many years, this instrumental album is the sound of a young producer discovering their unique darkened west-coast sound. In ’Mountain Mist,’ a wall of drum breaks and synths give way to a soulful guitar solo. ‘Loons’ takes a swing groove through dusty layers of classic 12 bit samples. ‘Robertson’s Jam’ is a dance floor workout of digital synth textures reminiscent of a midnight drive through the city. 850 is a nostalgic 40-minute journey to bump in the car, feel on a pair of headphones, or jam at a house party. Growing up in a small town a few hours from California’s East Bay area, Space Ghost (Sudi Wachspress) moved to Oakland ten years ago to study at the California College of the Arts. In a city known for its vibrant cultural fabric and its experimental music scene, Space Ghost represents a new generation of young artists. His DJ collective Late Feelings, launched in 2013, has allowed him to find his own groove amongst monthly all-vinyl dance parties, where he plucks influences from various corners of the world.
