Mix of the Week: Hotthobo - Night Cream

“Small combo beat laden jazz experimentations, drawing influences across the rare groove spectre in this unique funky mashup!”

Recorded during the summer of 2022 at Jazzaggression’s Pelto Studio in Siuntio, Finland, this is the second album in our New Library Series. The album features a talented trio of Finnish musicians, including Aleksi Heinola on drums, Temu Åkerblom on bass, and Markus Holkko on reeds and flute.

While the group consists of only three musicians, they have used overdubs and effects to create a broad and dynamic sound. The music is heavily influenced by jazz but incorporates elements from a variety of styles in the rare groove idiom.

Our New Library Series celebrates the legacy of library music with newly recorded material from musicians of all ages. This album is a prime example of the genre-bending, creative, and experimental setting that defines the series.

For his third full-length release, Matt Emonson AKA Mat/Matix has remixed and mastered a tape of his 2013-2016 creations dubbed ‘850,’ an ode to his 1997 Volvo station wagon. Moved by Larry Heard’s Sceneries Not Songs Vol. 1-2, Emonson has painted his own aural landscape including batches of uptempo synth funk, street soul, g-funk, and jazzy house. Toiled over for many years, this instrumental album is the sound of a young producer discovering their unique darkened west-coast sound. In ’Mountain Mist,’ a wall of drum breaks and synths give way to a soulful guitar solo. ‘Loons’ takes a swing groove through dusty layers of classic 12 bit samples. ‘Robertson’s Jam’ is a dance floor workout of digital synth textures reminiscent of a midnight drive through the city. 850 is a nostalgic 40-minute journey to bump in the car, feel on a pair of headphones, or jam at a house party. Choose your own path.

Growing up in a small town a few hours from California’s East Bay area, Space Ghost (Sudi Wachspress) moved to Oakland ten years ago to study at the California College of the Arts. In a city known for its vibrant cultural fabric and its experimental music scene, Space Ghost represents a new generation of young artists. His DJ collective Late Feelings, launched in 2013, has allowed him to find his own groove amongst monthly all-vinyl dance parties, where he plucks influences from various corners of the world.
