The next installment on Soulfooled sees David Durango deliver a masterfully crafted five track EP entitled Calimbo. With a passion and dedication to electronic music that began in the early nine- ties, David Durango’s career has grown and flourished year by year, with a catalogue of releases on the likes of Poker Flat, VIVa music and of course his ‘Supermarket’ EP on Soulfooled.

The opening track ‘Calimbo’ truly captures Durango’s versatility as a producer. Melodic chimes accompany an intricately constructed drum rhythm that progressively drives this production forward before gradually echoing out. ‘Christi & Santi’ offers a darker, more atmospheric track to the EP with distinctive synth keys ringing elegantly throughout the ears of the listener.

Track after track David Durango’s extensive musical knowledge shines through his productions by captivating listeners with a variety of sounds. ‘Shame Wall’ and ‘Nazaria’ present crisp hi-hats and uplifting percussive rhythms that highlight Durango’s skill to capture a wide variety of sounds yet still staying true to the minimal tech-house sound that he has grown so accustomed to.

To round off the year, Resoul will be live on the decks once again. For all you music lovers, there are about 50 favourite songs that meant a lot to me and some that are new to my playlist. Maybe sometimes a bit of a wild mix of styles but that's part of me. I finally found the time to go through my record collection. I found a lot of stuff I bought in the 90s, which brought back many great memories. Exciting genres such as trip hop and drum & bass emerged, hip hop exploded, and house conquered the dance floors. Time for a new mix for your listening pleasure. For 30 years, the six-member DJ and production collective, Jazzanova, has been highly influential, artfully bridging the worlds of jazz, soul, and world into a fusion of modern sounds that have delighted ears and feet through the years. 

My first introduction was listening to “Coffee Talk,” a downtempo tune whose debut on Los Angeles radio station KCRW was the start of a music trajectory that would see the group through many top-notch remixes, several studio albums, a number of special music projects, and, now, coming full circle with a live version of its 2001 debut, “In Between.” “In Between Revisited” finds Jazzanova in a live session, with an intimate audience, surfacing ack to the tunes from its 2001 album, but giving it an updated flair. 

To celebrate “IN Between Revisited,” I did an early July all-vinyl set at Jan’s Vinyl Bar in San Luis Obispo, where the owners are fans too and where I spin about 1-2 times monthly. It was an honor to do so, and so great to pull out vinyl from my radio show days, when the music was fresh. It stands up very well today.

With that, I hope you enjoy the mix that I have for you: two hours of Jazzanova, along with friends, from vocalists to producers remixing Jazzanova. There was only so much that two hours could fit in, but here it is.
