Only You Can Tell

We first introduced these strapping young house aficionados from Sligo, Ireland, with their debut EP as a pair, “Street Urchin”, a little over a year ago. Since then the guys have been busy with a massive release on Detroit Swindle’s label Heist, not to mention their unbridled musical passion lead them to launch their own label Splendor & Squalor beginning of this year, kicking things off with a sell out vinyl only pressing of another four track EP of their own imaginings featuring a hot remix from Session Victim. 

We’re pleased to share with you their latest creation, the stunning “Lamaj’s Secret EP”. Now, we’re not sure who Lamaj is exactly, but the mystery, funk and raw sex appeal in these four jams certainly has us wondering. 

First up we meet “Lamaj”, this track drips with delicate melodic samples, jazz tainted drums and bass driven funk galore. We asked our long time friend, Australian Andy Hart, to give it a flip for us on A2. He opened things up, deepened the vibe and brought some bass toms to deliver a final punch. The B-side begins with “Four Lights”, here the guys slow things down a little and remind us of their gift for nostalgia touched soul and groove samples. Finally, “Garlic Fist Pump”, as the name suggests, takes us straight back out to the dance floor, between the dynamic live drums, subtle vocal snips cry to the hip hop Brame & Hamo draw so much inspiration from. Welcome to the House of Lamaj, we hope you’ll take off your coat and stay a while.

Frits Wentink has repeatedly showcased his desire to go against the grain through the left-field electronic music explored in his full-length Rarely Pure, Never Simple album and an almighty eleven EPs. Frits now returns to Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings – after a two-year hiatus from the label as well as last year's launch of his own imprint, Bobby Donny – with his twelfth single and Heist's fourteenth catalogue number, Rising Sun, Falling Coconut.

On this new venture, Frits brings four totally original and moreish takes on electronic music as we know it. The title track lies in penultimate place on the release takes top place for us. Pitch-bent laziness and purple tinged synth countermelodies sets the laid back tone, with the skippety hi-hat occasionally making timely appearances every so often to keep the loose-natured track chugging along nicely. Another signature, dusty groove from the name that's also behind techno outpost, Will & Ink. As the label put it themselves – the release is basically a case of "classic Heist, classic Frits."

Keep an eye out for Rising Sun, Falling Coconut dropping on vinyl and digitally on 25th January, as well as news of Fritz' project with some legendary and likeminded producers in the pipeline. All coming soon.

After the success of the fine album, Triphoria, released on Monkey Safari's imprint Hommage, Kotelett & Zadak have invited a great selection of stars to remix it.

Triphoria made for a great musical journey from start to finish. It covered plenty of ground and offered lots of diverse sounds so is ripe for remixing. It was the latest in a long line of success for this talented pair, who have been working together since 2008 on labels like Hi Freaks, Acker Records, Katermukke and many more.

Selected to remix are the likes of Monkey Safari, who tackle Let It Happen with a deep sense of soul and emotion. Then Martin Waslewski turns the title track into a spine tingling cut that takes you to another level. And & And gets re-rubbed by Viktor Talking Machine and comes out as an absorbing, slick house cut for cosy and intimate dance floors.

Filburts O*RS Boogie mix of Everything I Do is playful and colourful, soul drenched and romantic, Prismic makes Triphoria a dark and slow burning beauty and Soukie & Windish go for a spaced out and melodically rich take on Bodies In The Night. Finally, Orkit flips Light into a classy deep house number with spiritual chords, bumpy drums and free flowing vibes.

This is a brilliant package that breathes lots of new life into the still excellent originals.

Release Info: 
Introducing Felix Leifur, Dirt Crew’s latest discovery, an all new, raw and savvy talent from Reykjavík, Iceland. Reykjavík has a population of just over 120,000, so the disco, hip hop and soul sampling, house music community that Felix rolls with is pretty tight knit, giving him a unique and inspired perspective on the sound. Remixing is friend of the label, Manchester’s Hidden Spheres. After breaking through on our ‘Deep Love 10’ compilation, he went on to drop his ‘Waiting’ EP last summer on ‘Distant Hawaii’ (the dreamy offshoot of ‘Lobster Theremin’).

On the A, ‘Berg Toppur’, is a dance floor workout, a sublime balance of shimmering rhodes and vibrant arps with slamming organic percussion. ‘Giving’ is a spirited and warbling cut, crooning vocals and gritty horn blasts punctuate it’s steady groove and loose live clap. This one’s got open air written all over it.

On the B-side, ‘The Sunday Club’ is a eclectic and somewhat eccentric jam, samples from across decades, weave together to create something altogether new. Next up, Hidden Spheres’ “Rocky Top” remix of ‘Berg Toppur’ eases in with a casual vibe, steamy drums, and a no-nonsense bass line set the pace, while the arps and elated vocals from the original sweep and soar, building to a feverish peak of sun-scorched bliss. Finally, ’Wait’ sets the mood with a dusty jazz piano refrain and a strutting groove, before bringing the playful yet punchy trip home with a solid head-nodding bass line.

Felix Leifur’s diverse ear and distinct style gives ‘The Sunday Club’ EP the perfect blend of breezy summertime spirit and serious night club heat.

As to be honest the dancing-round-your-eardrums flutes and disco stabs really make one feel as I imagine the Sun from Teletubbies felt back in the day, bliss.

This is the fourth and final track from my new album Notes On Belonging coming out on 27th October 2017! This track is the place where I find space and meaning in the form of repetition of three notes. It explores the notion of belonging to a place, physically and spiritually, and a sense of journeying to a place called home. It's both tinged with joy and a sense of longing, of nearly being there but not quite yet. The track explores a sort of counterpoint, where instruments go in and out of phase to emphasise this nearness of things. They delicately tow the line of independent improvisation to colliding in pattern, most noticeable at the end of the track. I wanted to explore themes of indiviuality and freedom in the piece with the hope that inevitably we'd join forces at times.
