現在でも人気とWantの絶えぬGrap Luva(I.N.I.)をFeatした2004年の<Beyond Real>からの名作『Take A Look』から12年…。DJ Spinnaが、Basement Khemistでもお馴染みの盟友Joc Maxと共に送るスペシャル・プロジェクト＝Domecrackersによる待望と呼ぶに相応しい6TRK EPが<Jazzy Sport>からリリース！
　
　昨年リリースされた『Compositions4』で、その揺るぎないヒップホップ・プロダクションのオリジナリティーと進（深）化を魅せつけたDJ SpinnaとJoc Maxが織り成すヒップホップ／ソウルの世界が余す事無く詰め込まれた作品になっている。
　 
　一聴してSpinnaのものと体感できるバウンシーなビートと鮮やかなキーボードワークが光るビート・インスト「Domecrackers Intro」から幕開ける本作。
　続く「A2」では、D'Angeloの最新アルバム『Black Messiah』でもその大きな影響が話題になったSly & The Family Stoneの71年の傑作『There's A Riot Goes On』収録のハートウォームなソウル／ファンクの名曲「Running Away」をカヴァー。Reggie Bによるヴォーカル、Miles Bonnyによるトランペットを交えた原曲への敬意を感じさせる生演奏のアプローチと、Joc Maxによるドライブ感のあるビート、Spinnaならではの高揚感に溢れるソウル・エレクトリックなアレンジが融合し、素晴しいカヴァーに仕上がっている。　
　タイトに跳ねたビートに、ジャジーなピアノ・リフレイン、グルーヴィーなキーボード／シンセ、Reggie Bによる淡く伸びやかなソウル・ヴォーカルがFeatされ、メロー・エッセンシャルな80'sソウル的なヴァイブに溢れた世界を繰り広げる「Out Of This World」も、このEPのハイライトと呼ぶに相応しい名曲。
　B-Sideは、Joc Maxによるドラム、ベース、ギター・リフの織り成す漆黒のビート／グルーヴ、ブラックポエット的なフロウがリズミカルに呼応するヒップホップ「Go On」からスタート。
　ピアノのリフレインを軸にした90'sフレイバーを感じさせるタイトなビート／グルーヴに、Reggie BとJoc Maxxが黒く鮮やかなヒップホップ・ソウルの世界が繰り広げる「Martian Man」は、後半からのムーグ系キーボードのソロもヤバい仕上がり。
  そして密室型のエレクトリック・ファンク的なトリップ感に溢れるDJ Spinnaによるビート・インスト「Outro」で幕を閉じる。

Stop what you’re doing. Lovers of soul, funk, and all the other good grease need to get on this 45 real quick. HopeStreet Recordings brings you a collaboration between Australia’s hottest soul voice, Nai Palm, and Australia’s heaviest rhythm section, The PutBacks, on that classic, classic joint Spanish Harlem. The Worm, a typically heavy PutBacks instrumental on the flip rounds out two smokin’ sides of Burn City soul.  

Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector wrote Spanish Harlem for Ben E King in 1960, but it was Aretha Franklin took it to number one in 1970. In 2013, The PutBacks and Nai put it down one more time on 8 tracks of tape with the production team at HopeStreet Recordings and you sure can take that sucker home on wax, but you’d better be quick. After all – this release has been 50 years in the making. 

The B side on this record is for the B boys. The Worm baby. Lots of songs fade out, but how many fade in? Yeah. That’s real. This kind of lowdown funky break is what the PutBacks really love to put the back in. Ouch. Will someone sample this already so it can go for longer than three and a half minutes?

This record is raucous and rich in the rawness. The drums, bass, and percussion gallop through Spanish Harlem and swagger through The Worm. The guitar and organ howl and huff. Simple production lets the musicians do the talking, and boy, Nai Palm can shout. Sweet layered harmonies over a dirty minimal rhythm track. It’s a new thing, it’s an old thing, it’s a limited pressing and it’s yours at www.hopestreetrecordings.com.

There are two definitions to this EP, the first being literally being “for our time”. In the current era of musicians, like myself from London, people tend crave and look to the states for answers and are quick to criticise the music from our own home. Some may disagree – but I speak from experience. This EP is the project that demonstrates there is hope where we’re from and where I’ve come from and we should unite in that. We all have a story to tell. This project is about Truth, Love and Passion.

Before:

The second meaning of this project is its nostalgic presence. This being a story telling project, it is filled with reflecting on situations and life experiences. The whole theme sonically is driven by reminiscence; I wanted to bring the same feeling or something close to the feeling, you felt when Hip Hop was at its peak of greatness and what is said actually meant something. I was born in 1993, and with this project I wanted to give people that same feeling of when music and Hip Hop was appreciated and respected by the masses in the 90's, and bring that feeling back to my home city and the world.
